Pallo: Eberyone in my family is the same. Even when they're pink-White or dusky but with sharp features & good noses. Except a few people who've married Bongs/Gujjus, but on the whole, no. It's super-fascinating isn't it? :)

Hi to you, neighbour!

Genealogy is strange and unpredictable, even in one family, there can be a whole range of skin tone and features. Some inherit it from ancestors way back, others get it from more recent ancestors

Since the invention of the Aryan theory, there have been over 30 different homelands proposed, and still no scholarly consensus till date. 😆 Not to mention a complete lack of hard evidence of any Aryan migration/invasion in the alleged time frame that is generally postulated for a migration/invasion into India.

Everyone of Indian descendant is a mongrel, even the tribals. 😆

This would be interesting to know. I got curious to see if there was some mix in my family as I am the light one among my parents and sister.

You're right, most Indians TODAY are a mixture of various races that immigrated to India in the Bronze ages. But the Aryan immigration is not a myth any more. New DNA studies have proven it as a FACT. Studies have also proved that Native NOrth Indians and Native South Indians are of different racial origins.

"Ancestral North Indians (ANI) and "Ancestral South Indians (ASI) to discover the genetic substructure of the Indian population. The study proved that ANI are "genetically close to Middle Easterners, Central Asians, and Europeans, while the ASI were unique to India. The study also proved that most groups in India today can be approximated as a mixture of these two populations, with the ANI ancestry higher in traditionally upper caste and Indo-European speakers.

The thorniest, most fought-over question in Indian history is slowly but surely getting answered: did Indo-European language speakers, who called themselves Aryans, stream into India sometime around 2,000 BC 1,500 BC when the Indus Valley civilisation came to an end, bringing with them Sanskrit and a distinctive set of cultural practices? Genetic research based on an avalanche of new DNA evidence is making scientists around the world converge on an unambiguous answer: yes, they did.

It's funny how so many Indians want to have some kind of 'foreign' (Read: White/Persian) ancestry but when they actually do DNA tests, they come back more than 95% South Asian. 😆

I also find it funny how people will erase others' ethnic origins to suit their agenda. Like people keep talking about Taimur's Pathan genes while conveniently ignoring his Bengali grandma 'cause it isn't in line with their 'fair & blue eyed Pathan' theory. I wonder how Kareena ignored half of Saif and married him when she reportedly called Bipasha 'kaali billi'.

It's sad when Indians feel beauty comes from being mixed with lighter ethnicities and proudly announce that admixture. Whenever people say South Indians are darker than other Indians, some SIs like to say, 'No, we have many fair people'. As if it's a sin to be dark. South Indians are darker 'cause of the temperature and region in which SIs are concentrated. Darker skin is an advantage in tropical climates that protects you but some people would rather scrub off the colour of their skin.

Wish we could be more proud of what we are blessed with.

^^Bingo. Many people do this but I think when people do have a flood of family members with lighter skin (In S India) they would just like to understand the phenomenon because, yes, they're darker. I don't think all of it comes from a place of rejection, but rather. , curiosity- Everyone is curious to know where they came from & how does it define them. It's one of the most common human curiosities. :)

As for Begum, Begum's Maa in law isn't dark. So Begum must've rejoiced that her Pathan genes will overpower her Bong ones. :P (Sharmila Tagore is good-looking, that's what matters to Begum me thinks)

That article is very misleading, written by a guy called Tony Joseph, with no background in genetics, draws conclusions that even the geneticist who worked on the study that he quotes, does not agree with.

Two critiques of this article.

Chal pagli...subah subah hippo ko rula diya tum ne. lol.

Wonderful post. Before when people use to ask me where you are from (implying of course middle eastern, persian, greek, caucus, mongolia) I use to give all sorts of theories ... these days i just restrict myself to what I know about...which goes from Pakistan back to India. lol

And I dont feel proud associating myself with different races around the world..that implies as if south Asians are less than others. '

There is no respect for such people..those who cannot identify themselves with where ther are from will never gain acceptance from even where they claim they are from.

So I agree with your thought process.

Hippo ji, roiye mat. Aap ke aansun beshumar hai.

Yeah, especially when we're abroad, some South Asians want to be identified as Middle Eastern/Greek/Italian what not. I am like, think local, be global peeps. 😆

@bold- 👍🏼

It's gotten to the point where other ethnicities think it's a compliment to say, 'OMG, you don't look Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Lankan etc!'. 🥱 What kind of a compliment is that?

@MEB- True, it's fascinating to know about people and how diverse we are. People both fascinate and repulse me. 😉

Anyway, these ancestry tests developed abroad are apparently not very conclusive for South Asians since they don't have enough data. If people want to know, there should be something developed here with a focus on South Asian ancestry. I just know we are very susceptible to diabetes.
