Only Murders in the Building S2

Our quirky trio of murder podcasters is back for their second season. Only Murders in the Building is a refreshing take on true crime. The show parodies the true crime genre with some clever writing and a cast of colorful characters.

Season two follows Mabel, Charles, and Oliver trying to defend themselves from being accused of Bunny's murder. Podcaster Cinda Canning and Officer Kreps are however determined to pin the trio for the crime.

In a rare departure for the murder genre, the show is hilariously funny. But along with the humor, there is authenticity and vulnerability as well. All the characters have their personal challenges to overcome. The show often harkens to loneliness and emptiness in a busy world. Most importantly how obsessive podcast investigation can upend the lives of real people.

It's incredible to see Steve Martin and Martin Short connect with a whole new generation of viewers. Even more incredible to see Selena Gomez connect and work with them - bridging generations. This season's new character Lucy is a zoomer. The show reiterates that despite our differences we have much more in common than we think.

Checked this out recently on Hotstar and it was a knockout. Think of Khosla Ka Ghosla but set in 2022.

After our beloved Copywood decided to churn out another spectacular masterpiece in form of Cuttputlli, I thought of watching the movie Ratsasan, the 2018 movie.

It's totally not connected to the aforementioned masterpiece. /s

So, the movie started off well. The execution, however, lost its way somewhere in between. Too many slow-mo scenes where the audience would want a fast-paced storytelling without any dragging. Some scenes are completely unnecessary and some aren't utilized. The main character's family faces a tragedy which, despite given enough weight at its occurrence, isn't resolved by the end. It's as if this tragedy didn't even happen.

The movie has many, many errors, made only for the sake of dragging the film. The characters don't shy away from acting the way that is very typical of horror movie characters — dumb and foolish. The movie creates a good suspense about who is the murderer and brings in a twist, although it does become predictable very early itself.

The characters are mindlessly killed to give us an idea of the murderer's sadism, but absolutely no one, other than the main character, is given any chance for us to care about them. If I don't care about the people getting killed in the movie, the murderer doesn't leave an impact. The movie tries to focus on the relationships as well, but none are explored enough for us to care about them.

It is emotionally heavy for all the right reasons and continues well with its bleak and dark atmosphere, but is weak in other departments. I'm wondering if Cuttputlli really is as good as critics have said it is. I'll never know...

The Lost City

The movie is silly at times but such fun. It takes inspiration from treasure hunt movies like National Treasure and Indiana Jones that blend archeology and history with action adventure. But it flips many of the common tropes.

- Loretta Sage the protagonist played by Sandra Bullock is not a treasure hunter but a romance novelist and heartbroken widow

- Channing Tatum's character Alan is not a dashing adventurer or action hero but merely a handsome cover model

- Daniel Radcliffe is having way too much fun as the villain Abigail Fairfax a criminal millionaire and treasure hunter

- Channing Tatum becomes the unwitting damsel in distress because he actually has nothing he can contribute to the treasure hunt

- It is delightful to see Alan smitten with Loretta Sage and act desperate to feel seen and recognized as more than just a pretty face

- I like that Channing Tatum is a good 16 or so years younger than Sandra Bullock and plays her love interest (or she is his love interest?), we need more of that

- Brad Pitt has a delightful cameo

The movie has plenty of one liners and double entendres that keep the flick entertaining from start to finish. It's really an enjoyable watch.

Cuttputli --- I think the thriller portions of the movie had more substances (nothing extraordinary, so good decision to release the movie on OTT platform) --- Akshay's role had more meat wherein he investigates the case as the SI & the loss of Arjan's niece to the situation which compelled him to further investigate & not let any other daughter become the target's next victim. Portions with typical cliches between Divya & Arjan were boring to witness. Sargun excelled in her role as senior police officer --- felt more acting prowess between her and Akshay (though scenes weren't extraordinary)). Actor playing the magician villain was too lame in comparison to the original version of the movie. Ending just felt too typical & boring. Rakul's role didn't have much meat tbh except for probably bringing in her observations which aid in the case.

Watched Hit The First Case on Netflix. The story looked interesting but the movie was too lengthy and boring. I was just pausing the movie all the time to see how many more minutes for it to end. 😆The movie is about a homicide intervention officer whose mental condition is nor great due to his traumatic past and how he solves 2 kidnapping cases of a teenage girl and his girlfriend.

Rajkumar Rao was as usual good. Sanya Malhotra was wasted in the movie. The rest of the cast were good too. The climax was different. For the first time I saw a movie where the people who committed crimes were actually good people though the movie didn't justify their crimes. 👍🏼After Cuttputli, this is one more movie that showed that our hypocrite society creates criminals out of people. Just like in Cuttputli, the society turned a progeria patient into a psychopath killer in this movie too the society didn't accept a lonely divorced woman making her go to any extent to seek attention and also made a lesbian girl feel ashamed of her sexuality.

Sita Ramam --- Nice periodic film exploring humanity in differing shades but bit dragged. Mrunal & Dulquer did their parts very decently. Rashmika did her part decently also. Visually, the aesthetics and cinematography was nice. Nuances of Sita by Mrunal were not bad.

Top Gun : Maverick

Contains Spoilers

The movie basically picks up from 30 after the previous Top Gun movie. Captain Pete Mitchell aka Maverick is asked to return to the Top Gun academy to train the Top Gun graduates to train them for a mission which requires them to destroy an unsanctioned uranium plant. Maverick returns and runs into Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw who blames Maverick for his father's death. He also rekindles his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Penny.

They are able to successfully destroy the Uranium plant but Maverick's plane gets shot down and Rooster stays back to find Maverick instead of returning back. The climax focuses on Maverick and Rooster finding their way back . The film ends with Rooster and Maverick putting their differences aside and celebrating mission success together.

The movie pretty stays consistent to its original material and the flight scenes are really well shot which is why it ends up working for me.

Rating : 8/10

Thiruchitrambalam ---

I think the movie was sweet & fine. Sweet slice-of-life movie to watch with the family and friends. Family friction and ambiance, romance, love attempts, small thriller (but a reason to build rebuild the relationships and forgive)., etc. Good elements. Ending was adorable. Highly recommended.
