MOVIE REVIEW- Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2: Packs a punch, if you can ignore the misses

Fri, Oct 16, 2015

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2

Director: Luv Renjen

Actors: Omkar Kapoor, Sunny Singh Nijjar, Kartik Aaryan

Rating: 3/5

This dick pic' (as against a chick flick) is what you would quintessentially call a laundon wali' film. I use laundon' here after much mulling because no other word more aptly describes true-blue Delhi boys, even in their self-perception.

Just to give you further sense of the bro-code, these are guys who quite often refer to themselves as bhai' in third person, especially when bragging, "Dekh, aaj tere bhai ne kya kamaal kiya hai!" And everyone else is bro' or bhai' as well, "Dekh, bhai. Bhai nahin hai kya?"

They are usually very good-looking, well-built, well-dressed North Indian men, often driving expensive wheels at night. But they're most comfortable in male company. The female form usually messes with their Zen. Gradually they begin to view the world as an unfair divide between silly, bitchy, yappy girls who have their way, and weak men, like them, who chase them still.

If you haven't met any of these good fellas before, this film is a great place to strike a quick acquaintanceship. The writer-director of this movie, I notice, is called Luv, named after the son of Ram, rather than English for pyar, ishq and mohabbat, for sure. The level of catharsis here is so strong that love and relationships might turn you off for good if you believe any of the things the guys in this movie are going through.

The only sense you get is that they've been nurturing grudges their whole life for a day when they can take their complete bhadaas' out through a script, or a film. Which is great. At least it's self-expression.

The three boys here, almost at the same time, begin to date three really hot women. The seriousness begins soon after the seduction is over. Along the way we explore various thorns in the rose-stem. And some of them are such recognisable urban themes: the idea of the girl's best boyfriend, who she's given her heart to, and the girlfriends who rule her head; the uncomfortable concept of whether or not you split the bill at the bar or restaurant; and technology, more so (SMS, Whatsapp etc.) that can enhance and destroy the best of relationships.

Is this a hugely original movie? About a bunch of guys, in their mid-20s, sharing a bachelor pad, in Delhi? It's almost a template. Pyar Ka Punchnama (2011) though developed a cult of its own, which explains this second part.

That one had a really fine actor (Divyendu Sharma), who I thought was being terribly let down by others in the cast. One of whom, Kartik Aaryan"who's been repeated in this sequel"got to deliver a heartfelt monologue on women and relationships that struck a chord with the frustrated young. It went viral on YouTube. He delivers a similarly long monologue in this picture as well. The co-actors this time however (Omkar Kapoor, Sunny Singh Nijjar) seem far more sorted.

Pyar Ka Punchnama, I felt, was wonderfully suited for a TV show, along the lines of Friends, How I Met Your Mother etc. There was nothing on Indian TV to benchmark it against. Here's what's changed only over the past four years.

If you shred this film of its general Bollywoodgiri: random frills, pointless item songs, locations that look so totally fake, and women who act like they're only posing for the camera, this would make for a fabulous web series. And God knows I mean that as a compliment.

You only have to see some of the local work happening on the Internet (TVF's Pitchers, YRF's Man's World etc.) to know what I'm talking about. Like this film, they're fun, relatable, and so well written.

Is this also misogynistic? Hell yeah. But it's comedy. So as a woman (or a man) if you're deeply offended, I'm sorry the joke's really on you. All I can see from this seat is a handsome wide-eyed launda in Delhi, sitting in a small group with his legs up, looking at the screen, going, "Bhai, baat dil se kahi hai. Chhoo gayi!"

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 Movie Review

Here is a saying about bollywood sequels. How much ever a treat the prequel might have been, the sequels rarely suceed. But, putting an end to this myth, 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2' gives us a reason to be happy and gay after a very long time. PKP 2 is as much a laugh riot as its prequel. Here is how its story goes...

The film kicks start with three good friends, Anshul aka Gogo (Kartik Aaryan), Siddharth aka Chauka (Sunny Singh Nijjar) and Tarun aka Thakur (Omkar Kapoor). Being the highest earner of all three, Tarun is the source of income for the rest two. The three have the time of their lives with their motto of working hard and partying even harder. Everything is as normal, unless three girls enter their respective lives. Anshul falls for Cheeku aka Ruchika Khanna (Nushrat Bharucha), Siddharth for Supriya (Sonalli Sehgall) and Tarun for Kusum (Ishita Sharma). The couples enjoy each other's company, until Kusun, who is also money conscious, starts having a problem with Tarun spending his hard-earned money on his friends. Problems start persisting between each couple with Anshul becoming Cheeku's servant cum boyfriend, driving her and carrying her shopping bags, Siddharth becoming Kusum's money machine and Tarun becoming a domestic help for Supriya's parents. After this goes on for long, the three boys realize that they are stuck in wrong relationships and try hard to get out of it. Will the trio be able to be free again and how will the girls gain their respective man's trust back? Forms the rest of the film.

