SPECIAL 26 Review: Thrill is the Word

A Wednesday was the first Indian film I believe I watched in India and without English subtitles. I still remember a friend translating for me the parts I did not fully understand and feeling how the plot was getting entangled and detangled in my brain. Such a stimulating film had me looking forward to acclaimed director Neeraj Pandey's Special 26 (aka Special Chabbis) and I am glad the waiting is over.

While the director might have been facing nervousness this week before the release, one has to say that a trip to the cinema this weekend to watch it is pretty well worth it!

Special 26 is a film that takes up the true story of an "army" of conmen and makes us enter their universe and that of the officers who wish to capture them. The con artists are known for having carried out fake raids against the corrupt rich and famous in the 1980s, where they skillfully collected the willing victims' black money by posing as income tax or CBI officers. These activities culminated with a famous scam raid they conducted at the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri jewelers.

I have to confess that one of the reasons I was also awaiting this movie is because it finally looked like Akshay Kumar was dropping the triple "Masala / Martial arts / Sexist comedy star" label he had been linked to in recent times and was ready to give acting a run for its money.

I am happy to say I am not disappointed! (Add a hip hip hurrah to this). Akshay Kumar gives one of his most honest and proficient performances in this film without relying purely on his physique or his star status. He delivers his character as a sleek, sharp, subtle and charming thief. How can a character like this one not have layers? A big thumbs up to Akshay for having said a big "YES" to Neeraj Pandey this time.

And a big bravo to Pandey and his team for duly casting his film and paying such attention to detail. Every frame seems to be taken from a time machine ride into the 1980s and each actor brings his/her talent to the script. The same attention to detail may not be 100% foolproof in terms of script in a few instances, such as the unnecessary song/dance/romance sequences (which make Kajal Aggarwal's performance less likely to be appreciated) as well as an audition towards the end of the second half of the film. The soundtrack is not one of my favorites either but I do confess I am not exactly known to be a Himesh Reshammiya fan.

Overall, Special 26 counts with skillful performances and an engaging plot. A special mention goes to a show-stealing Manoj Bajpayee, whose talent pierces the screen when he portrays a police officer's life, tribulations and emotions as I have rarely seen recently in police-inspired films.

One should now have the pleasure of watching Special 26 several times until Neeraj Pandey's next, a comedy script allegedly titled Aman ki Asha starring Ali Zafar, Yami Gautam, Kirron Kher and Anupam Kher.

Special 26 review:

MJ's VerdictSpecial 26 is fantastic entertainment
4.0 stars out of 5 stars

Special 26 is a cracker of a film. Con movies are difficult to make, especially when we have seen almost every kind of con on celluloid already. Ocean's Eleven (2001), The Sting (1973), Catch Me If You Can (2002), Nine Queens (2002) you name it. For the first hour or so I was enjoying it but not quite loving it. It had two thrilling sequences but the rest of it didn't soar, not to mention the wafer-thin characterization. During the interval, I wished the film would get better. I wanted to know these people more. I wanted to get wowed. Probably even wanted to get fooled. (A good con movie is always one step ahead of us). How many films these days actually do get better? How many films have a strong third act? Special 26 delivers exactly what I wished for.

Neeraj Pandey made a strong debut with A Wednesday (2008). A film unanimously loved by everyone and for good reason. I'm guessing the same feat would be repeated as Special 26 shows Pandey was not a one hit wonder. Sure it doesn't have the topical pertinence of A Wednesday, but it still has the anti-establishment poke. We must not forget that Special 26, despite being based on real events, is first and foremost a piece of entertainment and in that it excels.

The film is about a group of con men. They raid a minister's house posing as men from the CBI. Akshay Kumar plays Ajju, the leader of the fake CBI. Anupam Kher (who was as good as Naseerudin Shah in A Wednesday) gives another remarkable performance. The real CBI has Manoj Bajpayee at the helm and he is simply superb. During the film, I was wondering whose side I'm on. The real CBI or the fake one? I'll leave you to have your own tussle with your loyalties.

