And this will hurt SRK so bad. Blah. WHY would you invest so much in Anubhav Sinha, SRK?!! I had a bad feeling about this movie ever since it was announced...

yeh mann, have had a bad feeling about it since the first look, but hoped that it worked for Srk! it si funny how both Farah and Srk are not doing well without each other!

Masand's review :

Ambitious, but flawed

Ra.One

Rating: 2.5

October 26, 2011

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil, Satish Kaushik

Director: Anubhav Sinha

Superhero film Ra.One kicks off on an unusual note, as geeky tech-wiz dad Shekhar Subramaniam, played by Shah Rukh Khan, tries to become his young son's hero by creating the greatest video-game villain of all time. Named Ra.One in a not-so-subtle reference to The Ramayan's Lanka king, this super-villain almost immediately shows signs of breaking out of his virtual world to wreak havoc and destruction in the real one. Yet even as danger is lurking around the corner, Ra.One's creator Shekhar is distractedly working the dance floor with his wife.

To me, this moment sums up the entire experience of watching this ambitious but flawed superhero film — every time we're drawn into the simplistic but intriguing story of how Ra.One can only be vanquished by the game's superhero G.One (also played by Shah Rukh), director Anubhav Sinha feels the desperate need to inject a dance number or a comical sequence or a melodramatic interlude into the narrative. It's distracting from the superhero theme and more importantly, it makes the film clunky.

Once again, it's Shah Rukh Khan's sheer presence and energy, coupled with the narrative's don't-stop-to-think pace that makes Ra.One watchable despite its flaws. This is an event movie, a spectacle, not really a film. It's 2 hours 35 minutes of special effects, action sequences and superficial romantic and emotional entanglements. You can see the ambition and imagination that the makers have poured into this movie, and while it thankfully doesn't succumb to the kind of lazy film-making we've seen recently in Rascals, Bodyguard, Ready or the Golmaal films, Ra.One clearly suffers from a case of cramming in too much. Frankly, in all this, the superhero theme itself gets a bit lost — G.One's committment is towards protecting his family from Ra.One, not saving the world from evil. In the process, he's less of a superhero than Superman, Batman, Spiderman or even Krrish; G.One is more of a personal bodyguard with special powers.

Yet adhering to the unwritten superhero rule, G.One too is born out of tragedy, when his creator Shekhar is killed by Ra.One. Strangely, despite the heavy funeral song, we're barely convinced that wife and kid are grieving for Shekhar; so smoothly does G.One take his place in their lives. In their greed to make Ra.One an entertainment extravaganza, the writers inject innuendoes that come off as crass — like the thesis the so-called feminist wife is doing on Indian swear words, or the scene in which a gay airport security guard is turned on by G.One's body piercings. The special appearances by Rajnikanth in a spoof of his own Robot, or a stylish early sequence featuring Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra only end up playing to the gallery. You're also left wondering why there's such an unhealthy obsession with the crotch, with so many scenes of grabbing, clutching, whacking or kicking it.

Ra.One heavily references films like Total Recall, The Matrix, Iron Man, X-Men and Terminator-2, yet there is a certain thrill attached to the action sequences. A car chase through London's streets is rivaled by a local-train sequence in India where G.One leaps from one bogie to another. There's also the mind-boggling sight of the beautiful Gothic structure of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus crumbling as the train ploughs right through it. These portions make up for the long-drawn climatic battle between Ra.One and G.One fought in a rather tacky virtual world.

The only real standout performance is by Shah Rukh Khan. His Aiyyo-speaking Shekhar Subramaniam is caricaturish but charming, while as G.One, he gives even his robotic video-game character a charismatic edge. Kareena Kapoor, as Shekhar's wife, provides the glamorous oomph factor as she shimmies to that fantastic number Chamak Challo, while Arjun Rampal makes a menacing Ra.One. However, too much screen time is wasted on the long-haired Armaan Verma who plays Shekhar's son, while Shahana Goswami playing a video game developer, inexplicably vanishes from the screen midway through the story.

What's missing from Ra.One is a sure-footed director's touch. Anubhav Sinha fails to bring all the elements together, and while this superhero film has plenty sound and fury, it's sorely lacking slickness. I'm going with two and a half out of five forRa.One. Like the spaghetti and curds concoction that Shah Rukh digs into in an early scene, Ra.One is clearly an acquired taste.

