When I posted this topic I was a bit skeptical. I doubted it would become a controversial one. But thanks to mature and well learned members of this forum I got to read some admirable views.
I would also like to welcome Armana and Garf to DMđ. Please do post more often.
My views on the questions posed by me are more or less the same as Souro and Armana's.
1. Should religious conversions be banned in India?
As others before me mentioned India is a secular country and banning is not a solution. An adult should have the right to willingly adopt another religion
2. What is a forced conversion?
I like Souro's opinion on this question. There are two kinds. One is harassing and one is brainwashing. The first kind rarely exists these days. It was more common in olden times when rulers used to force common man tot adopt the religion they profess. I have seen on CBN many of the missionaries working in poor areas and offering them basic amenities in turn asking them to convert to Christianity.
3. Is providing money and TV sets and basic needs and influencing people to convert a forced conversion?
Again I will go with Souro.
4. Orphanages run by missionaries convert every inmate to Christianity. Is it right?
It is fine as long as the children don't have an idea of their religion. But if the inmate belongs to another religion or wants to practice some other religion then he should be given a choice. The mother superior at Mother Teresa's charity missionary is Nirmala Joshi but she practices Christianity because that is the only way to work for these missionaries which in my opinion is a hidden agenda to make people of developing countries embrace Christianity.
5. Govt. is planning to make religious reference compulsory in class 10th because some are converting to get job through reservation while applying to professional courses. What is your take on it?
First government should make amends in it's reservation policy all other things will fall right into the place.
Cordelia, Welcome to DM.
Garf & Aramana, Feel free to post your views on other topics as well. This is a fun forumđ. All of us are like family, a dysfunctional oneđ.
1.Should religious conversions be banned in India?
NO! We lived in a democratic, secular country. Everyone has the right to convert to whatever they want to. As long as you believe in it, you have every right to convert to whatever religion they want to.
2. What is a forced conversion?
I guess forced conversion would be when you are converted but you don't agree with the beliefs of a certain religion.
3. Is providing money and TV sets and basic needs and influencing people to convert a forced conversion?
Not really! They go on the tv with an agenda to make people aware of their certain religions. NO one is forcing anyone to convert. for ex: if they show murder on a movie, you can't blame the tv for forcing you to act in the same manner.
4. Orphanages run by missionaries convert every inmate to Christianity. Is it right?
Well that is a very debatable point. On one hand, conversion makes sense b/c then the orphanages pray together and they become closer. So, it is good for them as a group. ON the other hand, a child is practically being forced to convert in return for food and shelter. I don't know if it is the right thing to do. Good deeds shouldn't be done based on relgious beliefs. And the children are not given enough information about other religions so that they can make a choice of their own.
5. Govt. is planning to make religious reference compulsory in class 10th because some are converting to get job through reservation while applying to professional courses. What is your take on it?
I thought we were a secular country. So, why does religion matter so much.
