Raja Hindustani released around Diwali in 1996. Huge advantage of festive release. Yes that year comparatively competition was less, especially Aamir's immediatew rivals did not have that much success as solo heroes.
But Sunny Deol's Ghatak did release near same time as Raja Hindustani. It was successful too. And Sunny had already had one huge hit in Jeet that year. How come Ghatak did not dent Raja Hindustani's business? It is amazing RH has more footfalls than DDLJ!
And this film ran in theatres for around a year!! It is not possible that it could have slowed down later. It is one of top ten longest running films in history of Bollywood.
Surprise of surprises is that Maharashtra Govt had also declared it tax free after it completed Golden Jubilee!
IIRC there was a strike of theater owners in MUmbai when Raja Hindustani released. It overcame that strike to become ATBB
Raja Hindustani clicked because house wives simply loved this movie IMO. If you can get house wives into theaters movie is going to turn out to be ATBB...
Now this was just my observation based on crowd near a single theater near my house...I don't have any link to prove it but i could see families going to watch this movie in theaters. Cars parked on the side of the road was a good indication.