Ra.One Movie Review

"Ra.One is a must-watch for SRK fans and SFX lovers" *** (3 stars)

"Ra.One is a must-watch for SRK fans and SFX lovers"

Shahrukh in Ra OneAfter Rajnikanth, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan; the next superstar jumping on the 'superhero flicks' bandwagon is none other than the supposed Badshah of Bollywood ' Shah Rukh Khan. With an astonishing investment of Rs. 150 crores (suggested by reports), Ra.One is not only Shah Rukh Khan's most ambitious project till date but also Bollywood's costliest film ever made. The film's publicity campaign has been phenomenal enough to be referred to as a case study by marketing students. From getting international singer Akon on board, to the mega superstar Rajnikanth; Shah Rukh Khan has left no stone unturned. As he must have wished, since the past few months Bollywood has been all about ' Ra.One! Will Ra.One be able to live up to the tremendous hype and expectations? Will it be able to recover its investment?

A father tries hard to fit-in in his Son's badass world. While Shekhar (Shah Rukh Khan) was trying every trick in the book to woo his son with wife Sonia (Kareena Kapoor); his son had already given up on him. Just when the father-son duo hit a deadlock- Shekhar strikes gold when he designs one hell of a game. Finally it all starts falling in place. The family comes together, but only to find themselves in the middle of a crash. Not just a hard drive crash but a crash that would drive them to a disaster. All hell breaks loose when ' the game that was meant to be played with, starts playing them. Ra.One- The next level!

Arjun in Ra One"Tum log har saal raavan ko is liye jalate ho kyunki tum jaante ho ke raavan kabhi marta nahi" ' Killer dialogue, isn't it?! Well, the best part of the film is the bad man himself having the title role to his credit ' Ra.One. The film starts off with an outright ridiculous beginning. The fact that a 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' song starts playing in the midst of a superhero sequence, justifies my judgment. You pray the film doesn't follow this trend, and thankfully, your wish is granted. The film goes on with an interesting flow and a brilliant latter half to its pre-interval segment. Watch out for the entire portion which shows the emergence of Ra.One into life, it has the ability to get you some serious goosebumps! And the credit purely goes to the SFX (special effects) team. The SFX witnessed in Ra.One is definitely the best ever seen in the Hindi Film industry. Another plus point is the action sequences between G.One and Ra.One. It keeps you wanting for more. Also, Shah Rukh Khan's star power and screen presence is unmatchable. He can even make a Tamil character likeable with maybe the worst Tamil accent ever. That's Shah Rukh Khan for you.

However, the film does have its share of flaws too. The film majorly defaults in its "balancing act". The film tries to balance out between a sci-fi superhero flick and a massy Bollywood entertainer, and that's where it loses focus. This leads to several unnecessary sequences, typical Indianised Bollywood moments plus dialogues and failed emotional sequences. The forced humor which majorly comprises of some kicks in the nuts, fails at most places. Except the scene where a homosexual officer is checking out Shah Rukh Khan's body parts. That's hilarious! Even the emotional quotient between Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor doesn't make an impact and seems unnecessary. Sequences having Rajnikanth, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra's special appearances seem absolutely forced to increase the 'star power' of the film. Also, why does there have to be a hero v/s 10 gundas scene in every damn film?! Getting on to some other typical Indianised Bollywood moments, what's with the scene having G.One asking Sonia about Karva Chauth?! There are many more such scenes. Only if the film had concentrated on just the 'superhero' aspect of the film and have some more friction between G.One and Ra.One instead of concentrating on other unnecessary storylines, Ra.One could have proved to be path-breaking cinema.

Kareena in RaOneBeing director Anubhav Sinha's next directorial venture post Tum Bin, Dus and Cash, Ra.One has definitely escalated his level. However, Sinha doesn't live up to the expectations created by the scale of this film. Not only the direction, but also screenplay by him along with Mushtaq Sheikh and Kanika Dhillon isn't first-rate and seems more of an attempt to make a 'complete package' rather than a sci-fi film. However, the strictly okay direction and screenplay is compensated with some brilliant cinematography by V. Manikanandan and great special effects. The music has already topped all popular music charts, Chammak Chalo being the talk of the town. However, it's not only the music but also the background score by Vishal-Shekhar which is brilliantly gripping.

Moving on to the performances, Ra.One belongs to Shah Rukh Khan. He brings in some amazing star power and screen presence as always. Frankly, the performance doesn't require histrionics. Being Shah Rukh Khan throughout is just more than enough! However, while playing Shekhar, he should have worked on his Tamil accent.Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal are hardly there, but considering their poor performances, their minimal screen time actually works for the film. Kareena Kapoor, an actress who proudly claims to be doing equally meaty roles like her male counterparts, does nothing but add glam quotient to the film. No doubt, she looks drop-dead gorgeous. However, Kareena does nothing but dance, crib, look good; and gives in an average performance in sequences which require her to emote. In fact, if the emotional sequences don't work, Kareena Kapoor's mediocre performance is a major factor. Arjun Rampal tries his best to do a Voldemort but fails. The special effects version of Ra.One has more expressions compared to Arjun Rampal. Even in his minimal screen time, he fails to make an impact the character of Ra.One would require to do so. Armaan Verma gives in a confident performance. Shahana Goswami and Tom Wu don't have much scope. Satish Kaushik and Suresh Menon are good in their usual bits. Special appearances by Rajnikanth, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra are absolutely forced! Amitabh Bachchan's voice-over makes an impact. One wonders after getting 'Shahenshah', 'Chitti', 'Khalnayak' and 'Desi Girl', what stopped Shah Rukh from getting Krrish a.k.a good friend Hrithik Roshan from making an appearance.