Speaking of performances; all six actors are confident and amusing in their own unique ways, with the boys being the highlight of the film. Kartik's dialogue delivery, Sunny's comic timing and Tarun's confidence proves as a plus for the film. Kartik and Nushrat's chemistry is rocking. Coming to the story, the plot is similar to that of its prequel, with the protagonists falling in love, enjoying the relationship for a while and then facing its outburst. The screenplay is kept simple and anyone who has ever been in love can easily relate to the film in every way. Kartik's monologue, in the sequel too is a laugh riot. The dialogues, especially the one-liners are witty.

While the first half of the film is awesome in every way, with some amazingly funny dialogues and scenes, the second half becomes tedious to some extent. The plot and the characters start going haywire after the interval, but the movie gets back on track by the climax. The songs of the film are fine and fit well with the plot. All the numbers are placed perfectly in the screenplay. The cinematography is sharp and so is the editing.

In all, 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2' provides a fresh take on relationships and its outcomes. Even though it speaks from the male perspective, the film is worth a watch for its amazing performances and comic sections.

Movie Review: Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2

Boys will be boys. They will chase girls, swear by their boy friends and do everything possible to be duped by their pheromone driven instincts. In their ideal world, women are the gift of eden and the work of the devil. And their conundrums are just natural, unavoidable and totally justified repercussions of nature. That's the world Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is set in. A world where the locations are exotic, the girls are pretty but they're also conniving bitches. Happy ranting and situational comedy. This film, with it's misogyny tucked firmly in cheek, makes good fun with bumbling boys.

It's a no holds barred look at relationships and women from the skewered perspective of bichare boys. So you have Anshul (Karthik Aryan), Thakur (Omkar Kapoor) and Sid (Sunny Singh) playing quintessential Delhi boys with raging hormones. They're men with decent paying jobs, but when it comes to their personal pursuits in life, all they can think of or converse about are girls. This is the weakest part of the film. The setup is remarkably dull to the point where the first 30 minutes or so feel like a drag. Each boy meets a girl and pataos them under different circumstances. And that's when the story kicks in. And that's where PKP2 picks up speed. Each boy discovers that having a girlfriend is a lot more complex than what they'd pictured in their thoughts. The girls from the first Pyaar Ka Punchnama return, Nushrat Bharucha plays Chiku, Ishita Sharma plays Kusum and Sonalli Seygall plays Supriya.

While all three girls have distinct and interesting personalities, they never quite progress further from being the problem in the guys' lives. The female characters don't get their back stories. Any purist feminists out there will hate PKP2 for making such quick meal out of its women. But that does not hamper the story telling. In fact, having the girls in single dimensional characters allows the boys' emotions to take centre stage. And the film builds some great ideas on the lines of troubled boyfriends. Writers Rahul Mody, Tarun Jain and Luv Ranjan have done a great job at recreating contemporary relationships. This is a sure shot trip down memory lane for millions of guys out there. This is how we all grew up, around that big bad world of girls and love.

There are some great moments in PKP2. The set piece where the boys take off on the Smoking Kills films shown in theatres before film screenings is hilarious. Karthik Aryan's monologue is just phenomenal. Almost all of Sunny Singh's character's story is brilliant. There are more than a dozen laugh out loud moments. The film even manages to hold you through its serious patches. The treatment, the mood and the visuals are all a delight to watch.

The highlights are the performances by Nushrat Bharucha, Sunny Singh and Karthik Aryan, in that order. Nushrat plays a rich Delhi girl who's got more in the bank than her head. Her life's pursuits are girl friends, shopping, clubbing and boys. Nushrat lends a sense of conviction and resolve to a frivolous character. She's definitely an acting talent to exploit for the future. Sunny Singh is a real find too. His character starts off slow. But along the way the young actor shows signs of serious acting talent. He knows where to employ underplay and he knows how to keep things real. Karthik Aryan deserves a standing applause for his monologue. It is an inspired moment of lunacy. It's a rant that goes on and on about girls being the source of every problem in the world and boy is it fun. You just sit there and soak up Karthik's energy. Ishita and Sonalli are adequate in their performances. Omkar Kapoor looks like he's got a Zac Efron hang over. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

PKP2 is definitely worth a watch. The misogyny is present, but it stays in the under current. The story is just fantastic. The film is not just relevant to our times, it is a straight laced portrayal of our lives. The frivolity of modern relationships and the ease with which people deceive themselves are all presented with the right dash of humour. This one is definitely an upgrade on its original. And a very good film for youngsters.