The recreation of the 80s is downright terrific. From the clothes to the Fiats, it puts you right into that era. Sajid Khan's remake of Himmatwala is being promoted with the tagline "The 80s are back". Sorry Mr. Khan, you might want to rethink how you want to sell your film. We have already seen the real 80s back on screen.

The performances are excellent, the plotting is well done and the music is catchy (which reminded me of the Amitabh Bachchan-Vinod Khanna con film ' Hera Pheri). My only quibble is the inclusion of songs which add nothing except length to the film. Although, in the bigger scheme of things this is a minor complaint. I was mighty pleased with this film, as I got what I mostly wished for. I would analogize this with Tiku Talsania. It's been a while since we saw him on screen. There's a cameo by him as the jewelry tycoon. I remembered that weird sound he makes. Would you believe it, even he delivered what I hoped he would!

This is one movie Akshay Kumar should be proud of being a part of. He can make as many Khiladis and Rowdy Rathores (okay probably not as many) till the time he uses his stardom to bring good entertainment to the audience. He is forgiven for conning us with crap like Tees Maar Khan (2010). These so called masala films think they are entertaining us but when you get the real deal, you realize the difference. I would compare this film with a recent Hollywood film called Argo. Most capers depend on the success of the third act. It must go a notch higher or it isn't worth it. The escapism of Special 26 takes flight (literally too). This is fantastic entertainment.

Can't wait to watch Special 26!!

That is some segment of ppl's choice, Is it compulsory whichever movie or type of films you like i also have to like them??

I can also ask the same thing as What was wrong in Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2 or Khiladi 786 which even ppl without seeing trashing them??

Just coz you like some kind of movies n that actor is doing it, doesn't mean it is the only right thing. Which u feel is trash, i find it o sum, which u feel good, i find it boring.

Special 26: The heist that almost worked

FEBRUARY 7, 2013

(Any opinions expressed here are those of the author, and not necessarily of Reuters)

Bollywood hasn't had an impressive track record with thrillers. Most have been slow and predictable while some were downright preposterous.

Director Neeraj Pandey's "A Wednesday", a film about an ordinary Mumbai citizen who plots to kill terror masterminds, was a breath of fresh air in 2008. It was imaginative, taut and full of twists and turns.

But Pandey's new film "Special 26?, a heist drama, does not quite hit the bull's eye ' with an insipid love story and a forgettable "item number" playing spoilsport.

It does have a good plot to begin with. Inspired from a real-life jewellery heist in 1987, the film is about a gang of con artists who masquerade as law enforcement officers to rob politicians and businessmen of their "black money" or undeclared wealth.

As leaders of the gang, Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher play their roles to the hilt. In films such as "Rowdy Rathore" and "Khiladi 786", Kumar relied on brawn or slapstick to impress audiences but here he gets to show off his acting skills, while Kher is at his charming and versatile best.

The director's attention to detail is commendable. Among the elements that work wonderfully to depict the 1980s on screen ' a Connaught Place dotted with hmt and Only Vimal stores, an electric blender that baffles Kher's character with its mere existence, and Maruti hatchbacks zooming through Delhi and Mumbai streets.

"Special 26? does not rely on crude jokes or slapstick comedy and sticks to subtle humour. The show stealer is Manoj Bajpayee who plays the CBI officer chasing the impersonators. It's hard to take your eyes off Bajpayee in his turn as a ruthless investigator with deadpan delivery.

But the highly dispensable romance between Kumar's character and Priya (Kajal Aggarwal in an ornamental role) defuses the tension and slows the film to an unforgivable pace ' a cardinal sin in any heist drama.

Pandey was bold enough to make "A Wednesday" without a 20-something woman as eye candy, but he disappoints the second time around.

""Special 26? is not a bad film. It keeps the audience engaged. Sadly, it could have been much better.
