I'm one of the few here who like most of Akshay's comedies😆
And I was crazy about Om Shanti Om when it came out too😛

Honestly I have no idea why members on IF hate masala films....I love them because I know there's only a small chance that I'll get bored or disappointed

THIS. SO true. SO SO very true.

There CAN be good Masala films out there, no doubt about that.
But it just isn't DONE aaj kal, on honest opinion.

ALl that Masala films have become are breeding grounds for actresses who KNOW that they can't really do much else (yeah.. I know, not very subtle, sorry?), to show off their cleavage in full glory and lip-sync to generic bolly hip hop beats. OH and of course, you gotta put a chaap of COMEDY on all these masala flicks, or "rom-com".

The only masala film that I thought was done recently, was Pyaar Ke Side Effects. and that's not very recent at all ahaha. It HAD good acting, GOOD jokes, good masala share (yeah, they had cleavage in that film too, but it was RELEVANT to the story), and it had a good story, a good binder, like corn starch.

What's the definition of a Masala movie again? Would BBB or JWM count as masala movies?

well its typical potboiler stuff....

herz an explanation i got off from the same website

Masala-style films are blatantly unrealistic and extremely over-the-top in tone - the kinds of films where a Hero can beat up 50 guys and then magically teleport to an exotic location to shake his pelvis at Mumaith Khan (who will make the camera bounce). While they almost always hinge on a romantic plot line, there is usually some larger issue at play, whether it is corruption in politics, corruption in the military, medical problems, or just the general unfairness of life.

If the plot doesn't allow for something, don't worry, the writers will fit it in anyways. Story meanders through side characters and comedy subplots and more often then not the end does not really satisfy the dramatic tension of the beginning.

(But I don't care since I'm just in it for the ride.)😆

examples being: dabangg, agneepath, deewar, sholay, amar akbar anthony, om shanti om, ghajni, main hoon na, kaho naa pyaar hai, kkrish, wanted etc etc...

As long as it's a good movie, then why not? I ENJOYED main hoon na, OSO, Garam Masala, Hera Pheri although they were highly unrealistic movies. I dont give a rats ass if it's not serious cinema with a subtle script or anything like that.

Having said that, people cant dish out a crap fare like TMK and call it a masala movie. I cant like a movie just because it's "masala", it has to be a well-made movie.

i am not at all against ''masala'' movies. In fact, i have never been able to make myself go to a theater to watch a film like Guzarish or Pipli Live, for the simple fact that they are sort of ''educative cinema'' n when i pay a sum to book a seat in the hall, i do that for relaxing myself n for enjoyment. I can get enough info about a quadripligic or farmer's suicide on net for free...so why pay a sum for that, when it's not even enjoyable?😳.....No doubt these are good movies n such movies should be made (for the evolution of Indian Cinema), but people like me can't go n watch them in theater. We better wait for them to be telecasted on TV. But yeah, am super excited to watch a Tanu Weds Manu or Band Baja Barat in the cinema hall, even if am not particularly fond of it's actors. 😃

agreed with your last point...

but I wouldn't call Hera Pheri a masala film. It had great comedy, and yeah, it had good star power, but didn't really have the chick factor, nor the music. Not much romance either.
