Student of The Year 2 Movie Review: Tiger Shroff's Film is Neither a Sports Drama nor a Campus RomanceStudent of The Year 2 Movie Review: Tiger Shroff, Ananya Pandey and Tara Sutaria's film is a sequel to the 2012 hit. Read our review here!

When you walk into an archetypal Karan Johar film you know what to expect – a gossamer dream, airbrushed from grim reality, sprinkled with impossibly good-looking people facing first world problems. Most imporantly, they are helluva lot of fun to watch. Think Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Dostana and the like that gave birth to a genre of its own. Of course, over the years, his Dharma Productions has moved away from the stereotype, offering a varied range of films that are not just restricted to the lives of the rich and beautiful. However, when you think of wealthy, gorgeous, fun and fluff, let’s admit it, you think of only KJo. That’s because no one does wealth and high-flying designer lifestyle better than Karan. And that’s why you love his films – who doesn’t like good bodies and great fashion?

So pardon us for having that benchmark while viewing Student of the Year 2 (SOTY-2) – the sequel to his 2012 teen hit that brought the colours and fun of Archie comics to a non-existing Indian campus. But here’s the catch with sequels – they come with their own baggage of expectations. Like it or not, you do tend to compare the second one to the first and if the former doesn’t match up to the latter, then it’s a big thumbs down.

From the sheer point of view of comparison then, does Student of the Year 2 measure up? Hmm, not really! Now, SOTY-1 was no classic but it was helmed by Karan himself and that lightness of touch and refinement brought it with many memorable moments. My favourite being the musical interlude with no dialogues at a wedding, featuring the three main characters – Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. There is no such moment in the Punit Malhotra-directed SOTY-2 which lies somewhere in between Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Main Hoon Naa and Student of The Year.

Rohan Sachdeva (Tiger Shroff) is the centre of attraction here. The flying student who hails from the very middle-class sounding Pishorilal Chamandas College (reference to Aamir Khan’s Rajput college in JJWS), jumps, hops, skips and dances his way into the coveted St Teresa’s college to be close to his childhood love Mia (Tara Sutaria) who is already a student there. As with the first part, there is a class difference in this film too with St Teresa standing for all things snobbish. The stars of this institution (or is it high school?) are the sibling pair of Shreya and Manav (Ananya Pandey and Aditya Seal). Rohan does not only have to win his girl back from the rich brat but also win the Student of the Year trophy and lead his team to victory in a sports competition the most important part of which is a kabaddi match. Why kabaddi? No idea. Needless to say, there is a love triangle with Shreya and Mia over Rohan.

Been there, watched that? You bet! Student of the Year 2looks like a wannabe cousin of its first part. Primarily because it lacks any of the drama or the fun that made up the original. The girls aren’t bitchy enough, the boys aren’t rough enough. The romance isn’t exciting enough and the sporting encounters are not nail-biting enough. In any campus film, the other students need to play an important part. Remember Aamir Khan’s friends and rivals in Jo Jeeta… or the supporting group narrating the story in Student of the Year? Here, they are reduced to sidekicks. There is also the mandatory LGBT character but after an introductory scene that, in many ways, appears to be a caricature, she disappears from the picture. It seems the script followed certain checklists. Dance competition? Check. Fight on the sports field? Check. Gay character? Check. Great clothes and make-up? Double check. But coolth? No check.

But all is not lost though. There are quite a few things to like about Student of The Year 2. The treatment is lightweight and easy-breezy. You don’t have high expectations, you won’t get disappointed. After a long spate of heavy historicals and headache-inducing patriotic dramas that have flooded the cinemas, a teenage romance is a refreshing break. Manish Malhotra’s fashion statements on the girls are not bad but we have seen better from him.The music is pretty foot-tapping, especially the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani remix number.

The leads are quite delightful. Tara Sutaria is a hottie. She has the X-factor and oozes oomph though one wishes her character was well-defined. Ananya Pandey does well as the poor little rich kid. The sizzle of a Pooja Bedi or Alia Bhatt is missing but she seems to have fun with her role. Aditya Seal as the campus dude and the antagonist is predictable. But the one to watch out for is Tiger Shroff who has come a long, long way from his debut film. He looks confident and has got very good screen presence. As always, he plays to his strengths – dance and action – and you can’t get enough of it.

The problem with the film is that it seems confused – should it be a candyfloss campus flick with hot chicks and hunky dudes or should it be a candyfloss campus flick with sports and tense moments? It ends up being neither. What remains is the candyfloss. Which, in retrospect, isn’t such a bad thing as you go for the movies to have a good time and be entertained. Student of the Year entertains but is too vanilla to have any lingering taste. In Hindi film parlance, I’d say, it’s a decent timepass film worth the popcorn. But frankly, it’s time for the students to graduate.

PS: What was Will Smith doing in it?

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review:

B-grade SOTY for Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday

Unless you are an ardent admirer of Tiger Shroff's flying kicks, stay away from Student Of The Year 2, says our review

Samrudhi GhoshNew DelhiMay 10, 2019UPDATED: May 10, 2019 14:08 IST

Student Of The Year 2 movie review: Ananya Panday, Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria in a still from the film

Student Of The Year 2 movie review: Ananya Panday, Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria in a still from the film

Movie Name:Student Of The Year 2

Cast:Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday, Tara Sutaria

Director:Punit Malhotra

Student Of The Year 2 is an unbelievably shallow mix of Karan Johar's Student Of The Year and Mansoor Khan's Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, with shaky performances and forgettable songs in an ultra-glamorous setting. It looks like director Punit Malhotra was so overwhelmed by the staggering budget allotted to the film that he directed all his energies towards making everyone and everything look good, and completely forgot to focus on logic and continuity in the process.

