Raja Hindustani released around Diwali in 1996. Huge advantage of festive release. Yes that year comparatively competition was less, especially Aamir's immediatew rivals did not have that much success as solo heroes.

But Sunny Deol's Ghatak did release near same time as Raja Hindustani. It was successful too. And Sunny had already had one huge hit in Jeet that year. How come Ghatak did not dent Raja Hindustani's business? It is amazing RH has more footfalls than DDLJ!
And this film ran in theatres for around a year!! It is not possible that it could have slowed down later. It is one of top ten longest running films in history of Bollywood.

Surprise of surprises is that Maharashtra Govt had also declared it tax free after it completed Golden Jubilee!

IIRC there was a strike of theater owners in MUmbai when Raja Hindustani released. It overcame that strike to become ATBB

Raja Hindustani clicked because house wives simply loved this movie IMO. If you can get house wives into theaters movie is going to turn out to be ATBB...

Now this was just my observation based on crowd near a single theater near my house...I don't have any link to prove it but i could see families going to watch this movie in theaters. Cars parked on the side of the road was a good indication.

It worked for several reasons...
First was the beautiful music ...
Then it was the kiss that sealed the fate...😆
And third and most important was that it played perfectly to the Desi mentality...We are talking about the early 90's ...People were not so forward in their thinking then...It was a love story...where the girl gives up her father's wealth for the man she loved...the man earns...the woman cooks cleans and loves him...He turns out to be a khuddaar damad...not taking a single penny from his rich in-laws...they have a baby...they meet in the end and all problems go bye bye...
When was the last time that a sensible and logical movie worked in India...most of the times ..its movies like this...that work...The reason why movies like Lamhe and Arth didn't work despite being brilliant movies...is the unusual scenarios in the movie...people do not accept those kinds of movies easily...
Maybe if today this movie is released it would fare average...but so would many other movies that were BB or ATBB at that time...The thinking of the people changes with time...that's why Lamhe works now...but didn't work then...

I don't remember much of the movie except that it was really dramatic. 😆

The music was extremely popular though... my parents still love that Aaye Ho Mere Zindagi Mein Tum Bahar Banke song.

Wow! Really? This is a surprise!

I didn't know this fact about this film.

The film had some appeal then! But how?

What was there for housewives to like this? Raja is far from an ideal man! And Aarti is naive, immature, listening to wrong people throughout except the end.

Or is it possible that they could relate with Raja's overdose of ego, short temper and Aarti's naivete and inability to balance relationships? Their flaws reminded them of their real life challenges?
