Have to agree, the general opinion of the westerners about India is limited to slums, the cows on the dirty roads, poor slum people etc. and SDM didn't help that either. It was showing the reality yes, but why only this part of reality. There's another whole different reality that exists but no one ever shows that, a lot of the documentaries, films etc, on India, they all show the "bad" side of India and only a minority know the real deal-there's good and bad like every other country.

LOL really???

What is the other part of reality of india? karan johar movie life styles? everyone wearing gucci, prada, louis vuitton, d&g clothes, luxurious cars. India full of gorgeous locations like they show in movies? basically india is a glamourous place.

I am sorry but SDM for the first time show cased the reality of India. India is no glamourous place as shown in kjo movies etc.

I am not talking about what is shown in KJo movies. But yes there is more to India than just slums, poor people and all this shizz they show in these movies, believe it or not. India may not be glamorous but it does not just end at what is shown in SDM and many other movies and that's what others don't know. When I moved to where I live now, the questions many girls in my class asked (given we were only 11/12 back then) showed that they think all of India is like what is shown in these movies, documentaries etc., they do not realise there's another side to India too. Yeah it show cased the reality (and exaggerated it at points) but every movie just showcases that and leads others to believe that everyone and everything in India is like that It is extremely heart breaking that many people in India DO live like that I'm not denying it, but all I was saying was that India has more to it than just that. As I said, every country has it but it is hidden unless someone sees it for themselves. I saw some extremely filthy and slum like places in Australia where I was there a few months ago but is that ever shown? Will that ever be shown? No. And that's what I was talking about.

I get what you mean.

But India is one of those countries which has biggest amount of poor people and it's part of the history of india and that's a fact but it is never shown in a big bollywood movie.

I find it annoying how 1 movie(SDM) showed the reality and everyone is attacking it and bashing it several celebrities did so. But on the other hand when million of bollywood movies is made showing india as a glamourous and paradise place then no one objects at all.

It would be great if non-fiction and fiction could be balanced out. Today there is 90% fiction movie while around 10% has reality in movies.

Of course every country have their bad part, but they do show them in their movies.

Even Hollywood has shown their slums not only on tv shows but also in their movies. Which not many people watch. Since I watch lots of American tv shows and their movies so I know they do show them.

Oscar only gives importance to those movies which has equal amount of fiction mixed with reality.

I agree that it is but movies showing abundance of this and not even a glimpse of the other side kind of makes me angry. May be because I am sick of people asking (and sometimes just assuming) that that's what India is all about and, bah, it's hard to explain. And it sucks when people misuse that to downgrade India.

I have no problem as such with SDM, it's great movie but my issue is what I have already explained/

If balance existed this world would be a better place but unfortunately it doesn't.

And Amitabh should be the last person to bash Slumdog Millionaire.

He is being delusional when he is refusing to accept that india is facing poverty etc.

If it was in his hands to do a hollywood movie about India then he would have showed every grandfather/father-in-law/father as sexy sam. Children he would show as persons who are born with a silver spoon in their mouths and can choose to be what ever they want. Women as mis worlds. Everyone having a bungalow, several cars etc. That would have been a reflect of contemporary india according to mr. bachchan🤪.

I never denied that they don't, them showing it wasn't the point being discussed. But they would never let India show that whereas India happily lets others show what is being shown. Iit's actually not even entirely about showing,it's a part of reality of India but allowing it to be exaggerated even further (and sometimes being mocked at) by the world is what I don't like. It's not like by showing it anything will improve for the people who suffer. It's only entertainment for the west at the end of the day.

I grew up in Bombay, and barring the unrealistic romance and luck elements – Slumdog Millonaire was a very authentic portrayal of slums like Dharavi. India is a vast country, with such diversity that you simply cannot capture the essence of India in one single movie. All a movie can do is capture the essence of one place, sub culture or community and I think Slumdog Millionaire did that in a good way. It also didn't treat slums or slum dwellers as a vile cancer on society like many Indians actually view them – but was more poignant and positive.

The people who criticized the movie have a misplaced sense of patriotism. They only want to show off our history, our culture and gloat , but are at the same time ashamed and embarrassed about outsiders seeing the darker sides – like homelessness, crime, poverty. They themselves turn a blind eye to it and bash outsiders who dare peek into side of India we don't promote.

The Brazilians don't seem to have such embarrassment over their poverty and problems – An outsider didn't have to come and make it – they themselves made City of God.

That being said I do think Slumdog was overrated as a movie. I found Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to be a lot more delightful and fun.

RTH Bingo.

I mean people complain SDM only showed slums and bad things but that is the burning problem of India is it not? And then there are movies like PST, which will never be encouraged.
And there has been nice movies like city of joy, brick lane too, but people do not know about them because they were not made on big budgest. these movies were also made by people outside India, showcasing the beauty of India and south Asian countries.

Aa for hollywood, countless movies have been made on drug, illegal immegrant, drug trafficking in US, mexico by those people only. Some of them were good, some bad. So no, showing poverty is not a short cut to win oscar.
I found the best exotic marigold hotel a really amazing movie. right balance of old and new India, old and new UK, real problems, real life. The movie was however not much famous.
I adored dev and tina in that movie.
