look...acc to me, if a film succeeds in its basic intent, its a well made film...a thriller is made to "thrill", a comedy is made to "laugh", a masala film is made to please the majority and play it to the galleries...masala films which are superhits, are so because they have pleased the majority...and hence, succeeded in their intent. .which is why i said films like YPD, veer, tmk etc are NOT hits because they didnt satisfy the basic need of a masala film - draw the audience and involve them completely.
and i disagree with the fact that masala films dunt require artistic merit. Just like therz a bias against slapstic that its too silly to require any semblance of thought or intelligence. A film's primary objective is to entertain...if it dosent grip the audience, its a fail from the word go..now that can be a masala film, or an artistic film...films are made for the "audience" and if the majority of its target audience do not relate to it, its failed in its primary level and that, is a bad film acc to me...
films like ishqiya, omkara, dev d etc have succeeded because they have reached out to the target audience (multiplexes and urban areas)....similarly, a masala film is a success if it reaches out to its target audience, which is basically the masses...
A masala film can be intelligently made....making OTT look convincing to the majority, is not an easy task....sholay, deewar, amar akbar anthony, OSO, MHN..and yes, i would say even dabangg are examples of a masala well done, with the latter three being satires on 80's and 70's. cinema. They completely involve the majority of the audience in the song and dance, the action pieces and the emotional sequences....i know it is subjective if u like a film or not, which is why im using the word majority here.
