To some extent I agree. But even Hrithik's a clean guy yet he has yearly biggest grossers in form of KNPH, Krissh, KMG, Dhoom 2. Hrithik's the only guy who managed to topple Khans entirely in some years (after Sunny Deol in 90s).

So if HR could manage why not Akki? The guy has a pretty likeable image unlike Khans who have received extreme reactions from public at different points of time.

I am surprised how no big banner "adopted" him in 90s. YRF took to SRK after Darr. Akshay was left out?

Does his being an outsider (and not even being adopted by film industry bigshots) also affect his career?

I know he does lot of crap films. But if craps of others can get them ATBBs why this man can't even get a year's biggest hit in 20 years?

Agreed on all points. He's indeed poorly responsive to change and is releasing movies every 2 months.

But I wonder why he was never able to get his act together if even a Salman and Aamir could do it after mistakes they made.

Akshay was always close but got defeated by a Khan
In 1994, Mohra did huge business and thy Akshay will get his first annual highest grosser but then came HAHK and rest was history.
1995 Main Khiladi Tu Anari was going in favour but then came Karan Arjun.

2003 Andaaz looked like pathbreaker but then came Tere Naam later Kal Ho Na Ho but eventually won by Koi Mil GAYA

2004 Garam Masala defeated Paheli and Mangal Pandey but defeated by No Entry and Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya
2006 Bhgaam Bhaag and Phir Hera Pheri faired better than Babul and Janeman but failed to beat Don, Fanaa and RDB
2007 Akkis golden year 4 super hits. But only Welcome became blockbuster. Beat Partner and TZP but not OSO
2008 Singh Is Kinng beat all Salman films by huge distance but at end of the year came RNBDJ and Gajhini .
2009 3 Idiots dominated by huge distance with Wanted at 2nd place
2010 Salman era started Housefull did beat MNIK but Dabangg gave that a distance
2011 Bodyguard, Ready, Don 2 and Ra.One dominated no Akki hits
2012 Akki beat both Aamir and SRK but Salman was miles ahead him

@rambo_rajkumar

Thanks for providing the year-wise comparison. That's the phenomenon whose causes this thread aimed to discuss.

Akki is really inconsistent, and he doesnt have a strong big name on his side like YRF for SRK or the goodwill of Sallu, so he even at his best, he is second fiddle to the either of the Khans. Plus, Akki really doesnt have a strong brand or a image attached to him. He does khildai786 and then a OMG- which leaves me wondering, what his his niche? Action, fitness; in this media savvy world, is associated with Sallu, SRK ( for OSO) and others who crop up everyday.

To me that explains some of his inability to be as big as the Khans and one of the biggest reasons I can tolerate him. The Khans would NEVER do an OMG or have good comic timing as him in Hera Pheri... 😳

Khans are very over-hyped, rightfully so, it's expected for actors like Ajay and Akki to play second fiddle to them at the box office.

Personally don't care much for box office figures, they are pretty meaningless in my books. I judge actors/films based on my experience.

Look BO does matter. Today Khans are hyped due to their BO only. Aamir was just another good actor doing some nice work till TZP. He got hype only after Ghajini & 3I. Salman was also written off but BO hits turned spotlight on him again.

Akshay Kumar did some good films also but they never got hype as Khan movies did. Who gives him credit for Hera Pheri? Latest is OMG being ignored (we know what media would've done if same film was made by Aamir or SRK).

And why is it "expected" for actors like Akki to play second fiddle to Khans? (He's not in same category as Ajay because he picked up more than Ajay popularity & BO wise!)

Let's discuss reasons behind it.

I am surprised why media overhypes others but not him, considering he never banned media or bashed journos the way Khans did! (But I guess he doesn't even send boxes of chocolates to media the way Khans do...so that explains his being left out)

He got good hype in 2007 though.

@Tiyali

Thanks for response. But by same logic, what's Aamir's niche? Didn't he do a Ghajini after TZP and a Dhobi Ghat after 3I? Didn't SRK do an OSO after CDI?

I'm curious despite being among the original fitness icons along with Salman & Sanjay Dutt, why he couldn't be poster boy of fitness. At best he has a Khiladi, daredevil, stunts guy kind of image.

He also does a lot of charity, he's also a rank outsider and is a self-made, rags to riches story, he has a stable marriage, has shown off what he does as an ideal son in law, he started his own Karate championship and supports traditional sports like kabaddi in his own ways. He's tried to hype these activities too. Still the goodwill he earned has not been comparable to that of others. I don't understand why!

I've seen he seems to have good fanbase online and in real life. He's this nice guy type who nobody minds but never a top draw.

It's not Akshay has been fully ignored. Seriously, like he got the Khiladi title which was before Perfectionist, King/Baadshah and BadBoy/Gold Hearted/Dabangg Khan/Tiger.
Akshay has been ranked fairly on basis of who he has delivered.

BUT AJAY IS UNDERRATED

THIS.

He does WAY too many films per year--a minimum of 3 per year. Last year he had FIVE releases! The Khans have that many releases in about 3 years, Aamir toh in 5+ years. He is overexposed in that sense. So when you have 3-4 releases per year, I guess there's less motivation to go watch am Akki film because hey ...well in 2-3 months another one will be out.

Like Kal-El says, he goes and does the same films over and over and over again until the formula totally fails...and yet he doesn't even start to change that strategy when the first warning bells appear. He didn't slow the mindless comedies down until he had some 4-5 flops in a row. CCTC should have been warning bell, but he went and did Thank You, TMK types.

It's not like he hasn't gotten any hype. He got great hype in 2007. 4 back to back hits in one year..they called him "King Kumar" and said SRK was finished, despite him having OSO + CDI the same year. But after Welcome came Tashan, CCTC, KI, and TMK. The media which had hailed him ripped him apart for those bad films...I mean these weren't just bad, they were awful...and commercial disasters to boot. He's rising back up again though. He FINALLY changed his strategy.

He's a really likable and humble guy for the most part. He minds his own business and goes about doing his own thing. As an actor, probably underrated...but his films...yikes. I refused to watch any of them, without glowing audience + critic reviews, after bits of that disaster called Kambakht Ishq. 🤢 So overall, I think he has goodwill as a person, but no goodwill in the types of films he does. In his career, the only film that will make a classics list is Hera Pheri. I guess that 1 doesn't undo the other craps he has churned out. Salman...has huge successes so it's like whatever + Being Human charity = goodwill as a person. SRK seems to ride on his charm now, though his goodwill crashed a lot in the last 2 years. Aamir has tremendous goodwill--Lagaan, RDP, TZP, 3I, and then Satyamev Jayate.
