1. Rahul verma(film distributor):

SOTY2 is a trash mindless action ,sorry (so called youth oriented college flick) .@iTIGERSHROFF

should enroll himself in acrobatic instead of films,#TaraSutaria stands out while #AnanyaPanday is cute , story is trash (old routine drama) with good cinematography (2.5 rating)

2.#SOTY2 is almost an exact copy of previous film. It plays on the same lines where fights, affairs, dance, drama, songs, love stories & betrayal clearly take a preceding over the real deal of studying. It will find its audience. #TigerShroff kills it!

2nd half: PAKAA DAALAA! Whatever little was good uptil 1st half got ruined bcoz of absolutely non-sense Kabaddi match which seemed never-ending! Tiger (Rohan Sachdev) rolls, jumps, flips, fights & wins the match inspite of a shoulder ligament tear. LOOOL

3. Dr. Ejaz: Just saw #SOTY2 , time pass movie no way near to part 1. Old story line , bad music and immature acting are highlights. Loose script takes the lead. Technically film was not a dharma movie. 2.5 stars !!! Watch it if u have nothing to do this weekend :)

4. Pradeeep: Kalank - am i the worst movie of this year ??

Student Of the Year 2 - Haha , bas kya bhai

Student of the Year review: Trite and inane, but fun to be had

How far can good looks take you in a film? Watch this to get a fair idea ...

HIGHLIGHTS

Film: Student Of The Year 2
Director: Punit Malhotra
Cast: Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Panday and Aditya Seal
Stars: 2.5 out of 5

Tiger Shroff’s snazzy college drama Student Of The Year 2 is ridiculously trite and inane, but there’s a bit of wicked fun to be had.

Filled with angsty teenagers, exaggerated heartbreaks and petty rivalry, a brawny Shroff plays Rohan, a middle-class underdog who takes on a bunch of wealthy, privileged students from his new college Saint Teresas.

It’s a student campus that seems to be teeming with superrich brats who are given a free rein on campus. They are all sporty with zero competitive spirit and nerds are almost extinct in this gilded universe.

The tropes attached to director and producer Karan Johar’s 2012 Student Of The Year gets a swish update from director Punit Malhotra. The latest SOTY instalment seems to be the rich man’s indulgent version of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Aamir Khan’s iconic 1992 film.

There’s plenty of good-looking people in this unthreatening, slightly soulless drama. While Shroff comes across as a modern day Tarzan with heightened sensitivity and grace of a ballet dancer, salon-perfect Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday make for some charming eye candy.

The first half of SOTY2 is delightfully breezy as we are introduced into Rohan’s world. He’s smitten by his sweetheart Mia (Sutaria) and follows her to her posh college. His world falls apart when he realises that Mia isn’t into him as much as he is into her. You can smell her discontent from a distance, but Rohan is oblivious to it all. He finds happiness in her dreams and she feels suffocated. But that interesting thread of young girls wanting more than relationships isn’t explored and the film trundles down a familiar, overdramatic route.

Rohan’s heartbroken when he realises that the wealthy, popular student Manav — a pleasing debut by actor Aditya Seal — has caught his girlfriend’s fancy. Heartbreak follows, but Rohan’s gut-wrenching pain feel synthetic and superficial. Though this handsome batch are likeable, none of the characters manage to connect with you on a deep level. Plus, the physical prowess of Rohan and Manav — although they are top athletes of their college — seem unreal. They are too ripped to be real. The class divides between the students of a posh school and the middle-class college isn’t given much play either.

Having said that, we have to give full marks to the new batch of SOTY 2 for their collective earnestness. Sutaria and Panday make a good impression in their debuts. They both seem born to romance the camera and have an effortless ease about the way in which they emote. Panday as the mercurial Shreya is sweet, while Sutaria has striking good looks on her side. They are both instantly likeable.

While the first hour is immensely enjoyable, the second half of the film feels laboured. A contest called the Dignity Cup — where students compete in kabaddi and running — is stretched to painful lengths. The ending is painfully predictable and how far can good looks take you in a film? Watch this to get a fair idea.

Student Of The Year 2 Review: A teenage romance that’s a refreshing break in which the leads are a delight!By Lekha Menon on May 10, 2019

Film: Student Of The Year 2

Cast: Ananya Panday, Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria

Director: Punit Malhotra

Rating: 3.5 Moons

When you walk into an archetypal Karan Johar film you know what to expect – a gossamer dream, airbrushed from grim reality, sprinkled with impossibly good-looking people facing first world problems. Most importantly, they are helluva lot of fun to watch. Think Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Dostana and the like that gave birth to a genre of its own. Of course, over the years, his Dharma Productions has moved away from the stereotype, offering a varied range of films that are not just restricted to the lives of the rich and beautiful. However, when you think of wealthy, gorgeous, fun and fluff, let’s admit it, you think of only KJo. That’s because no one does wealth and high-flying designer lifestyle better than Karan. And that’s why you love his films – who doesn’t like good bodies and great fashion?

