Rumours of Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s film Abir Gulal releasing in India on September 26 have been denied by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The government body issued a clarification on social media stating that no approval has been given for the film’s release in Indian theatres.

The film, which stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan opposite Vaani Kapoor, opened internationally on September 12. However, it skipped an Indian release after tensions escalated in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. The presence of a Pakistani actor in the lead further complicated the matter.

Amid uncertainty, some media reports suggested that the makers were preparing for a September 26 release in India. PIB responded firmly, writing, “It is being claimed by several media outlets that the film Abir Gulal starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor will release in Indian cinemas on September 26, 2025. #PIBFactCheck. This claim is FAKE. No such clearance has been granted for this film.”

Confusion Over Distribution

A report in Bollywood Hungama had earlier quoted a source close to the production banner Indian Stories Limited (UK). The insider had claimed, “Abir Gulal has released today, that is, September 12, across the globe. The team of Indian Stories Limited (UK) have now made the decision to release the film in cinemas in India two weeks from now, on September 26. They are confident of the product and feel that the film, which is a simple and sweet love story, has the potential to attract the audience everywhere, including India. Moreover, no other film is scheduled for a release on September 26 and hence, Abir Gulal will enjoy a solo release in the country.”

Backlash Over Fawad Khan’s Remarks

While some fans expressed excitement over Fawad’s return to cinema, political and social opposition remains strong. Earlier this year, Fawad condemned the Pahalgam terror attack but later described India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor as a “shameful attack.” His remarks drew sharp criticism online, raising doubts about whether Indian distributors would risk controversy by supporting the release.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulal tells a story of love, betrayal, and reconciliation across borders. Produced by Indian Stories and A Richer Lens Entertainment, the film is backed by Vivek Agrawal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy.

For now, the film’s India release remains uncertain, with PIB’s clarification leaving little scope for immediate plans.
