Because that is what Sharmila was addressing in this entire article.
That is...IF anyone bothered to read it.

Curious to know though how any of these comments tie into sexism.

Well this topic is on sexism in the industry, that's why I asked.
It's sad.
A woman stands up and gives her thoughts on the topic. Its a good topic. Whether you agree or disagree, its a good topic. But no one pays attention to that.
One insignificant example is made to be the central focus, everyone just misses her point entirely.
You can disagree with her example, but at least address her topic.

Why is it that this forum just wants to find something to mock about everyone? Every single celebrity.
It's annoying. People specifically look to find something to mock.
I'm confident that if an intelligent thought provoking argument gets twisted, nothing stands a chance.

It's also just the people really. I think its human nature.
The same thing happened to Shahrukh. He made a strong statement which was isolated OUT OF CONTEXT and used against him till he gave up and left social media.
THIS is the problem.

I look through the topic to find comments ON the topic. People who either agree or disagree, but ON THE TOPIC. And I find like 3 people outta all these pages who talk about it. Guess Who was one of em. Though he disagreed with the woman, he talked about the topic.

The rest are too busy bashing her son's achievements. Or her daughter in law's work.

How wonderfully Sharmila addresses the entire topic.
Balanced. With sensitivity.

"A woman is free to say yes or no to the way she's projected on the screen," says actress Sharmila Tagore adding that if a woman enjoys doing a certain thing on screen, "it's her prerogative".

And balances the other side of the spectrum here, where she COULD be objectified.

"But we don't know what the compulsions are for what girls do on screen. Sometimes they're too young and naive to know where the camera is placed and how they're captured,"

And completely agree with her here. I mean if you start thinking about it, women are glamorous in all kinds of dance sequences. They can be sensual, they can have cameras focusing on certain areas like her waist, etc.

"But women can be commodified even in a wedding sequence. And why single out women? Even men are being commodified. And women are commodified in endorsements and advertisements even when they are clothed from head-to-toe.

Another balanced statement.

Its not like these actresses themselves getup and decided that I want this song to look like this. Its the way these songs have been made for years.

The 68-year-old said: "The women are not volunteering to do these songs. They are an indication of the patriarchal construction. If an actress says yes to an item song, she doesn't become unworthy of respect."

And mostly agree with this statement.

"I think we have to forget this 'man can do anything and women cannot' mindset. If a woman enjoys doing a certain thing on screen, it's her prerogative. You don't have to go and see her. Why be judgmental about it?

"Men do a lot of vulgar dances. I recall some of Govinda's dance movements. But they were not condemned at all. But if a woman does it, she is looked down upon. This is double standards. Why do we expect women's morals to be on higher plane than the men?"

Lol I don't how old she 86 or something but she is so hott a milf and I agree with her .

Men/women should be judged equally but I doubt it will happen anytime soon

I just think her son is a snob and her DIL is an airhead princess

I still like them . Hell I love Salman but I know the guy is school yard bully 😉

The perpetrators were the proverbial 'Rickshaw' crowd (no offense to decent Rickshaw drivers) - uneducated, uncouth, boorish, completely patriarchal, chauvinistic, and considering women just playthings.

Since Govinda, Salman Khan's 'Dabangg', Rowdy Rathore etc. appear to make more of an impression on that crowd, they take those ideas home and implement them in their lives... to the everlasting misfortune of the victims around them.

That is not to say educated masses are not impressionable, as well... plenty of MPs/MLAs sons come to mind... but there too, its a lot of influence of home environment, power plays, patriarchal attitudes that are passed on generation to generation, etc.

So, as a whole, unless education is stressed, and strong laws are passed, and ENFORCED, this problem will remain endemic.

No No..I am not going on the Delhi Rape Case at all...That is altogether different debate!
I just picked on the quote that said Govinda was never condemned..as if only karishma (who was his heroine in most of his movies during his peak team) was condemned..which was NOT the case. Govinda was looked down upon even more than karishma was in terms of being classy! so the example is wrong.
Also as desigal said..that we shud STICK to the topic even if example is wrong..going by that logic...I completely dont agree with sharmila there also..there r women in cinema who have not compromised on many levels n still made a name for themselves...from mainstream as well as arty...
n ok ...if a newcomer does an item song or a vulgar song..i can understand that she is naive n cant command much ...but what abt established A-listers dyinggg to do these numbrs...the fact is Fevicol song is INDEED cheap n no one can justify that to me by quoting govinda or watever or quoting history of bebos filmography etc!! she shud simply stop defending her DIL indirectly or directly n learn to call a spade a spade!
a woman shud b independent to make her choices as much men do...but in case as an audience i m not interested in watching it on primtime TV..pls dont shove it in my face by airing it every few mins n telling me Its Female Liberalisation..coz for me thats SO NOT female liberilisation...thats much more a commodification of women ...it caters to the male audience...i dont see anything liberating abt that !!🤢