And following that benchmark comes Student of the Year 2 (SOTY2) – the sequel to his 2012 teen hit that brought the colour and fun of Archie comics to a non-existing Indian campus. But here’s the catch with sequels – they come with their own baggage of expectations. Like it or not, you do tend to compare the second one to the first. SOTY was helmed by Karan himself and that lightness of touch and refinement brought it with many memorable moments. Like the musical interlude with no dialogues at a wedding featuring the three main characters – Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra. The Punit Malhotra-directed SOTY2 lies somewhere between Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Main Hoon Naa and SOTY.

Rohan Sachdeva (Tiger Shroff) is the centre of attraction here. The flying student who hails from the very middle-class sounding Pishorilal Chamandas College (reference to Aamir Khan’s Rajput college in JJWS) jumps, hops, skips and dances his way into the coveted St. Teresa’s college to be close to his childhood love Mia (Tara Sutaria) who is already a student there. As with the first part, there is a class difference in this film too with St. Teresa standing for all things snobbish. The stars of this institution are the sibling pair of Shreya and Manav (Ananya Pandey and Aditya Seal). Rohan does not only have to win his girl back from the rich brat but also win the Student of the Year trophy and lead his team to victory in a sports competition the most important part of which is a kabaddi match. Needless to say, there is a love triangle with Shreya and Mia over Rohan.

What SOTY2 lacks is some of the drama and fun that made up the original. The girls aren’t bitchy enough, the boys aren’t rough enough, the romance isn’t exciting enough and the sporting encounters are not nail-biting enough. In any campus film, the other students need to play an important part. Remember the supporting group narrating the story in SOTY? Here, they are reduced to sidekicks. There is also the mandatory LGBT character but after an introductory scene she disappears from the picture. But the script followed certain checklists. Dance competition? Check. Fight on the sports field? Check. Gay character? Check. Great clothes and make-up? Double check. And so there are quite a few things to like about SOTY2. The treatment is lightweight and easy-breezy. You don’t have high expectations, you won’t get disappointed. After a long spate of heavy historicals and patriotic dramas that have flooded the cinemas, a teenage romance is a refreshing break. The music is pretty foot-tapping, especially the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani remix number.

The leads are quite delightful. Tara Sutaria is a hottie. She has the X-factor and oozes oomph though one wishes her character was more well-defined. Ananya Pandey does well as the poor little rich kid. The sizzle of Alia Bhatt is missing but she seems to have fun with her role. Aditya Seal as the campus dude and the antagonist is predictable. But the one to watch out for is Tiger Shroff who has come a long, long way from his debut film. He looks confident and has got very good screen presence. As always, he plays to his strengths – dance and action – and you can’t get enough of it.

The film is neither a candy floss campus flick with hot chicks and hunky dudes nor a candy floss campus flick with sports and tense moments. Which isn’t such a bad thing as you go to the movies to have a good time and be entertained. And SOTY2 entertains. In Hindi film parlance, it’s a decent time-pass film worth the popcorn. With Hollywood heavy Will Smith thrown in for the ticket price!

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2

What’s Good: There are three special appearances in the film – Alia Bhatt, Will Smith & Common Sense!

What’s Bad: We might see Student Of The Year 3 in which students might compete for the Olympics and Karan Johar will be the torchbearer… (Did you see what I did there?)

Loo Break: If you take one, you could either miss – a needless action sequence by Tiger, an unwanted tantrum by Ananya, nothing by Tara and a song suffering from an existential crisis

Watch or Not?: Even if you’re a Harsh Beniwal fan, watch a montage of his portions edited out of the film. You’ll save yourself some life!

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: What Do We Show To The God Of Bad Movies? #SOTY2

So, the story (hahahaha!) starts with a flashy sequence in which we see Rohan (Tiger Shroff) playing for Student Of The Year 2‘s trophy. Next, we see he’s from a very ordinary Pishorilal Chamandas college and joins the ‘elite’ St. Teresa because his girlfriend Mridula aka Mia is in that college. “You can take out a student of Pishorilal but you can’t take Pishorilal out of a student” Yes, that sounded wrong but that’s what happens with Rohan.

Following his girlfriend to Teresa, he meets Shreya (Ananya Panday) and they come close to each other because they both like to dance. Mia starts disliking Rohan because he’s a ‘bloody gawaar’, and Rohan starts getting attracted to Shreya. Mia realises her she’s wrong, Rohan realises he’s right, Shreya doesn’t realise anything. All of this is backed by people playing Kabbadi, Will Smith doing a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in a song, Samir Soni shouting ‘Gooooood morning’ and a lot of people doing a lot of stupid stuff.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

It seems Arshad Sayed while penning the story of this film, knew this will be high on production value, will get few good looking actors, some tik-tok trending songs and that’s why he didn’t really put any efforts to his working department. There’s not a single aspect to take out of the script because it’s bland. It has nothing to say and it says that nothing badly.

