But when you start adding a Robin Hood persona to their character because hey under the crimes, they're doing good for the poor people! it's basically asking the audience to develop some sympathy and root for that person. It's especially sickening if the person was portrayed as a saintly saviour but he was out to kill a group based on communal reasons.

Thing is they often have that Robin Hood persona because they themselves rose from sheer poverty.
The most horrible person can also have a good side. Why should the director and writer prevent himself from writing a grey character ?
You'd be surprised by the number of great figures in History that did horrible things or adhered to some ideology that'd be frown upon today.

People in theaters are old enough to know that a fictional character is just that and that they can forge their own opinion by making research on a subject once out of the theater.

I haven't seen the movie and yes I am aware of Dutt biopic coming up, still my 2 cents

If they are painting a criminal white , as NM described, it is wrong. They could have shown him being Hindu hating person by showing some fictional reasons. That way you don't hide the facts and also get away with the negativity.

It would have been right if it was indeed a biopic, but Raees is about a fictional character so the writer wrote him as he pleased.

I haven't watched the movie but till now everyone who watched it said it gives a beautiful message ( i don't know what that is though ) . Aren't majority of gangster movies the same where he/she is portrayed in similar way ...even though i wasn't here at that time but i can still remember large number of similar criticzing posts during OUATIM 1 and 2 in my dreams 😉😆
Besides they already said that its a fictional character , it's people's choice if they want to link it to a real character .

But they've never said it's based on Latif, have they?
And gangster movies are just good to see coz of the larger than life persona. It's for enjoying only.
And Dutt is also equally wrong. He had the arms and ammunition used in other communal attack.

Anyway it's just for watching and then forgetting.

That is how every movie in bollywood is. But ultimately they do show in every movie is that if you choose a bad road you get bad results.
But also people might start having a soft corner for these gangsters which is not right. I already started having one for Raees 😭
