I guess Don12 i highlighting towards the point that Every MARITAL RELATIONSHIP has problems, you are pointing some points from Raja & Some from Aarti's characters, now u r ignoring this that this kind of problems are common in every love marriage. So Housewives connecting to it was common, mostly the ones who were in love marriage not arrange.

It worked because 90s was filled with dhoom dhadaka action. Has everyone forgotten all the Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar action films that came in hoards in the mid 90s? I'm serious, Rakshak, Salakhein, Krishna, Khiladi films, Zor, Ziddi, Bhai, Mohra, Sapoot, Tarazu etc came one after another then. So after DDLJ, Raja Hindustani was the only big romantic drama that came out with popular actors. No wonder DDLJ and Raja Hindustani filled the void and did well. People were dying for a romantic drama with popular actors, they got it in the form of DDLJ, Raja Hindustani, Pardes, Dil toh Pagal Hain.

- I know about music. But there were many films which had great music but did not reach ATBB status.

- I do not think 1996 can be called early 90s! It's past mid-90s. We can't call Indian society that backward in that era.

- I don't think the girl left it all. We know she also came back home, no? She gave birth to her child also at her natal home only.
The only traditional value in it seems to be that the girl decided to keep the child of the man who'd drifted apart from her and both of them did not divorce each other despite differences. She kept keeping Karwa Chauth fasts for her husband even at her natal home.

Maybe this loyalty could've clicked. I kind of agree.

- The kiss? It must've made front benchers crazy but didn't it repel family audience? We had people changing the channel the moment this scene came when the film was shown on cable back then.

- The couple that's supposed to be so madly in love with each other does not trust each other and both give in to instigation by Aarti's step mother, ruining their married life. What love is this?
I personally felt angry at both of them believing others' lies instead of talking things themselves.

But maybe this loud stuff was like a soap onscreen for audience then. Condensed version of TRP toppers we have since 2000?

That is another big misconception... That Smooch not kiss are not only for Front benchers, everyone enjoyed it, phir chaahe akele mein woh scene dekha ho, but that smooch so long had attraction from everyone. Front Benchers are easy to stereotype, while rest are safe.

I didnt know its ATBB. That means its as big as films like HAHK, DDLJ. No one remembers the film as fondly as people remember the former two films.

I am not saying Raja Hindustani should have flopped. I just said what was so special about it that it became ATBB.

I disagree with the Sholay example. It is still popular and sweeps all polls of best film ever. Raja Hindustani on the other hand never even figures in any list or poll of even good films let alone best ones. These two films have no comparison.

Also every old film is not worth trashing. Some of the Khans' best work is from 90s only - still stands test of time. This topic wasn't meant to pick out an old film and start trashing it. I only wanted to discuss and learn how it got the stupendous success despite having flaws and having aged poorly compared to other films of its lead actors done in the same era. I hope I am clear on this.

That's because of Aamir's Perfection in making his film as big as stature of HAHK or DDLJ very later in his career around 2010...With Gajini & 3 Idiots... No one remember RH his 1st ATBB, but everyone knows 3 Idiots "Rancho".

Plus RH is not as big in Overseas as HAHK or DDLJ were, this might also be the reason.

I think 1996 was kind of a weak year for Bollywood

It had very few hits like jeet or judwaa or Ghatak or Saajan chale sasural

So when RH came they all went to see it 😉

Srk had no hit that year

Infact the years Srk has no hits seems like " weak years "

1996

1999

2005

2009

All kind off odds years

Yeah I read HAHK and DDLJ made over 5 million each

RH overseas was like 750,000 pathetic even for 1996

But the par desi song was popular
