But HAHK and DDLJ are happy films and had great production values. I thought this is why they succeeded (otherwise HAHK does not have much of a story).

Raja Hindustani on other hand is kind of sad, with all the frustrations and misunderstandings its characters go through. It is comparatively regressive in its values too.

Lovers in HAHK and DDLJ shared good understanding even before marriage while in this one they are quick to doubt each other only because someone filled their ears! I don't understand why would anyone believe a step mother than talk to each other and get info from each other firsthand!

In Pyar Jhukta Nahin, at least the heroine's parents are her biological parents so it seems understandable why she got influenced by whatever they said.

Here I don't know why Aarti believed her step mom knowing how kamini and rude to her she was! Why no trust on the man she loved and was ready to give up everything for?

Raja is not really a dream man kind of character - I mean he's good looking, passionate, innocent and caring but he also has a huge ego. I can't draw parallels betwen HAHK, DDLJ and this one.
He loved Aarti so much but why no trust?
I wonder if he'd have returned to her had she not given birth to his child!
Why didn't he listen to his chacha and chachi whenever they tried to drive sense into him and reconcile with his wife?

Suresh Oberoi was so foolish that he didn't realise what the hell was going on? His character kept getting manipulated by his second wife and her brother in this film? He had no concern about his daughter's home breaking apart? It took him so long to use his brain?
At least Raja's chacha-chachi were more sensible!

The music was of course super duper successful and I loved it too. I remember its cassette always played in our car even till 1999.

But even films like QSQT, Rangeela, JJWS, Aashiqui, DTPH, Pardes, Border, HDDCS etc. had great plus successful music but they were not All Time Blockbusters.

Can music make this much of a difference in a film's success? I find it hard to believe. It does make a difference but it can make a film ATBB?

How did it bag awards? Simply due to box office?

I just wanted to get an idea of reasons it got this stupendous success. According to BOI it had more footfalls than DDLJ. That means something!

Its quality (overall, everything considered) and success are sort of inversely proportional to each other I feel.

HAHK and DDLJ are like a dream. Raja Hindustani is one harsh reality check - with lovers facing a rocky marriage.

The time on which RH would have landed in halls, it would have been SOLO Release, immense + WOM would have ensure Rocking 1st week. I think in coming weeks also there was no competition for this film which helped a smooth business ride.

So after the final collection, The Distributor share might have been up to the standard of acquiring ATBB Status.

Even if later on ppl find it hell boring, till that time it would have easily crossed all the barometers to achieve that title.

@Mr KaminA

Raja Hindustani released around Diwali in 1996. Huge advantage of festive release. Yes that year comparatively competition was less, especially Aamir's immediatew rivals did not have that much success as solo heroes.

But Sunny Deol's Ghatak did release near same time as Raja Hindustani. It was successful too. And Sunny had already had one huge hit in Jeet that year. How come Ghatak did not dent Raja Hindustani's business? It is amazing RH has more footfalls than DDLJ!
And this film ran in theatres for around a year!! It is not possible that it could have slowed down later. It is one of top ten longest running films in history of Bollywood.

Surprise of surprises is that Maharashtra Govt had also declared it tax free after it completed Golden Jubilee!

By the time any next coming movie makes dent in running movie's business, it is sometime too late, i guess that will be the case... as u said Diwali Release, so i won't be surprised if it had the BUMPER HOLIDAYS Advantage... so from that to coming Sunday, it would have done rocking business... This i am sure all the game of ATBB is through Distributor share, so if by any means this film crossed that mark... share had played a vital role...

May be it was sold on low price... recovery more... so ATBB Mark.

That makes sense. Pehle aisa on-topic reply de dete toh kya jaata? You're always after me, trying to make assumptions about my "motive" behind writing whatever I write!

It had more footfalls than DDLJ? 😲

RH is a terrible film...no two ways about it. Completely regressive, silly, with some serious hamming. The characters are idiotic and you don't feel anything for them at all. The only good thing was the songs.

In promos though it showed the same family type that HAHK and DDLJ did
Like there was an audience for these movies that needed satisfying and they glued to RH
