While its nice hear things South Indian stars didnt try as they didnt care but thats only excuses. Just like some failed actresses make excuses like they were not successful because they were not pushy. Its like pulling down the ones who made it. But honestly there are many professional film industries in India yet no one goes and tries to make it outside their state. But everyone wants to make it in Bollywood because that gives them national fame.

😡 Bipasha judging Madhavan is the biggest joke.. He has had a much better career than her even in BW.. He come across as a bit laid back but his talent is unmistakable. I have not seen JB and so cant comment on him in that but I have seen a lot of his movies including the original of Saathiya and he rocked!

I agree.
I think making it big in BW is a different ball game altogether. You need to be politically savvy and your PR has to be excellent. Most South Indian actors do not put in the effort to relocate, be seen at the right parties, etc. Fear could be that if they leave for BW, they would lose out on movies in the South and then they would potentially be like the proverbial 'na ghar ka na ghaat ka...'

My two cents ...

a) Why does one have to act in BW movies?
b) Movies are about creativity and if one can quench their creative thirst in a regional movie why is there a need to even move to something else?
c) They can ask the same about y is HR,AK and others not acting in tamil/telugu/bengali movies??
Also its a well known fact that most of SI actors like Kamal etc found teh work culture in BW totally different than the one taht they were used to and refused movies in BW decades back ...

Is language a criteria for creativity??

Distinct features.

North India, and specifically Punjab, dominates romance in Indian movies. Its really hard to pass a South Indian actor as a Punjabi. I mean not many south Indian's could pass for a Raj Malhotra or Rahul Khanna or Rahul Raichand.

The other genre is action. Where there's always been a clutter of stars with big fan bases. Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty ruled this genre in the 90's. Hard for a Chiranjavi to crack this genre.

Then there's been amazing actors like a Kamal Hassan who've suffered because of their accent.

Lastly, the movies are made for the North Indians by the north Indians. From the start its been a North Indian dominated industry. Not many outsiders make it. From the era of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar to Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Sunil Dutt to Rajesh Khanna to Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Sunjay Dutt to the Khans, Hrithik, Akshay to Ranbir, Shahid and Ranveer. Its been all been Punjabis or Khans. Why single out the South Indians. How many Bengalis or Gujaratis have made it big in Bollywood?

Good point about Bengalis. I cant recollect popular male Bengali stars having made it in BW. But behind the cameras there has been a big Bengali domination right from the beginning though it has gone down now after the Bengali film industry started decaying. But there are still lot of Bengalis around and you dont feel they are absent.
The reason for asking about the South Indian stars is South Indian film industries are currently having a golden age. Commercial cinema in BW is majorly influenced by them. Dubbed South Indian movies are very popular on TV channels. Yet you dont see work flowing to South Indian industries biggest stars. We could do with some decent looking young male stars which South India could supply. But instead their movies are remade with BW stars who at times spoil the essence of the character.

Language is not a criteria for creativity. But how much of South cinema apart from Malayalam ones truly creative. They are as commercial as Bollywood.

I think its because of the huge North Indian and South Indian divide... Lot of stereotyping and prejudice.
North Indians view the South Indians as backward, conservative, narrow-minded and ordinary looking. South Indians view the North Indians as show offs, loud, corrupt and illiterate.
(PS: I am not generalizing but this is what i have observed growing up in both North and South India)

Rest of it is an extension of that mindset. People prefer watching someone who they can relate to culturally. India is still a very male centric society and very region centric. On screen too they prefer watching an actor who they can relate to in some way... Thats exactly why the SI actors don't click with the Bollywood audience and i am sure actors like the Khans/Kumar/Devgun won't click in regional cinema either. They have their own fan base and anything outside it is hard to crack.

And regarding actors like Kamal, Surya, Mahesh etc and acceptance in Bollywood. I really don't think its got to do with looks or the rejection is because of how they look ... We have some very ordinary looking superstars and if looks was the criteria, except for a couple of them the rest would have been rejected.

I also think it has to do with looks. Pardon my ignoramoose self, but before this forum I thought all South Indian male stars were overweight, pot bellied with mustaches. I also don't know the language so couldn't be bothered to watch them.Since then, I have heard South movies are actually better than bollywood. So I may just start watching them if I can get hold of the subtitled ones on netflix.

As for their success, I don't think they will do well in mainstream bollywood until the general population is familiar with their South filmography to some extent. Its different for the girls because pretty much any pretty face will do as long as the actor is a huge megastar.
