Salman Khan leads in every category – highest net collections, success ratio, hit ratio and the best average per film. He also has the highest grosser and the most watched film of the 90s in Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Salman and Shah Rukh are the only two actors to average more than 10 crore plus per film.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn – 33 films
  • Salman Khan – 29 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 28 films
  • Aamir Khan – 23 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 1990 – 1999:

  • Salman Khan – 375 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 327 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 221 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 196 crore
  • Aamir Khan – 186 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 1990 – 1999

  • Salman Khan – 12.9 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 11.7 crore
  • Aamir Khan – 8.1 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 6.7 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 4.7 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better

  • Salman Khan – 52%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 39%
  • Ajay Devgn – 36%
  • Aamir Khan – 35%
  • Akshay Kumar – 24%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Salman Khan – 45%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 32%
  • Aamir Khan – 22%
  • Ajay Devgn – 18%
  • Akshay Kumar – 10%

Note: We haven’t included two prolific actors – Sunny Deol and Govinda – in the list. Deol was a superstar, even though he wasn’t very consistent at the box office. He had quite a few hugely successful films like Border, Darr, Zindi and Ghatak, just to name a few. Govinda delivered several hits with David Dhawan and was one of the most popular and successful actors of the 90s. We are currently in the process of retrieving data from old film magazines. We are also working with a well-known trade analyst to rectify the 90s data, which isn’t as accurate as we’d want it to be at the moment.

Box office numbers doesn’t equates to being loved or legendary. SRK in coming years will always be remembered as the most loved actor who portrayed Characters like Raj, Rahul, Devdas and many more. No one will remember box office figures, people only remember memorable characters 😃

Higher Box Office numbers always comes when ppl watch those films more than once in theatres. We call it Repeat value.

Prem / Radhe are also legendary characters, so much popular that film's name is kept on that. Forget character, Salman's firoza bracelet is more popular than few stars 😆

EXACTLY.

If box office status blockbusters & hits and all of the huge successes is not a measure of popularity than I don't think so any SUBJECTIVE and PERCEIVED thoughts can be

Discrediting the one who ruled a decade , despite all facts and figures written on the wall won't make any difference to the history of 90's Bollywood.

90s: it was Salman in India.

Those who pick SRK are usually NRIs. SRK absolutely ruled over UK/USA post-DDLJ for around 15 years.

In India, that wasn't the case.

90s, it's Salman.

00s, it's SRK.

10s, it's Salman.

90s was neck to neck between SRK and Salman. Wildly popular and gave huge grossers. 2000s belongs to Aamir with great hits like Ghajini, 3I, TZP, RDB, DCH and Oscar nominated Lagaan and later giving big hits like PK, D3, Dangal till mid 2010s.

This is true. Salman's bracelet and catch phrases are more popular than many stars.

And he may be bashed online but his Prem, Sameer, Chulbul Pandey characters are loved in real life by masses. Among 90s stars there is hands down no other male actor who has as much fan following among males of all ages as Salman. He is loved by women too but his male following is greater than any male star post Bachchan era.

Among loved characters Aamir scores above others too with likes of Munna, Amar, Raj, Bhuvan, Akash, Rancho, PK, DJ, Nikumbh sir etc while others have only same Raj or Rahul to harp on.

I daresay Aamir and Salman have more versatile characters that people love and are not limited to one genre. Salman's both lover and family man Prem and comical Prem of AAA are iconic. And other characters are action oriented. Aamir is also versatile in range of popular characters. Same cannot be said of SRK whose even villainous characters like Rahul of Darr are basically obsessed lover boys. SRK is primarily a lover boy type only.

Salman is easily in league of Dharmendra and Bachchan, Rajinikanth in terms of popularity among masses. More rooted appeal and not merely an NRI lover boy.

90s belonged to SRK. I am not even a fan but let's not rewrite history here. When Hrithik emerged in 2000, there's a reason why the media went after SRK and not the other guys.

I'm sure some folks will respond with HAHK and it's gazillion footfalls but it doesn't matter. Truth is SRK got way more mileage out of films like DDLJ, DTPH and KKHH than Salman ever did with HAHK.
