Sherni

The screenplay could have been more engaging. But the movie sheds light on a relatively unknown issue of conservation in India.

Miracle Workers S1, S2, and S3

This is a fun quirky comedy series. The humor is absurdist and really utilizes the unique personalities of Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi. It is also good to see people like Geraldine Vishwanathan and Karan Soni in major roles.

It was great irony to see the controversy around Rings of Power blow up on my timeline as I watched this series with black and brown people as angels, as regular citizens in medieval Europe and in the Wild Wild West. I guess when a show is so irreverent and absurd no one can accuse it of wokeness.

Begum Jaan: A terrible terrible movie. The movie is set during the partition times. Begum Jaan is a child widow who becomes a famous prostitute after growing up. She rescues all poor and helpless women who are mostly victims of the society and then makes them prostitutes like her. I don't know how those women even respect her and look upto her. The movie even shows a 10 year old girl imagining Begum Jaan as Jhansi ki Rani, Razia Sultan and other brave female freedom fighters while listening to their stories. On the other hand Begum Jaan forces a gangrape victim who hadn't even come out of the trauma to sleep with a man her grandfather's age. 🤢 On one hand she keeps complaining that she's not getting customers due to partition and on the other hand doesn't want to leave her brothel at any cost. There was a scene where she said, only the country got freedom but we prostitutes will never get freedom. Maybe they got a chance to get freedom from prostitution by leaving their brothel and going somewhere far away where no one knows them and they could have started their lives afresh but they rather chose to die to protect their brothel.

None of the starcast acted well. Vidya shouldn't have done this movie.

Sita Ramam:

The first half is not very strong. Takes some time to find its feet. Gets better as it goes along. It's got this old world charm and I liked the love story between Ram and 'Sita'. Dulqer and Mrunal also work as a couple. Just not sure if the film as a whole works. Mrunal looked soo good in every saree and outfit. Such a treat to the eyes. 😳

I felt the pacing was a bit dragged even though the movie does build up as the story etches back 20 years ago. Mrunal & Dulqer did have an understated chemistry. No doubt, Mrunal looked pretty in sarees but she looked really pretty when being portrayed as a dancer.

Ghosts UK S1, 2, and 3

This is one of the most innovative and refreshingly funny shows I have seen in a long time. It is not a horror comedy but a full-blown sitcom. A young couple, Alison and Mike Cooper inherit a mansion through an obscure connection with a rich heiress. They plan to renovate the mansion and turn it into a hotel.

However, the mansion is rundown and will take everything they have. But that's not the end of it. The mansion is inhabited by the ghosts of people who have died on the grounds over centuries. After a freak accident that gave her a near-death experience - Alison can now see and interact with the ghosts.

The ensemble cast is absolutely hilarious. It's not your typical laugh-out-loud fare, but you will find yourself chuckling often enough. Lolly Adefope is the best - why isn't she a global sensation? I started watching Ghosts because of her in Miracle Workers.

There are only 20 episodes in the first three seasons. That is barely a whole season of the average American sitcom. And I think that's the key. It keeps the writing fresh, keeps the content limited, and makes you crave for more and more.

Delhi crime 2 -

Not bad web series --- actually quite decent execution. As one of members said, one of the major issues was the excessive use of English and lack of proper transition from the regeneration of an old gang being used as a shield for the criminals in this case to nabbing the actual culprit as the episodes narrate the case story. I would've liked to see 1-2 more episodes, though, in order to have a better transition and nabbing the criminal red-handed (kinda felt rushed).

But, other than that, the way the case was unraveled and the lack of materialistic items and the woven dreams which were ignored + the controversial (even though, it's subtle and dismissed quickly amongst commoners) reactions amongst people can give rise to criminals. Speaking of which, the old adage of how certain people are considered as "born criminals" and the reaction to it has been nicely executed and is quite visible throughout the scenes w/o explaining it in the viewer's face.

Also, it was nice to see decent exposure of some of the police officer's lives and how it's often intertwined with their professional lives. I kinda felt bad for Neeti in that such her husband is such a selfish jerk despite himself being a military personnel. Like come on! Neeti was much more interested in solving the case since her domestic problems did nothing but eat her mind up. I'm not saying there should be a work-life balance but not respecting one's space & being selfish was completely stupid on Neeti's husband part. What he failed to see is that she's also trying to balance both but isn't perfect and prioritized his money/savings. Ughh!

Shefali was stellar as the team lead and had no-nonsense behavior but was also concerned about her team members both on the professional + personal front. I can relate to her character as my own mentor in my company has a similar demeanor which I like tbh and gets things rolling but also not losing the human side of ensuring the team members' wellbeing.

Tillotama did a decent job as a criminal and the show did a decent job as to explaining the reason behind her criminal activity.

Yep she was very good in those palace dance sequences. ❤️

Uni Ki Yaari: I feel the web series is just too rehearsed. Felt it was jumping all over the places.

Indian Predator The Diary of a Serial Killer (Netflex) - really boring web series. Case story had good potential to be explained but felt like a newbie wrote the storyline. Felt research was limited.
