If she wanted to learn she would have - its clear she doesnt care about it nor do the people who make movies with her.
But I dont see why she needs to be applauded for coming to India and becoming a star here. She was just lucky that's it.

I just feel it is difficult to make a place in peoples heart, understand the culture and still make it big here. I would say the same for Frieda Pinto (for example) she was able to make a place for herself in a differnt country I do applaud her luck or talent or whatever it is to make it big in a place where you are new.

I am sure she understand hindi but you feel shy to speak in that language because you think people will make fun of you.

Trust me it will take you a long time to learn a new language especially when you are the only one in the family learning that language and unless you dedicate a lot of time in to reading books, watching movies or take the help of a tutor you won't learn. It's not as easy we think it is.

the only way to become proficient in a language is to communicate in it, yes you can read books, watch movies etc, but without practice, one cannot gain fluency... and really, 8 years is more than enough time, if anything.. being able to speak in Hindi will help her to connect with a much larger audience off-screen.

Her hindi isnt as bad as people like to make out, she has improved over the years - its her pronunciation and the accent twang that people have a problem with.

I find it quite amusing that people have problems with Kat's language skills when she's playing an Indian, but its fine for other actors and actresses to play Brit-asians, Americans etc but with an Indian accent. Anushka in Patiala House springs to mind.

i think she should make an effort to learn it.
i dont get why she is considered a big star when all she is in a film really is a bit of smiling decoration. she get roughly 3-4 phrases (complete sentences too if she's lucky) & thats it.
then its just songs & saying 1 or 2 english word to make an exit from a scene so she wont have to speak more hindi
8 yrs in bollywood & she still speaks with that heavy english accent
gosh i have an english friend who can sing Zindaggi Ek Safar Hai Suhana with a better hindi sounding accent then kat!!!
& how she learnt was just by listening to the song & picking it up from there.
i learn german from friends online who just right it down for me. not that difficult!

I can understand what you are saying. But for me she has always claimed to be Indian so I can't equate her to Frieda making a niche for herself in the West.Ofcourse Frieda does not have evan 25% ofthe star status that Katrina has. so IMo they are very different. And again its not like she was a huge star in England and she came to Bollywood to proove herself. She is hardworking for sure and that i applaud.