Overall, there's no doubt that Ra.One as a film is flawed. However, Shah Rukh Khan's star power and the brilliant work by the film's special effects team is the saving grace and makes Ra.One a definite one-time watch. The film might not be liked by all sections of the audiences but shall definitely be loved by the masses. Also, it's a must-watch for all SRK fans and SFX lovers.

Eh i dunno...it had the potential of being cheesy and falling flat. But at least masand says it's better than the likes of Bodyguard and Golmaals. But people actually liked those. Who knows whether they'll like this. I'll be honest...I wasn't excited over this movie, but I wanted it to do well for Shah!

Guys this film was never meant for critics.
This member review from filmifanatics realy raised my hopes!
I literally JUST got home from watching it so this 'review' is going to be crappy and all over the place haha but here goes...

My expectations from the film were quite low. I thought it would be tacky and laughable... because when Indian cinema usually tries stuff like this, that's exactly what we get... something we can laugh at I still watched it First Day First Show because whether I show it or not anymore, I love SRK to deathh and I knew the film would be entertaining if nothing else.

Is it entertaining? HELL YES. Perfect Diwali film. I'm sure it's going to be a huge success! You can see the hard work they put into the film and I can see it all paying off... Really looking forward to seeing how much money this one makes.

The film has a good screenplay and surprisingly an interesting story.. like OH MY GOD the characters of a video game COME TO LIFE... JDSHLHDSS I was so scared LMFAO No jokes.. whenever Ra One came onscreen my heart was in my mouth and I was holding onto the arm rests on my seat ROFL! Good Vs Evil is possibly the oldest story in the world... but it can never get boring because it's something that will always exist.

It's hard to rank this film and compare it to other films because IT'S NOT LIKE OTHER FILMS... it's VERY different. Ra.One is Bollywood's VERY FIRST REAL Sci-Fi film!

The film will be remembered in years to come as a landmark film in Hindi cinema.. it's set the standards of Indian cinema so much higher.. I will NEVER settle for visual effects in a film which are less than this... THEY WERE BRILLIANT here.. I'm in awe! I'm so proud, as a Bollywood fan, that we've reached this level where we can have this standard of technicalities in our films... this beautiful cinematography, these amazing sfx.. Ahhh! I'm so hyper. I feel like fighting with a baddie and playing on game consoles. LMFAO I had this effect after Krrish too when I was jumping on the sofas at home -.- Okay so yeah I sound like an idiot..a child... but that's what Ra One does to you.. it brings out the child in you, and who wouldn't love that?

The music suits the film.. Raftaarein/the theme music is the heart of the film... Chammak Challo and Criminal were awesome to watch... Dildara and Bhare Naina were sweeet.

The action sequences and SFX are, like I already said, absolutely brilliant... and there's some really nice comic and cute moments too... I even cried in one scene!

All the actors did a great job... be it the little boy Armaan (though his long hair and lipstick made me SMH, he acted well nonetheless), Satish Shah and Dalip Tahil (got me nostalgic as I remembered PBDHH lol), ARJUN RAMPAL (whos role was surprisingly short but he leaves an impact nonetheless)...

Kareena Kapoor was STUNNING to watch... She's absolutely gorgeous and so natural as an actress.. it's so nice to watch her onscreen. She gets the chance to portray a variety of emotions with this role (one of her sequences shocked the life out of me haha but I wont say more on that). Fantastic as always. I wish there were more actresses like her!

Shah Rukh Khan.. what can I even say about him? He's an incredibly natural actor and we know that already... Watching him onscreen is always an amazing experience... Be it as G.One or Shekhar Subramanium, his understanding of the characters is PERFECT and he brings them to life in the best way possible. When I heard SRK is playing a superhero, I had doubted it LOL but after seeing the movie I don't think there could be a better G.One! I love him and nothing I say can ever show how much I love him or how amazing an actor he is.

Okay I'll run out of adjectives if I make this review any longer LOL but yeah... Loved the movieee! Super cute. Expect to have fun and you wont be disappointed. Highly recommended!!
