SOTY 2 Movie Review: Tiger Shroff starrer is all about dapper dudes, pretty girls & colorful campus

Check out the full movie review of Student of the year 2

by Newsd Updated on Friday 10th May 2019, 10:59 AM

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Karan Johar’s second installment of popular Student of the year is back and the most awaited movie released today. The story is based on a small town boy Rohan Sehgal (Tiger Shroff) who is madly in love with his childhood sweetheart Mridula (Tara Sutaria). He follows her to the city’s top college but this new journey brings a lot of changes in his life along with friends, enemies, competition, and heartbreak.

The class of 2019 at Dehradun’s best college Saint Teresa is all about pretty girls, dapper dudes with rippling muscles, hot wheels and a colorful campus buzzing with extra-curricular activities. Tiger Shroff is at its best when he takes admission on a sports quota.

Things take a sharp turn when Tiger’s many talents become a problem for the current poster boy of the college Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal) and his sister (Ananya Panday). The whole drama is what causes love, ladies and competitiveness.

Mainly the story revolves around these four characters and how they fall in and out of love. But the best part that remains is that there is no heartbreak that shattered them. All the character are rock solid until the end.

On the technical front, the camera shows his physical wreck. The leading ladies of the film movements are captured beautifully especially when it comes to Tiger Shroff. His heroic skills are captured with great attention whether he is dancing, running on the track, playing Kabbadi or doing his infamous stunts, the camera captures all with small detailing. His sharp looks capture the screen well and even always seen glammed up in the best designer dresses. While Tara’s performance seemed underwhelming due to the strength of his character, but Nanaya character carries well in the film, thanks to the convincing back story which worked in her favor.

While a lot more comedy and humor were expected from the film, the best laugh scenes came from Tiger’s gang. YouTuber Harsh Beniwal leaves a lasting impression with his natural flair of humor he has.

More of the scenes are out of the classroom and the drama contains outside that. More focus is laid on sports, dance, and romance. The chemistry between Tiger and the debutants are the highlight.

The film narrative remains light and focus. Over the visual appeal of the movie is good. ‘A good one time watch’ this weekend.

Student of the Year 2 review: Is this class worth attending?

Ambica Sachin

Filed on May 10, 2019

The Tiger Shroff-Tara Sutaria-Ananya Panday rom-com works due to the trio's earnest performances.

There's something definitely entertaining about watching a bunch of super-fit, good looking 20-somethings with perpetually blow dried hair and on point makeup prancing around the big screen for 2 and a half hours clad in their designer best. Call it guilty pleasure or escapism, let's get one thing out of the way, nobody goes for a Karan Johar (SOTY2 producer) movie expecting great cinema. So the sprawling St Teresa campus in Mussouri where 'model' students seem to be on a perpetual ramp walk, with nary a text book in sight: where the boys can throw the meanest punch without ruffling their gelled hair, are all part of the game.

Since the first SOTY directed by Karan Johar in 2012 was deemed a huge hit launching the careers of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, expectations were naturally high of the Punit Malhotra directed SOTY2.

Much to the joy of SOTY fans we are happy to pronounce that the second edition is equally glossy and picture perfect, though as only to be expected, shallow. Rohan Sachdev (an extremely buff Tiger Shroff) and Manav Singhania (Aditya Seal who is a sure sight for sore eyes) spend an entire academic year preparing for the prestigious Student of the Year competition where the focus is not on academics (as you must have learnt from the first movie) but on winning a Kabbadi match. Why Kabbadi, you may ask. Perhaps KJo was doing his bit to promote the lesser popular sport - he certainly infuses a cool factor to the game with his players doing back flips and slow- mo jumps a la Keanue Reeve in Matrix.

Mridula or Mia (the superbly cast Tara Sutaria) and Shreya (a fresh faced Ananya Panday) play the love interests. There are 'two' many love triangles, all of which seem extremely forced and it would have made a great plot point except sadly there is absolutely no chemistry to speak of between all the couples involved. Admittedly all the four leads put in earnest performances - Tiger in particular plays the underdog from Pishorilal Chamandas College, who gets his heart broken, with trademark restraint.

Tara has enormous screen presence and is a natural on screen though her character comes across as shallow. Ditto with Ananya who shows potential - though as a poor little rich kid who develops a crush on the hero she flounders in comparison to her co actors' natural act. Ananya is given ample opportunity to showcase her dad, Chunky's comic genes, which she could excel in.

But if the romantic pairings lack the spark, Rohan and Manav's bromance more than makes up for it! Though again Manav's character isn't etched properly so the sibling rivalry between him and Shreya isnt explored at all as well as his equation with Mia.

