After Shivaji Maharaj ,the Maratha empire also did not see very good days .The capital was shifted from Pune to Satara by the King who was now Shahu Maharaj. He appointed Balaji vishwanat bhat as his prime minister who looked after the kingdom.Balaji was a Brahmin. He belonged to the Brahmins from konkan's coastal belt. Now some say these Brahmins are descendants of "Aryans" that is the Greeks who came to India. So they are very fair and have colored eyes.
Balaji got the title " Peshwa " from shahu Maharaj .
When he died, his 14 year old son "Bajirao" became Peshwa.
Bajirao though a Brahmin who were known only for educational and religious activities those days, was a great warrior.History says he fought 41 battles and remain undefeated. So he is also called as "unbeaten warrior".He brought glory to Marathas. The Peshwas were very wealthy.
Bajirao built the famous " shanivaarwada" monument in Pune.Ots a huge fort like structure and his family started residing there.Again the capital was shifted to Pune by Bajirao but the King shahu Maharaj stayed in Satara only.Bajirao was married to kashibai and had two sons.
Raja chatrasal was King of bundlekhand and he was known to fought many battles against Mughals,He was very close to Marathas. He was a Rajput .Mastani was his daughter from his Persian Muslim wife.Again here there are many stories like she was courtesan in his kingdom but the reality was she was daughter of Chatrasal. She was trained in dance, music but she was trained in sword fighting horse riding and spear throwing.
When Mughals attacked chatrasal at that time Bajirao was campaigning in the vicinity of bundlekhand.Chatrasal sought his help.Bajirao defeated the Mughals and chatrasal was so happy that he declared Bajirao as his son.He married Mastani to Bajirao .Some say that she was so beautiful that to protect her from Mughals ,he married her off to Bajirao. He even gave one third of his kingdom including sagar ,kalpi ,jhansi to Bajirao with 33 lakh gold coins and a diamond mine.
But the orthodox Brahmins of Pune never accepted Mastani as his wife .Specially bajirao's mother Radhabai and his younger brother chimaji. They took her as his concubine only though she was his wedded wife.So briefly living at shanivaarwada ,he built a beautiful palace for Mastani.
Mastani bore him a son krishna rao.But nobody was ready to do his threading ceremony and accept him as a Brahmin.
Mastani always accompanied Bajirao in all his campaigns. She was his inspiration. When Bajirao died at age of 41 due to sunstroke while campaigning near Indore ,Mastani flung herself in his pyre and died as sati,
And the most important part ,her son was brought up then later on by Bajirao's first wife kashibai as her own son.So kashibai was no Ruku here.
