I am sure the Khans would love to move on to the next phase of their career, but they are simply unable to because there are no successors for them.
None of the new gen has been able to fill the giant shoes these 3 have walked in. Hrithik managed it somewhat, but he just doesnt make enough movies.
Ranbir, Ranveer, Shahid all started off promising and then just couldnt capitalize on the initial love they got from the audience.
So then, who is going to headline the big budget movies? The old, but undefeated crew are asked to carry on this responsibility and they continue to do so in the hope that somewhere, some miracle will happen and a story/script will click with the audience leading to a comeback
I agree with most of what you wrote. There are no worthy successors for the Khans and they're stuck in a rut. But I refuse to believe that they are aching to pass on the torch. Most ageing film stars refuse to exit the stage gracefully and have to be forcibly ejected by a rising new generation. They will extend their shelflife by acting with a younger hero. Like Amitabh,Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra and Raj Babber had to cede their places to Anil Kapoor,Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff.
Look at Rajnikant, Mammotty, Mohanlal who still dominate their respective industries who still romance heroines much younger than them. Unless they die out (I really don't wish them ill) or are forcibly removed to the sidelines by public demand for youngsters they will still play heroes in their 70s. Few people will let go of power and glory willingly. It's just not in human nature. Few people remember that Mammotty and Mohanl's meteoric rise to fame in the 80s was aided by the unexpected death of Jayan in an accident. Just having talent is not enough. There should be a vacuum.