At 2 and a half hours the movie can seem long. Will Smith makes a blink and you miss it special appearance in between the Yeh Jawani song. And just when you thought they had cut out Alia Bhatt's special item number, lo and behold she appears as the credits start rolling (maybe it's time filmmakers resist trying to keep audiences in theaters after the last shot is done with?) Despite a bare chested Tiger doing his best, sadly Alia doesn't have the oomph to make the catchy Hook Up number work.

Overall SOTY2 works because of th earmest performances from all four lead actors who are ably supported by some excellent actors in other side roles -specially Rohan's Pishori friends. It might come across as all fluff and not much soul but the pretty faces more than compensate. If you are a fan of KJo's feel good movies detached from reality, then SOTY2 is for you.

Student Of The Year 2 Has Average Start

Friday 10 May 2019 12.30 ISTBox Office India Trade Network

Twitter logo link

Student Of The Year 2 took an average of opening of around 20-25%. Its a good start for the economics of the film as it does not have a big budget but its the next release after Baaghi 2 when Tiger Shroff smashed the box office and because of his presence the expectations are probably there for a better start.

The opening in the multiplexes is pretty much in the range of a Total Dhamaal but the collections in Central India and Gujarat are well short of Total Dhamaal. The film is not in the zone of a Baaghi 2 and even though it might have action in it, the film is more of a college musical romance which limits that mass audience. Tiger Shroff has a huge following in CP, Nizam, Maharashtra and East India which could be second to Salman Khan only but this film probably holds less appeal for them which could be reflected in the figures. It will be interesting to see at what levels the mass circuits come in at.

This will probably leave the film as more of a multiplex film and dependent on the growth over the weekend. There is a big IPL match today which could affect collections. The collections were hit of all films on Tuesday which saw a big match

The mass crowd ain't coming out much for this one eh? Probably looking at 11-12 crore today. Let's see how it plays out.

To sum it up, #StudentOfTheYear2 is engaging, entertaining however not for the one's looking for logic. The film should satisfy taste buds of @iTIGERSHROFF fans. At Box-Office, it should do respectable business, especially in mass belts. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Two debutants, #AnanyaPanday and #TaraSutaria make their presence felt, however wish their characters had more meat. However, the former's backstory is relatable. #AdityaSeal as Tiger's competitor is fine.

The kabbadi sequences are well choreographed with @iTIGERSHROFF excelling in them like a pro. The screenplay in the finale is nail biting, and evokes the right amount of emotion for the underdogs. #StudentOfTheYear2

Not really a fan of #StudentOfTheYear, but the sequel is an engaging film staying true to the "High School - Oh So Rich vs Oh So Poor" genre. The 150 minute film doesn't bore you, though surely could have been a bit crisp and less filmy. But none the less, an entertaining film.

Director: Punit Malhotra

Rating: 1.5 Stars (out of 5)

The world has moved on in the seven years since the kitschy college caper Student Of The Year launched the careers of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. The actors in the follow-up are a fresh bunch led by Tiger Shroff, but the concoction is exasperatingly stale and unabashedly trashier. Student Of The Year 2 is so last decade in its thinking and packaging that sitting through it is akin to straying into a Bollywood time warp.

The Dharma Productions sheen is all that the film boasts. The rest of it is mere flashy, garish festooning that is torn to shreds before you are a quarter of the way into the film. Plenty of sports action and a couple of fight sequences are thrown into the hackneyed mix, but nothing can lift this gossamer bauble of a movie out of its mediocrity.

Student Of The Year 2 is an egregiously escapist campus-rumpus musical in which nattily attired, unbelievably idle boys and skimpily clad girls (none of whom looks like a college student interested in attending classes and making academic progress) play games that make as much sense as a camel race on an airport tarmac.

Tiger Shroff plays down his action hero persona a tad and slips into the garb of a lover boy, livewire sprinter, kabbadi champ and dance freak all rolled into one. The middle class underdog's arrival in an upscale college in Dehradun sets the cat among the pigeons. Two girls compete for his attention, each in her own way. The boy also has to contend with a hard-knuckled rival who challenges him at every step of the contest to win the Student of the Year title, often very violently.

This is brainlessly breezy fare wrapped in gloss that wears off quickly. It is sad to see such silly stuff being palmed off as teen entertainment. Even more dispiriting is the fear that Student Of The Year 2 might actually end up finding enthusiastic takers. The film blows hot and cold through two and a half hours of unmitigated fluff. Beautiful bods and cool musical acts are poor recompense for the sheer lack of substance.

Tiger Shroff plays Rohan, who, to begin with, is an outsider in the ritzy environs of St. Teresa's College. As he buckles down to the task of fitting in, bullies get in the way. He must prove his worth beyond doubt in order to be accepted. He is a man who wants to be a class apart, but owing to the way the role has been envisioned the actor is trapped in an absolutely predictable corridor.

