Finally watched,
I agree that the non - diety parts will seem repetitive to south audience, village setting, the hero's portryal, mother, friends etc from asuran, rangasthalam (twist is same) to pushpa lots of films with similar settings
but he rooted it very well in the local setting, the cast, locations, everything depicted was very natural and well done
but the highlights were the daiva part, it was excellent, his acting, direction (very tough to carry off) is really praiseworthy
this part was very well done and though there are fims like ammoru etc this was incorporated very creatively in the forest and modern setting
yes, especially for the south audience more exploration of the daiva part would have appealed, i think hindi audience dont have such films (pushpa worked because of this) in mainstream it looks very refreshing to them. cant imagine any mainstream hindi actor being able to carry this role off
but movie was well made, cast, locations, techical values, solid story, screenplay, music everything came together which itself is very rare nowadays
definetly worth watching
I sensed resemblance with Rangasthalam too, be it the caste angle, the zamindar/king angle, or the brother bit. Precisely the reason why I would have liked more focus on the Daiva part because I was left waiting for that throughout the movie, only to have gotten it at the very end. Though I have to agree that that portion was brilliantly acted and directed, no doubt about it.
Also, one thing which I particularly liked in the movie was that of the Forest official, it was such a beautiful arc to not make him an out and out villain and that slight realization by Shiva that Murali's intentions weren't evil.
India has so many such powerful beliefs and stories in every culture that it is always nice to see them portrayed on the big screen, the last time I loved a movie on those lines was Jogwa. It was absolutely amazing and Upendra Limaye hit it out of the park. Marathi films also have a fine way of tapping into very rooted stories.
i donrt knw for what reason this delusions of neha user has given a laughing reaction to my comment,..
i think that person has never visited village or their rooted place where they belong,.. may be laughter of ignorance
I laughed at the question of invoking a God being called a superstition. I actually found it ridiculous that people don't understand the traditions, spirituality and divinity and call it "superstition".Originally posted by: Rocky.Bhai

Also, I've lived in a village and I'm very connected to my roots.

agree
i liked his character too, it is like you expect him to be evil but he is exactly what a well educated official might be, cynical skeptical and rash, kishore acted well
jogwa was great, marathi has lots of great movies, i think being in bombay around bw has hurt its visibility, otherwise it would have been hailed like mal cinema
even tummbad was great because it was rooted in marathi lit and culture
yes, so many aspects can be explored, and this where bw is failing, it is not the style of filmaking (big, small, stylized, natural) but rootedness to any of the cultures which it lacks because it is not connected to any regions roots

Regional films will have that edge, the stories can imbibe the culture, language and traditon of a particular region which strongly binds the people belonging to it. Though each and every state itself has varied cultures right from food to dialect but still the sense of belonging is pretty strong.
For bollywood that roots is mostly city specific be it a big city or a small city and now it feels like even that has almost run its course. Filmmakers with that USP are too enamoured by big stars with stories taking a back seat (ex Anand rai). I believe that Bollywood also needs to set its stories in newer places, it is not utilising even the northern belt well enough, mostly stereotyping. Otherwise the scope is endless.
Tumbbad is a different beast of a movie. It is easily one of the best Hindi movies ever made. Mind-blowing in so many aspects.
