Chapter 2

She was standing at her window, staring down at the porch. She felt weak, even standing on her two feet was proving immensely difficult. Grasping the windowsill and gathering up all her energy, she stood there at the window. Her eyesight was getting blurry due to the water which kept forming in them but she blinked and rubbed them away, not daring to blink for a moment. Because if she did, she would lose everything.

Her family was all present there but her eyes were for him only. He was smiling and taking the elder's blessings. The time was coming near, he was going to leave.

She felt herself move back. First a little slow, then she turned around and left the room. Her fast steps turned into a run and she ran through the long corridor of the palace, her dupatta trailing sliding on the floor behind her. She was feeling so weak a few moments ago and now she was running. She couldn't see clearly where she was going but she didn't collide into anything. It's like her feet knew where to take her, as if they were being guided by a superior power.

She moved through the corridor, took a turn, climbed a few steps and reached at the open end of the palace from where the whole front area of the palace was visible; from the porch to the gates all the way to the road which connected the palace to the city. But it was a dangerous place as it was open with no security. No one was allowed to go there. Yet, she was there. She had found all the doors open and no one had come in her way to stop her.

She kept running and stopped only when she reached the end of the place. Gripping the pillar for support, she took deep breathes and looked down at the porch. He was moving towards the car without turning back. The strength in her body was threatening to leave her but she stood her ground, not moving her gaze from his face for a single second.

A wave of wind touched her face, making her open hair fly. The wind when touched her sweaty face, it sent down a shiver down her spine. But she stood her ground.

He had opened the door of his car when the wind had hit her. The wind had also caressed his face making him stop in his track for a while. It was proving hard for her to breathe. But she stood her ground.

Confused, he turned around and his eyes traveled to the place where she was standing. It was an unusual place for a person who was leaving to look. But he had looked there. The pain in her body was increasing. But she stood her ground.

There eyes met. Her eyes were misty, his eyes were empty. He had seen her looking at him. He had seen her standing at a dangerous place when she should be in her bed as the doctor had instructed her to be. She bit her lip to keep the cry of anguish inside her. He saw her do it. But she stood her ground.

It all happened in 5 seconds. He looked at her, she looked at him. She waited for him to give a reaction. He only looked at her, emotionless, and turned away. She felt something break in her chest. He sat in the car. But she stood her ground.

The world was spinning but she was standing. The gates of the palace opened and the car started. Her knees were shaking and the car moved towards the gate. Her eyesight was getting blurry and the car sped out of the palace. Her misty eyes followed the car. The car disappeared and she no longer stood her ground.

3 years later...

"Manyata bhai!!!" Vijay Bhai shouted in her ear and she jumped, making the book in her hand fly away from her.

"Kya hai Vijay Bhai?! Kyun mujhe heart-attack de rahe hain?!" Irritated, she looked at him and got up to pick up the book.

"Oho! Isse choro aur hamari baat suno!" He took the book from her hand and slammed it on the table. She was surprised at his behavior.

"Aisa kya toofan agaya hai jo aap aisa act kar rahe ho?" She raised her eyebrow at him. In return he gave her a look as if she was mad.

"Ye main kya sun raha hun?" He asked her seriously and she chuckled.

"Mujhe kya pata?" She took the book from the table and moved past him to put it in its respective place on the shelf.

"Yehi ke tum London ja rahi ho?" His voice made her sigh. She turned her face around while putting the book.

"Ye baat hai? Main tou samjhi pata nahin kya hogaya hai?"

"Ye choti baat nahin hai! Mami Saab bata rahi thi ke tum akeli ja rahi ho?"

"Of course, main choti bachi nahin hun. Dadi Saab ko itna lamba travel allow nahin hai aur Daata ka Devgarh mein hona zaroori hai." After putting the book on its place, she moved to the table and picked up a file and started going through it. Vijay came near her and took the file from her hand.

"Tumhara jana zaroori hai kya?" He asked her softly, concern dripping from her face. She felt a rush of affection for her brother and held his hand.

"Haan Vijay Bhai."

"Per kyun?"

"Aise hi..."

"Aise hi matlab?"

Manyata looked at him and sighed. She knew he was concerned for her and he had every right to be. He did call her 'bhai' but he treated her like a little sister. Specially after her nervous breakdown.

"Vijay Bhai, mujhe pata hai ke apko meri fikar hai lekin main theek hun. Main tab hi theek hogayi thi. Sare doctors kehte hain ke I am physically perfect!" She smiled broadly at him but he continued looking serious.

"Just physically. Mentally tou..." He left his sentence in mid-air and her smile vanished.

"Mujhe kuch nahin hua, na physically na mentally. Main parso ja rahi hun, agar ap chahte hain ke main ache mood mein jaoun tou don't question my decisions again." She said curtly and let go of his hand. She turned around and started walking.

"Does he know?" He asked just when she was at the door to leave.

"I don't know and I don't care." She replied after a pause and marched out. Vijay looked at the spot where she had disappeared and smiled sadly.

"Tum kitna bhi badal jao Manyata Bhai...mujhse jhoot kabhi nahin bol paogi."

He looked at the large picture hanging on the wall for a few seconds before shrugging and walking 0ut of the room.

The Manyata in the picture wasn't different from the one which had just left the room. Her long hair were open and touching her waist gently. She was dressed in a full sleeved anarkali dress with no jewellery except from a silver chain which hung around a neck and disappeared behind her dress. Her postured was straight and control. The expression on her face was confident and authoritative. Nothing was different. Neither the physical look nor the blank emptiness of her eyes.
