I came across this to reply to Vinu ji and the 16,000 women of Krishna.

Good question..
According to our hindu mythology, God has created 10 avatars (Dasavataram) where each avatar explain us unique meaning. So that, human beings can follow that and make their lives in more meaningful and spiritual way..
For example, if you ask any girl what kind of guy you want to marry, she undoubtely will tell that I want a person like Rama as my life partner...Y?
As Ayodya Rama is the person proved himself as a great son, great husband, great ruler/king, great kind hearted person, Great brother.
He has fulfilled all his responsibilities in such a way that we still worship him and showed how a Man should live his life.....
At the same time, Lord Krishna also proved how a person loves other with their full heart. He didn't himself married 16,000 gopikas. Infact, gopika's like Krishna very much and they pleased Krishna to be their husband once. They all admire Kirshna in such a way that they just only know one thing that is love. Radha is the aunt of Krishna but still they love each other....
In this avatar, he showed how to love a person with heart....
But you may thinking physically he married 16,000 gopikas.....thats untrue....He blessed all his gopikas with his love......
For example, take father in a family.....He loved by all the family. Though he acts as a son, brother, husband, father, cousin, friend roles in his life but the heartful love which he showers on the people will be same...........
Ok.....

But the real story seems to be this:
The second day of the Diwali festival, is the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin, and is called Narak-Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas and also known as Chhoti (-small) Diwali. This day is dedicated to the victory of Lord Krishna over the wicked demon king Narakasur.

Lord Vishnu and Sudarshana Chakra (from Wikimedia)
Narkasur had fought against neighbouring kings and imprisoned 16,000 women, daughters of the Gods and saints. He had also defeated Lord Indra and taken away the magnificient kundale (earrings) from the ears of Aditi, mother of the Gods. When Lord Krishna learnt about Narakasur's deeds, he decided to engage him in battle and liberate all the celestials. On hearing of this proposed battle Satyabhama, Lord Krishna's wife, took this task upon herself and with his help killed Narkasur with Krishna's sudarshana chakra (originally given to him by Lord Vishnu). As a symbol of the victory Lord Krishna smeared his own forehead with the demon's blood. On his return, the womenfolk massaged his body with scented oils and gave him a good bath to wash away the filth.
