Aamir Khan's Dangal has created history and has become the biggest hit of Bollywood. Aamir Khan is instrumental in making the film what it is today. But did you know Aamir Khan was not the only choice for the role of former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat? Yes, apart from Aamir Khan, Tamil star Kamal Haasan and superstar of Malyalam cinema, Mohanlal too were in the contention. Talking to a leading daily, Divya Rao, the creative producer of UTV Motion Pictures, revealed that Aamir Khan was the first choice for the role but they had Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal too in mind, "...the only other actors who come to mind are Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan." In fact it was Divya's idea to make a film on Phogats, after she came across a newspaper article that read, father who turned cowshed into a wrestling arena for his daughters.' Her idea was loved by the production house and they immediately gave it a go ahead.
After watching Aamir Khan's performance in Dangal, we can't think of any other Bollywood actor who could've pulled it off. But if you go down south Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal were the only one who could've played the character to the applomb but the film wouldn't have had a wide reach like it did with Aamir Khan in the lead. Dangal, which was released on December 23, 2016 has made Rs 370.11 crore so far and is showing no signs of slowing down. And is still doing pretty well at the box office, even in its fourth week. With this Aamir Khan broke his own record of PK, that had made Rs 340 crore approx. at the box office.