It follows the traditional format of casting beautiful characters, give them no strong content, make sure they are pleasing to your eyes & pain to your a**. The action sequences which weren’t required at all, are smoothly choreographed and might find a place in any of the other Tiger movies. It’s disappointing to see a very entertaining Student Of The Year getting such a second-rate sequel.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Let’s start with the (only) best: Harsh Beniwal – this guy is all set to become the first Youtuber to make it big Bollywood. I went in as a fan & came out as a proud fan. His character deserved more & it could’ve been an epic blend of humour and entertainment.

Tiger Shroff is good when he’s dancing or performing action scenes, but as soon as he starts to act – he reminds you that he still can’t. Continuing the stubble(y) look from Baaghi 2, he definitely looks good with that unmatchable physique; it’s just this isn’t the kind of film for him.

Ananya Panday, the charming relief of the film, tries too hard to make her presence feel. There’s no doubt about her alluring appearance but she needs to prove a lot before gaining any points in the acting department. Tara is sidelined! Her character is written lazily & it just doesn’t justify a glorifying debut. She’s hot but she’s lost; tries to fulfil director’s bleak vision. Aditya Seal is decent but has nothing much to contribute to the film.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Punit Malhotra is back after a sabbatical post a disastrous Gori Tere Pyaar Mein & he has improved. The movie looks fairly rich and so his direction. He avoids abrupt cuts & is aided by picturesque cinematography. All he needed was a good script.

The music album is one of the weakest by Vishal-Shekhar. There isn’t a single song you could take away from the film. They’ve ruined Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Jatt Ludhiyane Da doesn’t click & Hookup Song worsens the final feeling you take from the film.

Student Of The Year 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, I don’t mind cheesy Dharma movies (loved the part 1) but this one is just a needless sequel. They could’ve titled this as ‘Not-A-Student Of The Year’, and still, it would’ve have been equally bad.

One and a half stars!

STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2 MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA

Ronak Kotecha, TNN, Updated: May 10, 2019, 09.26 AM IST

Critic's Rating: 3.0/5

Student Of The Year 2 Story: A small town boy Rohan Sehgal (Tiger Shroff), madly in love with his childhood sweetheart Mridula (Tara Sutaria), follows her to city’s top college. But this new term brings friends, foes and cut throat competition along with heartbreak. Will he bounce back and beat the odds to become the Student of the Year?

Student Of The Year 2 Review: Pretty young things in designer short dresses, dapper dudes with ripping muscles, scorching hot wheels and a colourful campus buzzing with all sorts of extra-curricular activities. Welcome to the class of 2019 at Dehradun’s most upscale college Saint Teresa, where everything and everyone is glossed over. Film’s leading man (Tiger Shroff) fits right into the scheme of things when he secures an admission on a sports quota. But his many talents start becoming a cause of concern for the current poster boy of the college Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal) and his eccentric sister Shreya played by Ananya Panday. This sets the stage for a testosterone led confrontation of male one-upmanship that involves love, ladies and competitiveness. Much of the story revolves around the four main characters, who fall in and out of love without much ado. There’s no heartbreak too deep to shatter them, or a punch strong enough to break them.

A bulk of the burden falls on Tiger Shroff’s strong shoulders and he manages to hit the marquee, when it comes to action. His heroics are captured with skill and attention – whether he is dancing like a dream, running on the tracks (the camera accentuating his muscles and sinew in close ups), playing kabbadi or flipping in the air and landing with a blow. His sharp smoldering looks enhance his starry screen presence even when he is an emotional or a physical wreck.

While film’s leading ladies Tara and Ananya are always glammed up and sport the best designer wear that money can buy, their roles aren’t tailored to perfection. Especially, Tara’s character seems quite flippant in her choices and her performance is underwhelming. Thankfully, for Ananya, her character gets a definite curve and a convincing backstory that works in her favour. Her performance eventually gradually grows on you, especially in some of her meet cute scenes with Tiger. Ditto for the film’s anti-hero Aditya Seal. He plays his part with perfection looking every bit the spoilt brat with class and appeal.

While there was a lot more scope for comedy, some of the best laugh out loud moments come from Tiger’s gang of friends. Among them, Youtuber Harsh Beniwal leaves a lasting impression with his wisecracks and a natural flair for humour.

A lot of drama and action remains out of the classroom, with focus on sports, dance and romance, but the chemistry between Tiger and the two debutantes never really takes off. Even with so many conflicts, competitions and confrontations, the film’s narrative remains light and quite focused on the overall visual appeal that often hampers the seriousness of the story. There is a genuine attempt to infuse filmy drama with a few heavy-duty dialogues by Tiger, but they seem quite out of place in such a frothy flick. Music is quite average, unlike the previous SOTY, where you find the songs like Radha on your playlist even today. The edit could have been crisper.

Overall, this chapter doesn’t have much of that ishq wala love, but there is ample dosti, kabaddi and cool stuff to keep you going. Think of it as a much snazzier version of ‘Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander’ minus the realism.