The two newbies opposite the lead actor, Tara Sutaria (as the hero's childhood sweetheart Mia) and Ananya Panday (as a neglected rich girl thirsting for true love Shreya) are enthusiastic enough and sway energetically to the uninspiring beat of the film but cannot add their own individual rhythms to the pulpy drama.

Student Of The Year 2 flunks every test on the parameters of both writing and crafting. For a genuine lover of Hindi popular cinema, it is more trauma than dram

Student of the Year 2’ movie review: All games and no fun

Punit Malhotra’s follow-up to Karan Johar’s 2012 film stars Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Panday and Aditya Seal.

Nandini Ramnath12 minutes ago

Tara Sutaria, Tiger Shroff and Ananya Panday in Student of the Year 2 (2019). | Dharma Productions

The sequel that nobody wanted is neither an improvement over the original nor a downgrade of it. The bar is low to begin with, and when the butter-limbed Tiger Shroff is around, it’s easily surmounted.

Karan Johar’s Student of the Year (2012) centred on an intra-school athletic competition that was placed on par with a war between nuclear powers. SOTYwas crammed with slow-motion displays of epilated, chiselled bodies moulded into designer clothing (when not semi-clothed) and a series of brightly-lit songs. It worked only when it didn’t take itself seriously, which wasn’t very often. Punit Malhotra’s sequel runs even further away from frivolity, losing much of the fun of high school life in the process.

A glammed-up version of Mansoor Khan’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Student of the Year 2 is a bit more grounded in reality. The main sport is the earthy discipline of kabbadi, rather than athletics, and the annual competition between the students of St Teresa has now gone inter-school.

But the stakes remain high as the middle-class Rohan (Tiger Shroff) takes on the wealthy Manav (Aditya Seal), the overachieving son of one of the school’s trustees. Rohan has entered St Teresa on a sports scholarship, in part to be close to his sweetheart Mia (Tara Sutaria). He is shown his place by the quietly ruthless Manav and Manav’s bratty sister, Shreya (Ananya Panday).

Loading video

Sports are for boys and dance for girls in the movie’s neatly ordered universe. But since Tiger Shroff excels at both, he eventually gets to the point where his kabbadi skills are indistinguishable from his terpsichorean talents. Although Shroff (real age 29) is just about convincing as a fit and nimble high-school student, Aditya Seal (real age 31) is a stretch as Manav. Crowned with a distracting pompadour, Seal attempts to bridge the age gap by breathing icy menace into Manav.

Arshad Syed’s screenplay makes a fainthearted attempt to deal with the class divide between Rohan and Manav, but loses interest in the service of counting down to the climactic kaddabi battle. The love triangle between Rohan, Mia and Shreya has its moments, all delivered by the perky Ananya Panday, who is the only character at the end of 146 minutes who seems to be enjoying herself.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review Rating: 1.5/5 Stars (One and a half stars)

Star Cast: Harsh Beniwal, Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday, Tara Sutaria, Aditya Seal

Director: Punit Malhotra

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2

What’s Good: There are three special appearances in the film – Alia Bhatt, Will Smith & Common Sense!

What’s Bad: We might see Student Of The Year 3in which students might compete for the Olympics and Karan Johar will be the torchbearer… (Did you see what I did there?)

Loo Break: If you take one, you could either miss – a needless action sequence by Tiger, an unwanted tantrum by Ananya, nothing by Tara and a song suffering from an existential crisis

Watch or Not?: Even if you’re a Harsh Beniwal fan, watch a montage of his portions edited out of the film. You’ll save yourself some life!

User Rating:

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2

So, the story (hahahaha!) starts with a flashy sequence in which we see Rohan (Tiger Shroff) playing for Student Of The Year 2‘s trophy. Next, we see he’s from a very ordinary Pishorilal Chamandas college and joins the ‘elite’ St. Teresa because his girlfriend Mridula aka Mia is in that college. “You can take out a student of Pishorilal but you can’t take Pishorilal out of a student” Yes, that sounded wrong but that’s what happens with Rohan.

Following his girlfriend to Teresa, he meets Shreya (Ananya Panday) and they come close to each other because they both like to dance. Mia starts disliking Rohan because he’s a ‘bloody gawaar’, and Rohan starts getting attracted to Shreya. Mia realises her she’s wrong, Rohan realises he’s right, Shreya doesn’t realise anything. All of this is backed by people playing Kabbadi, Will Smith doing a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in a song, Samir Soni shouting ‘Gooooood morning’ and a lot of people doing a lot of stupid stuff.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

It seems Arshad Sayed while penning the story of this film, knew this will be high on production value, will get few good looking actors, some tik-tok trending songs and that’s why he didn’t really put any efforts to his working department. There’s not a single aspect to take out of the script because it’s bland. It has nothing to say and it says that nothing badly.

