IDK if Aamir and co researched events or added them for heck of it as markers of the era Lal lived through.
Or if they did try to show well researched stuff but their film was heavily censored...or they edited it themselves to avoid controversies.
For eg, they totally omitted incidents like 2008 Kandhamal riots, Graham Staines murder, 2002 Gujarat pogrom and KP exodus, Chatisinghpora massacre. Despite having Christian character in the film they could have shown some reference to anti Christian riots too but they did not.
The film seems to end in 2018 so it skipped lynching incidents also. It kept playing as safe as possible.
The film is indeed sad in post pandemic times with Lal losing all 3 people who loved him most in life and were only ones who warmed up to him. And also losing his friend who moved away.
I think Indian filmmakers seem to believe that showing Indo Pak unity or reforming or melting heart of terrorist is the biggest thing they can show in name of power of love and kindness or show how Indians have bigger hearts and their love and kindness can change Pak based militants too. They better realise that this trope no longer works nor is it convincing.
I do not think Aamir's personal life affects his films. His first divorce or public spat with his dad and brother or fights with rivals or Amole Gupte, political spats, banning media and awards or his love child did not affect his films like Fanaa, RDB, TZP, Ghajini from becoming hits. He openly fought with Chetan Bhagat over credit issue but it did not affect 3 Idiots. Even his intolerance statement or public bashing of BJP, Modi did not affect Dangal, PK, Dhoom 3 or earlier Fanaa and RDB.
This time he indeed failed in story telling, marketing, screenplay, time of release, promotion, choice of subject, lack of justification for many scenes, no understanding of rural context or showing events superficially, too many loose ends, no one knows why he was running for so long and no one stopped him or where he remained all those years. LSC is not the kind of film one will watch in theatre. And if you are already grieving or recovering from loss this film makes you sadder as it made me sadder and I did not recommend it to other relatives who are recently bereaved or suffered loss. Not a relief giving watch or distraction in post pandemic times. It can help you grieve more though if you want and convince you, that you have nothing in your own hands and are puppet at hands of fate and time.
Chal kaleya song resonated a lot with me.
