Salman was neck to neck with SRK in 90s which is something that magazines and media also said.

Even in online polls he ended up in a tie with SRK in star of decade polls in 1999-2000.

SRK was hyped most and was more media friendly. His story was like fairy tale from DD's serials to huge films as lead hero.

But Salman was deffo no less with BBs like MPK, HAHK, Pyar kiya toh darna kya, Judwa, HSSH, Biwi no1, Saajan, Sanam Bewafa, HDDCS etc.

Though I agree SRK was always given more credit for his films, was more media savvy, got more awards compared to Salman who was always more in news for controversies or bad behaviour and affairs or fights with media and credit for his films was given more to heroines than him or he was reduced to a merely handsome or stylish body builder. His acting talent has never been appreciated despite good comic timing in AAA, where he was more natural than Aamir or action in Veergati or emotional scenes in MPK, HAHK.

BO and popularity wise they were neck to neck. But in terms of media favours, awards and perception it was SRK above all.

Hands down SRK it is!

The reason was that Srk did a very nasty parody of Hrithik in an advertisement, he even mocked his facial features in an insulting way, so much so that Rakesh Roshan planned to go to the court but Hrithik asked him not to pursue.

Thats the reason why media went AFTER Srk and not the OTHER GUYS.

It doesn't matter in the context of Salman's stardom since he wasn't the central figure in the film's success which was WOM driven. Madhuri, Renukaji, Tuffy and the music of the movie had more buzz than Salman's character in HAHK 😆.

His PR in 90's was on fire equivalent to Deepika's . No wonder people have bought into this myth. 🤣

Perception, narrative, buzz and momentum matters more than reality so when SRK plays the media game better than anyone else, it is bound to have a positive impact on his stardom.

He also made a lot easier for them to sell his story with consistently successful films in a very short span of time (93-98). From what I remember, the media was ready to anoint him as no. 1 post DDLJ but he had a poor 1996 which kinda delayed it by 1-2 years. But once he had DTPH and KKHH in back to back years, I don't think there was any doubt who the no. 1 was.

And to add to my earlier post, SRK either had the author backed role or was the central figure in most of his Hits in this phase unlike Salman. Just counting and comparing the number of hits hardly gives you the whole picture. A Darr or a Baazigarr does a lot more for SRK than something like Sanam Bewafa for instance 😆. And quite frankly a lot of the films highlighted are chindi hits compared to DDLJ, DTPH and KKHH.

Having said that I would readily admit that's Salman phase from 2010-2017 was the best that any star has had since peak Bachchan but he was a distant no. 2 in the 90s and largely irrelevant in the 2000s .

Joke of the century to claim Salman Khan was not the central figure in HAHK, MPK and other hits he gave.

Rather it is SRK who has always relied on PR, buying awards, kissing ass of Filmfare editors and took advantage of Aamir and Salman and Amitabh's bad relations with media, boycotts of media, to lick boots of media and become first media friendly star. He relied on jodi with one actress which he milked to the hilt. He relied on good music and NRI lover boy roles and foreign locations and became pet of YRF.

SRK never ever had raw stardom or power to draw audience like hordes without marketing. Heck. Even Sunny Deol's Gadar beat shit out of Khans', Dharmas, Chopras overhyped multi starrers shot abroad with same old jodidaar actress.

SRK always cashed on media. Or weak phases and breaks of other actors. Media is so kind to him that he is called king even though Aamir long overtook him since Ghajini and even new guys like Ranbir and Ranveer are giving bigger hits than this has been lover boy one trick pony.

Media overhyped SRK even in 1997 though it is Sunny's Border that was highest grosser of that year. SRK was down in 1999 when Salman gave hits like HSSH, Biwi no.1.

It is funny how credit for films of Salman or Aamir is given to script or heroine while credit for SRK hits in given to him even if he is newbie or villain like Darr (funny if people assume SRK got it opening) or in multi starrers like K3G.

Media compared Hrithik to Salman also due to his body and looks FYI and to Aamir also as HR had same perfectionist tendencies in acting or taking gaps between releases. He was rather called better than all 3 Khans and future all rounder superstar.