It follows the traditional format of casting beautiful characters, give them no strong content, make sure they are pleasing to your eyes & pain to your a**. The action sequences which weren’t required at all, are smoothly choreographed and might find a place in any of the other Tiger movies. It’s disappointing to see a very entertaining Student Of The Year getting such a second-rate sequel.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Let’s start with the (only) best: Harsh Beniwal – this guy is all set to become the first Youtuber to make it big in Bollywood. I went in as a fan & came out as a proud fan. His character deserved more & it could’ve been an epic blend of humour and entertainment.

Tiger Shroff is good when he’s dancing or performing action scenes, but as soon as he starts to act – he reminds you that he still can’t. Continuing the stubble(y) look from Baaghi 2, he definitely looks good with that unmatchable physique; it’s just this isn’t the kind of film for him.

Ananya Panday, the charming relief of the film, tries too hard to make her presence feel. There’s no doubt about her alluring appearance but she needs to prove a lot before gaining any points in the acting department. Tara is sidelined! Her character is written lazily & it just doesn’t justify a glorifying debut. She’s hot but she’s lost; tries to fulfil director’s bleak vision. Aditya Seal is decent but has nothing much to contribute to the film.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Punit Malhotra is back after a sabbatical post a disastrous Gori Tere Pyaar Mein & he has improved. The movie looks fairly rich and so his direction. He avoids abrupt cuts & is aided by picturesque cinematography. All he needed was a good script.

The music album is one of the weakest by Vishal-Shekhar. There isn’t a single song you could take away from the film. They’ve ruined Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Jatt Ludhiyane Da doesn’t click & Hookup Song worsens the final feeling you take from the film.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, I don’t mind cheesy Dharma movies (loved the part 1) but this one is just a needless sequel. They could’ve titled this as ‘Not-A-Student Of The Year’, and still, it would’ve have been equally bad.

One and a half stars!

Student of The Year 2 REVIEW: In typical Karan Johar narrative, Ananya Panday and Aditya Seal steal the show and are the USP of this soulless sequel

10-05-2019 12:33 pm

Seven years back, ace-filmmaker Karan Johar launched three debutants in Bollywood through 'Student of The Year'- Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Alia Bhatt. So, with Punit Malhotra now taking over the baton, will Principal Karan Johar's latest graduating batch pass the test? Read here

Setting the Scene:

Rohan Sachdev (Tiger Shroff) is a rather promising student, with a flair in sports. Although he comes from a poor background, and studies in Mussourie's Pishorilal Chamandas College, one can say that he is capable of much more, yes with the right direction of course.

But, the thing hindering him is his infatuation with his childhood sweetheart, Mia (Tara Sutaria). As predicted, suddenly gifted with a scholarship, Rohan (Tiger Shroff) finds himself amongst the 'affluent' of St Teresa, where his beloved Mridula, now known as Mia (Tara) also studies.

However, things take an ugly turn when the raging star of St. Teresa and twice the champion of 'Student of The Year' trophy, Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal) sees Rohan as competition. Meanwhile, in between all this drama enters Ananya Panday, (Shreya) who is not only stealing all the limelight with her rebel moves but keeps the viewer entertained in this mediocre saga.

Plot

The film's leading man (Tiger Shroff) fits right into the scheme of things when he secures admission to Dehradun's upscale college, St. Teresa but many of his antics start becoming the cause of concern, for the current poster boy Manav (Aditya).

Shroff plays the role of a 'perfect' man in the film, aces every activity that he is involved in. Not exaggerating, but every scene of his is crafted so carefully, one might think that is rather superficial. Amid all this, are the film's leading ladies Tara and Ananya who are always glammed up and sport the best designer clothes.

However, their roles aren't tailored to perfection like Tiger Shroff's, which makes one feel like its closer to reality. While Tara's (Mia) character seems flippant with choices, the film sees Ananya (Shreya) playing the role of a rebel, one that is highly likable. What brings the twist is that she is also playing sister to present poster boy, Aditya Seal (Manav)

Verdict

From scenes to dialogues, the tale is a typical Karan Johar film that is quite predictable. A lot of drama and action remains out of the classroom, with the main focus given to sports, dance and definitely romance!

However, the chemistry between Tiger Shroff and the two debutants never really takes off and even with so many conflicts, the narrative remains light with a focus on overall 'visual appearance'. Meanwhile, the music of the film is quite average, unlike the original film, where chartbusters such as 'Radha', and 'Ishq Wala Love' can still be found on playlists.

Cast: Ananya Panday, Aditya Seal, Gul Panag, Tiger Shroff, and Tara Sutaria.

What works: Ananya Panday and Aditya Seal's heartfelt performances

What doesn't work: Music, over-dramatic scenes. The film also has a dialogue which says, "Talent Ko Angrezi Mein Kya Kehte Hai? (What is 'Talent' called in English). The two-second dialogue is so cringe-worthy, that it will make you want to head right to the door and leave.
