Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2
Cast: Kartik Arya, Nushrat Bharucha, Sonalli Sehgall, Ishita Sharma, Sunny Singh
Director: Luv Ranjan
Rating : 3/5
What's it about:
Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 caters to two types of audiences. Those who have seen the prequel and wondered why it took so long for a follow up and the second who are new to the franchise. I fall in the latter category having watched the follow up as a stand alone film. The plot is basic, it isn't rocket science, neither does it appeal to the grey matter. Three guys Gogo (Kartik Aryan), Sidharth (Sunny Singh) and Thakur (Omkar Kapoor) fall for three different girls Ruchika (Nusrat Bharucha), Surpiya (Sonalli Sehgal) and Kusum (Ishita Rai) who portray the stereotypes that girls have got typecast into. For example, Ruchika is the annoying girlfriend who makes her guy make peace with the fact that he's in a relationship where three is a crowd, or Supriya who refuses to commit to her boyfriend, and Kusum who puts money first without understanding that feelings can also be important. What makes the film watchable and fun is the writing. There are several scenes that stand out because of the witty dialogues or relatable plot line. The guys will love this, while the girls, well they will snigger in protest!
What's hot:
The cast is definitely right. There is an easy camaraderie between Kartik, Sunny and Omkar that makes the trio likeable and interesting. The same holds for the girls. Luv Ranjan manages to create characters than caricatures in a genre that doesn't really demand much attention. But if you go in expecting a few guy jokes, some sexist yet funny one-liners and a good looking ensemble then you won't be disappointed. The cinematography is also worth mentioning, especially the way the songs have been shot. There is a certain freshness to the way Ranjan lights up every frame. Special attention has been paid to make sure the setting looks 2015, be it the mobile phones they use, their clothes or set decor, everything sort of falls in line with the plot. Kartik having done this before is more at ease and relaxed than the other two, but that doesn't take away the charm that Omkar brings to every scene or Sunny's ability to do a serious scene with equal confidence. Among the girls Nusrat has the most exciting character to play and she goes for the kill. Her annoying and bitchy girlfriend who lets her BFF's rule her world is spot on. Very Regina George from Mean Girls! The highlight is the parody on a cigarette smoking infomercial that is played before every movie, the guys just take the hilarity up several notches with this one!
What's not:
Those who have seen the first half might suffer from the 'been there watched that' fatigue. There is very little novelty in terms of figuring out where the story is heading. We sort of know what the climax will be and every character gets predictable post interval. Especially when Ranjan frames linear scenes where we are watching the unravelling of their relationships, it's almost like being on a carousel and knowing when the ride will end. Now lets get to the infamous epic monologue which was the USP of the first! We have all seen it and full marks to Kartik for taking on a three page dialogue, but the impact of the second one sort of fails to live up to the huge expectation. It starts off well, picks up pace, but loses steam and gets caught up in the attempt to 'let's create a record of the longest monologue ever'!. Also, none of the girls really do anything different or spring up a surprise, the bitchy one just stays bitchy, the manipulative and over-obsessive girl decides to play the act till the very end, so there is a definite lack of originality when it comes to judging the material.
What to do:
Yes, it's a guy film about women bashing, but PKP2 has sparks of some brilliant writing, a feel good cast and some hilarious moments that you just can't miss! Watch it with your guy friends to enjoy it the most.

Cast: Kartik Aryan, Omkar Kapoor, Sunny Singh, Nushrat Bharucha, Ishita Raj, Sonnalli Seygall, Sharat Saxena, Mona Ambegaonkar
Director: Luv Ranjan
In Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, co-writer and director Luv Ranjan has essentially remade his own previous film. What's interesting, however, is that it's considerably funnier and slightly less misogynistic than 2011's Pyaar Ka Punchnama. That film gave us a trio of hilarious male protagonists that instantly came off as real and believable. Its female characters, on the other hand, were portrayed as singularly intolerable. The new film makes the same point all over again - that women are often selfish, manipulative, and overbearing, and that they have men wrapped around their little finger - but for the most part, the script employs humor over venom to drive home the message.
The victims, once again, are three best friends and flat-mates in Noida, whose lives are quickly turned upside down and inside out by the women they lose their hearts to. Anshul (Kartik Aryan) is dating bimbo-brained Ruchika (Nushrat Bharucha), whose closeness to her male best friend is driving him crazy. Tarun (Omkar Kapoor) has maxed out his credit cards pampering Kusum (Ishita Raj), but she's unsupportive and selfish when he's plotting a career switch. Chauka (Sunny Singh) is reduced to driver, mechanic, and all round errand-boy of his girlfriend Supriya (Sonnalli Seygall) and her parents, although she can't muster up the courage to tell them she loves him.
Ranjan gets the easy laidback vibe between the boys just right...the ribbing and the riling, the sympathy for each other's situation, the unconditional solidarity when things take a serious turn. The dialogues, often clever, are sharply delivered by the men who, not surprisingly, come off way more likeable than their female counterparts who have the odds permanently stacked against them. Sure most men will find a few scenarios of ball-busting by the women familiar, but Ranjan makes no effort whatsoever to present anything but a skewed perspective.
Having said that I cannot deny that I laughed a lot while watching the film. Ranjan's jokes, as facile as they may be, seldom miss their mark, and the actors are in good form too. Sunny Singh is especially endearing as the forever-whining Chauka, who's embarrassed that he's being relentlessly exploited and manipulated by his girlfriend. Nushrat Bharucha is a real hoot as the annoying, sing-song-voiced Chiku who thinks nothing of going through her boyfriend's emails and throwing a tantrum after spotting old exchanges with his then-girlfriend.
For his sheer energy alone, it's hard not to cheer as Kartik Aryan launches into a 7-minute monologue, in which he basically savages women for the way they treat men. From Kate Winslet's selfishness at not sharing that plank of wood with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, to complaining that men aren't even allowed any quiet time while on the toilet seat or even after sex, that unforgiving diatribe pulls out all stops in the film's female-bashing agenda.
It's in the last act that the film throws away any pretence of humor and adopts an especially spiteful tone that's reminiscent of the earlier film. Until this point the jokes were consistently funny and the stereotyping seldom mean-spirited. I expect, nevertheless, that many people will find Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 very enjoyable. I did too, a lot of it. I laughed guiltily at so many jokes.
For that, I'm going with three out of five. Someday we'll get a smart film on the battle of the sexes. Until then, perhaps cheap laughs will have to do..?

Comedy film "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" has opened in theatres with good occupancy.
The low budget film has surprised trade analysts with its morning and afternoon shows occupancy figures of about 20 to 25%. The comedy film is a sequel to the 2011 film "Pyaar Ka Punchnama".
"Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" started well in North circuits, especially in Delhi-National Capital Region, and it expected to excel in that region.
"Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" can have an opening of Rs 6+ crore at the domestic box office, if the occupancy remains strong in the evening and night shows. The opening day occupancy of the film is better than "Bombay Velvet", "Piku" and "Katti Batti" in several circuits.
The good opening will ensure that the film will have a good opening weekend as well.
