There is not a single factor. It is accumulation of many factors.

(A) Boring but expensive movies, which are also not original. Indian audience in pandemic showed they are enjoying mostly Desi culture or Indian culture, rather than lapping the Americanised Kardashian culture that BW patronises. And also the expensive part. You need to cut your budget, make big actors take lower fees and profit sharing rather than take huge fees upfront and cripple the budget of the movie(looking at your Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and so on).

(B) Bollywood needs new charismatic stars. Old stars no longer have the same charm as above. All of thier fan base have become old and don't have money to waste. The new generation's do not follow bollywood star but social media influencers, who are the biggest star of today's generation Z.

(C) Sushant's death and it's negative impact on Bollywood's image, exposing the nepotism and especially the lobbying culture. People have genuinely started hating BW, and BW instead of admitting it's lobbying culture, became defensive which made people angry even more.

(D) South Indian movies especially Telugu and Tamil movies popularity and BW being stupid enough to remake them, when they are freely available on television and online, especially YouTube These movies which is mostly representing the Indian desi culture make people more related to them. And I am not talking about big budget blockbusters, but small or mid budget South Indian movies which are available for free. If you remake them, you are lookin at loss.

(E) Lack of good music. Just listen to Ek Villain One music and sequal music. If a movie doesn't have good music, and filled with remake crap, it will suffer. You cannot have SKTKS remake music work everytime. People need original music.

(F) Too much content available for free or for smaller amount online, people have thier money for entertainment already segregated. Earlier most of the people's only means of entertainment was cinema or cable/dish television at home. But with pandemic, the dependence it created for majority of Indian audience to look at OTT platforms or YouTube. Even people who never knew to operate mobile phones, the elderly or mid 40s and mid 50s, or people with lower income, have now become dependent on mobile phone entertainment. Now more people prefer to watch 200-300 short videos with variety of content in 3 hrs in the comfort of their personal space than a full ass movie in theater.

So unless a movie is a big event, it is going to suffer. Ofcourse it will all change, but if you wait for the change to happen on its own, BW is fool. They need to step up thier game.

Another important point, Bollywood and it's idiots stop acting like victim when few thousand troll group who are inter connected start boycotting your movie. You might think you may get sympathy, but no it has reverse effect. Because you dumb fcuks have enough material online from your previous years which will not only eliminate the sympathy, but rather make people even more angry towards you.

People give importance to content nowadays. Why waste your hard earned money on watching some garbage flick when you can watch the same on OTT? Also we have dearth of good and distinctive actors. They all look and act the same, at least most of them. This unusual fetish with remakes and sequels doesn’t help either.

Yup. It was a good movie. I think people were also more inclined towards watching it because they wanted to know the backstory and plight of the KPs.

I second HearMeRoar's, TeluguAmmayi's and IWILLDIESINGLE's take on the subject...

I guess, the pandemic times have just accelerated a process bound to happen in any way.

Nevertheless, I've faith in Hindi Cinema and in those involved in making movies who love it from the heart (and not predominently from a financial aspect).

And yes, the time of remakes or copying should definitely be over...it also gave/gives a bad reputation to Hindi Cinema overseas.

It isn't an easy and quick way to abandon formulas which once were successful...and it neither is a successful way without throwbacks...some already tried way before the pandemic to do changes, to challenge the audience with new ideas going against expectations cherished by a substantial part of the audience (who prefered to live - moviewise - in a well-known comfort zone).

And then, there are some people of the Hindi entertainment industry who really should reconsider their attitude...they definitely have lost a certain humility/grace/kindness and respect.

Bollywood became overconfident with its approach to filmmaking. When Actors become Producers, they want to use themselves as the main cast. They do so not because they suit the role, it's because they think they are the "BEST". Filmmaking is just another business for them these days. There is less art only money. Lack of good music, strong scripts. SSR's death disillusioned many and the muck in the industry has disturbed a lot of people. The arrogance of the Bollywood Actors' and the constant bashing of a certain community only added to it.

Today's generation has better options and is more cognizant of what they would like to watch unlike us. Earlier the choices were limited. I am done with Hindi movies for the time being.

Lack of good writing, change in audience habits because of the pandemic, more options because of exposure to choices across OTT platforms (in multiple languages with subs/ dubbed audio), Bollywood getting a bad reputation because of nepotism, not much good music, the biggest stars- the Khans, floundering because of age/poor script choices/both...there are many reasons.

Yes to everything said in this post.

Also too much of non talented cast and crew are being shoved on to public which has overtime resulted in sub par products.

The real reason is maine sabka dimaag hack kar liya hai. People will now only watch movies if I want them to.