The narrative revolves around the race to the Student Of The Year trophy, a superficial competition where girls only cheer from the sidelines while the boys battle it out on the field. Of course, academics do not feature at all in determining who is the best student; all it takes is a sprint and a kabaddi match. Wish our schools were as generous.

Rohan Sachdev (Tiger Shroff), a sinewy kabaddi champ from Pishorilal Chamandas College, follows his childhood sweetheart Mridula Chawla (Tara Sutaria) to the prestigious St Teresa's College on a sports scholarship. However, Mridula has now "evolved" into Mia, and Rohan must woo her afresh. Meanwhile, he gets off on the wrong foot with poor-little-rich-girl Shreya Randhawa (Ananya Panday), who is determined to make his life miserable.

There is some manipulation and heartbreak, which results in Rohan getting kicked out of school and issuing a challenge to star student and two-time winner of the Student Of The Year award Manav Singh Randhawa (Aditya Seal) that he will walk away with the trophy this time.

Tiger Shroff is in top form, physically, and backflips and scissor-kicks his way through Student Of The Year 2. However, he does not showcase much emotional range and instead chooses to let his muscles do the talking for him. Debutantes Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria look stunning and dance like a dream, but do not have any acting skills to write home about. Aditya Seal is great in the action department, but has a limited scope of performing, thanks to the weak writing.

Continuity errors are glaring. In one scene, Rohan shows Mia the tattoo of her name that he got on his forearm. In the very next scene, he is dancing away to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani with un-inked arms. There is also a scene where the captain of the kabaddi team of Pishorilal Chamandas College is badly beaten up and has to get multiple stitches. In the next sequence, when the team is training hard to win the Dignity Cup, his bandages vanish, only to reappear a while later.

While Karan Johar's original was more diverse and also featured not-so-athletic students, the newest batch of St Teresa's seems to have only jaw-droppingly gorgeous pupils who are impeccably dressed. Awkward adolescence, what's that?

If you thought the crowd-pleasing numbers are the saving grace of Student Of The Year 2, you will be disappointed on that front too. None of the songs have the catchy quality of the original Student Of The Year album, save Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which is not an original composition anyway.

Unless you are an ardent admirer of Tiger Shroff's flying kicks, stay away from Student Of The Year 2.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Bunking This Class Won't Do Any Harm!

By Madhuri V|

Updated: Friday, May 10, 2019, 14:51 [IST]

Rating: 2.5/5

Star Cast: Tiger Shroff, Ananya Pandey, Tara Sutaria, Samir Soni, Jackie Shroff

Director: Punit Malhotra

Seven years ago, Karan Johar introduced us to his world of St. Teresa with Student Of The Year where gloss ruled over everything else. The men (Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra) had the ladies brigade drooling over their washboard abs while the lady (Alia Bhatt) dropped some major fashion goals. Two men vying for a girl's attention and a 'Student Of The Year' trophy. Perfect bods, stylish clothes, foot-tapping music. A fantasy world served as a campus drama

Cut to 2019. He passes the directorial baton to Punit Malhotra who brings in Tiger Shroff to spearhead the next film in the franchise along with two new leading ladies- Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria. But this time, there's a gender reversal. The girls got to do the chasing. Sigh, the rest all remains pretty much the same.

soty1

To begin with, Rohan (Tiger Shroff), a student from Pishorilal Chamandas college dreams of joining the elite St. Teresa to rekindle his romance with his childhood sweetheart Mridula aka Mia (Tara Sutaria) who studies there, along with winning the coveted 'Student Of The Year'.

Opportunity knocks his door as he finally gets admission through sports quota. There, his path crosses with that of the bratty Shreya (Ananya Panday) and his snobbish brother Manav (Aditya Seal).

Soon as time passes by, both, hearts and bones are broken. Until we reach the finale where Rohan finally gets to pull off a desi Avenger during a kabbadi match.

soty2

The plot of Student Of The Year 2 is superficial and candy-floss minus any logic. All it's got is a bunch of good-looking people with toned physique, make-up on point and impressive dancing skills.

While the first film at least had some fun bromance between Varun and Siddharth's character, here there's nothing of that sort. The actors who play Tiger's friends end up merely as sidekicks. With a lousy screenplay and repetitive story-telling, Punit Malhotra flunks the test in Student Of The Year 2.

Speaking about the performances, Tiger Shroff dances, fights and does back flips like a dream. As usual, here too, the boy plays his strength and gets away with it. Having said that, it is a tad difficult to imagine him as a college student.

soty3

Ananya Panday looks confident but when it comes to the acting chops, babes, you still have a long way to go! While she sails smoothly as Shreya in the film with the way her character has been penned, it would be interesting to see how she fares from here on.

Tara Sutaria has a good screen-presence, but gets boggled down by some flimsy writing of her role.

Aditya Seal as the film's anti-hero looks a spoilt brat every bit. However once again, the lousy writing does no good.

Every frame in Student Of The Year 2 is shine and prim. The camera never fails to leave a chance to flirt with Tiger's flexing muscles. The girls look picture-perfect all the time.

Student Of The Year 2 falters in the music department. Barring Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Fakira, the other songs barely leave a mark.

In the trailer of the film, Tiger's character is seen saying, "Life agar maidan hain toh usse do hisso mein divide karo, ek mein sapne, doosre mein asliyat...jisse paar wohi karta hai joh bharosa kismat se zyada apni mehnat par kare." Wish the makers had paid heed to their own words.

I thought this actually happens and was real. Ahh thank God, it’s just a prediction. Such trashy films should flop with full nepotism.
