I think over the years i have enjoyed some of the so called masala movies and the so called good cinema that is the off beat cinema...
Last year I enjoyed Dabangg as much as I enjoyed Udaan...I enjoyed Golmaal 3 as much as i enjoyed LSD.... I enjoyed Robot as much as I enjoyed Peepli Live...
As long as it entertains me I like it.... and my perception of it being well made is when I enjoy it....If i enjoy it and if it entertains me I consider it well made...Oh well my rant makes no sense...😳
In the past too some of the masala films have entertained me like KNPH, OSO,MHN, K3G etc... just like the off beat ones like Bheja fry, Wednesday, Aamir etc have entertained me too...
For some reason I never enjoyed any of Govinda's films....Some of Akshay's films are entertaining and some are just cringe worthy...
I am okay with the masala movies as long as it is not something like TMK which was just terrible...
but off late the ones I find tedious to watch are the rom com genres like.. Break ke baad, Shaadi ke baad, Barbaadi ke baad...etc....

I don't hate masala..it just has to be done well..especially when it comes to comedies. The last few big-budget comedies to have come out of BW have been so horrible..they're just trying to hard. It's like they're saying: I cracked a joke, so you better laugh!

Wait, now the 'masala' genre is the underdog in bollywood? 😕 😆

look...acc to me, if a film succeeds in its basic intent, its a well made film...a thriller is made to "thrill", a comedy is made to "laugh", a masala film is made to please the majority and play it to the galleries...masala films which are superhits, are so because they have pleased the majority...and hence, succeeded in their intent. .which is why i said films like YPD, veer, tmk etc are NOT hits because they didnt satisfy the basic need of a masala film - draw the audience and involve them completely.

and i disagree with the fact that masala films dunt require artistic merit. Just like therz a bias against slapstic that its too silly to require any semblance of thought or intelligence. A film's primary objective is to entertain...if it dosent grip the audience, its a fail from the word go..now that can be a masala film, or an artistic film...films are made for the "audience" and if the majority of its target audience do not relate to it, its failed in its primary level and that, is a bad film acc to me...

films like ishqiya, omkara, dev d etc have succeeded because they have reached out to the target audience (multiplexes and urban areas)....similarly, a masala film is a success if it reaches out to its target audience, which is basically the masses...

A masala film can be intelligently made....making OTT look convincing to the majority, is not an easy task....sholay, deewar, amar akbar anthony, OSO, MHN..and yes, i would say even dabangg are examples of a masala well done, with the latter three being satires on 80's and 70's. cinema. They completely involve the majority of the audience in the song and dance, the action pieces and the emotional sequences....i know it is subjective if u like a film or not, which is why im using the word majority here.

Since you have people on this forum in mind, I think people have different tastes in different things. I don't find South Indian actors goodlooking or heck almost all bollywood actors look bad in my eyes too. But I'm not gonna go and question other people's tastes, who cares? I find Govinda's films trash, there are others who like it. Different strokes for different folks.

when i meant taken seriously, i meant as successes. If a vishal bharadwaj film is a success, ppl are like, oh its because the content is good. If a masala film is a success, its because of the genre,or the hype, or the stars in it, nothing to do with the fact that its a "good film" or an "entertaining film"...masala films are robbed off any artistic merit whatsoever, even if they are successes...not all films are meant for intellectual simulation, but that dosent mean they are not "intelligently made"...andaaz apna apna, bheja fry, band baaja baraat etc are prime examples.

Hate Masala? On the contrary, masala potboiler Dabang was the highest grosser of last year. So, this article is moot. Idk why people complain when they sense a little bit of change. India still churns out mindless, idiotic masala movies all the time. LSD, Dev D, Udaan are exceptions not the rule.

Yes, I hate masala, I've always hated mindless entertainers. Did not like DDLJ, KKHH when I first saw them and don't like them now. Oh and yes they are masala melodrama in my eyes. And lets not talk about Govinda, Rajni movies, they are trash.

Did I mention: In my opinion?

urm..if u actually read the first post and the article, it says I may sound like a crank but I'm not against progress ' like I said, I loved post-modern Tashan to pieces - and there is certainly a place on film screens worldwide for films like Ishqiya and Dev.D which use a subtle and modern form of Bollywood narrative. What Iam against is this half-baked idea that films can only be taken seriously if they are 'realistic' and that 'realism' is something only found using a Hollywood style of filmmaking. This idea is something that filmmakers are going to have to shake if they want audiences to start returning to the theaters en masse.

so the article is NOT against progress or change, like u say it is. Its not complete moot. its not complaining against change, Its complaining against the bias that a good non-masala movie has, over a good masala movie.

moreover, i mention in my first post that i was talking abt the audience in IF...NOT the general audience, because its because of them that the movies are blockbusters obviously...i was clearly referring to IF.
