FYI The aryan 'Invasion' is the one that is highly disputed, which claims that Europeans migrants(the Aryans) attacked North India and the natives(Dravidians) had to retreat and settle in South India, while some were kept as 'slaves'.

But DNA studies have proven that Most North Indian castes/races are of Aryan(Nordid) descent whose forefathers while probably did not attack the natives in India but did migrate from different parts of Eastern Europe while South Indians are mostly of Austroloid descent. Also colour is just one of the many factors in play. Austroloids are also shorter, fatter lips, curly hair, bigger eyes and wider nostrils. Middle India like Bihar, MP is a mixture of the two races. All that said it's really hard to find a pure Nordid or Austroloid today, maybe in the Northern part of Kashmir.
So while the Aryan Invasion might be untrue, North Indians and South Indians don't share the same ancestry.

The intermingling of races has led to a mixed population and a fairer skin tone in Indian sub continent .
Muslims ruled over India for thousands of years and frankly speaking nobody can actually remember thousands years old family history . Native Indian were always dark skinned

Aryans did not come from Europe, they migrated from western Asia, near the Caspian Sea, Aral Sea regions.
Muslim invasion also led to intermingling of bloodlines and mixed races

Genealogy is strange and unpredictable, even in one family, there can be a whole range of skin tone and features. Some inherit it from ancestors way back, others get it from more recent ancestors

^^Ya in my family the skin tones are really messed up! My mother is very dusky, but my Dad is usually, ESP abroad, mistaken to be Persian. Bit of an extreme & all this fascinates me so I keep trying to find out where did we all come from. It's confusing. A lot of Maharastrian Brahmins are extremely fair-White too.

Can't speak for the rest of the North but the KUMAON region of Uttarakhand was ruled by Hindu dynasties since the very beginning and there was a 4 month period in the 1750s where the Rohilla Leader attacked the region and stayed for only 7 months before they were kicked out. A few months after the said attack another Muslim attack happened on the region but the army was stopped at the gates itself. The Kumoan was never subjugated to the Mughal rulers ever. The region was slowly captured by Brits and was used as their holiday spot and to raise the army which are now known as the Kumauj regiment and the Garhwal Rifles which helped them in the WW.

There is a wide range of genes in any family derived from the ancestral branches on mother's and father's side.
So there is dusky, fair, wheatish and dark complexions in my state, and also facial features vary a lot. There is a lot of Mongolian features in people of North Bengal

Some of my Bengali Brahmin friends have very fair skin with light colored eyes too, all descendants of the Kashi Brahmins
