Ayan Mukerji makes a solid debut as a director with his maiden venture, WAKE UP SID.

Mukerji is in control of the proceedings right from the word go. There is a level of rare maturity in his handling of the two lead actors so diverse in their approach to cinema. One a bubblegum, chocolate hero; another, a solid performer known more for her intense performances. Mukerji's control comes to the fore in his handling of every scene. He never goes over the top, and even the perpetual 'bunch of friends at college' are refreshingly used.

There is also a smart smattering of an interesting mix of English numbers used to light up certain moods, which works as a stimulant.

WAKE UP SID, is a mature love story. On one hand of the spectrum, you have a mature, older woman in search of her independence and on the other hand, you have an irresponsible, immature lad who is so dependent on his parents and their wealth. One day there is a wake up call from where begins his inward journey to unraveling the man within.

Sidharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) has it easy. He has a rich father, a doting mother and a bunch of friends who he moves out with. Life is set. It couldn't be better. He even has credit cards to fund his extravagant lifestyle. Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma) comes to Bombay from Calcutta in search of her identity. She has a dream of becoming a writer and she knows this is the city of dreams. Sid and Aisha meet on the last day of college when she comes in with one of their friends. They hit it off instantly and go on to become the best of friends. Sid helps her in her house hunting and even helps her set it up. However, when the final year results are out, Sid is the only one who has failed.

Upset, he insults his mother (Supriya Pathak) and refuses to apologize even after his dad (Anupam Kher) asks him to. Because he does not want to go by the rules laid down by his dad, he leaves home and finds shelter at Aisha's home. Here is where he begins to mature, seeing life from a different perspective. Helping him through is a confused Aisha. Confused because she thinks he is a kid and somewhere deep down she is slowly beginning to look at him 'differently'.

Ranbir Kapoor has the charm of Rishi Kapoor and the sexiness of his mother Neetu Kapoor. He uses this potent mix to deadly effect. A natural with any scene, Ranbir walks into this role with the ease of a pro and comes out trumps. Be it when he is enjoying himself out there with his friends, insulting his mother or even keeping up pace with Konkona, he is perfect.

Konkona, not known for her glamorous image, keeps pace with the cute Kapoor lad. The two look fabulous together. It's only a tight script and a good director that could weave this magic.

Love you, Sid!

Wake Up Sid in literal terms if the coming of age story of one rich but irresponsible boy to a man.

Siddharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) never had to try hard and always got everything he wished for on platter thanks to his affluent family. Freshly out from college, his attitude towards life continues to be careless as he keeps hanging around without any aim. He befriends Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma) who has come from Kolkata to Mumbai to lead an independent life and find her own self.

Sid fails in his graduation resulting into a spat with his father (Anupam Kher) after which he leaves his house. He seeks shelter under Aisha's apartment and life changes drastically as he has to live on his own without his prosperous parental support.

One can instantly draw references of Siddharth Mehra's carefree characterization from similar characters played by Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan in Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya respectively. The basic premise of the film might seem predictable not because you have seen that several times in films before but experienced something similar in real life. An average youth can relate to Sid since it's a common phase most might experience in life when one has to shoulder responsibilities after a spoon-fed life.

The simplicity of Ayan Mukerji's writing is what appeals to the viewer. The screenplay is fresh and frothy and the feel-good factor is devoid of a mushy treatment. The scene where Sid makes an instant cake for Aisha on her birthday or another where a classmate pays his bill when Sid's credit card stops working are sensitively written and directed. The delicately designed dialogues by Niranjan Iyengar mainly comprising casual conversations from daily life add depth to the drama.

Unconventional as the pairing might seem, the chemistry between Ranbir and Konkona is very richly and gracefully developed. Much against the conventional candyfloss chemistry concocted from dream songs and romance-laden lines, the rapport between the duo is so slice of life and unadulterated. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is soothing. Mainly playing in the background, it acts as a catalyst to the romance as each song has a lot to say through its multiple montages set in transition mode; much refreshing over the clichd song and dance.

The pacing is slow but the momentum drops only in the second half where the screenplay tends to get somewhat cyclic. Also most of the subplots from Sid's friends to Aisha's neighbour (Kashmera Shah) do not contribute much to the central plot. Again half-baked parallel love-stories of Sid and his colleague Tania and Aisha and her boss (Rahul Khanna) do not make the narrative multidimensional. The second half could have been crisper and the end could have been more innovative.

Technically the film is flawless with Anil Mehta's cinematography capturing the Mumbai city in a fresh perspective. Whether it's the Mumbai monsoon in the climax or the Queen's necklace at Marine Drive in the summer nights, each frame is rich in texture. Priyanjali Lahiri and Manish Malhotra's costume design complement the characters aptly.

Ranbir Kapoor effortlessly gets into the character of Sid and it's good to see him in a fresh outlook over his lover-boy image so far. Konkona Sen Sharma is dependable as usual and is expressive in her act. Anupam Kher is persuasive in the scene when he confronts Ranbir post his results. Supriya Pathak is a pleasant change from the regular Kirron Kher kind Bollywood moms. Rahul Khanna almost gets to play the same special appearance character that he did in recent films like Love Aaj Kal and Dil Kabaddi. Shikha Talsania and Namit Das as Sid's friends are decent. Kashmera Shah gets no scope.

It's pleasing to see Bollywood warming up to fresh talents like Ayan Mukerji and waking up to compelling narratives like Wake Up Sid.

Wake Up Sid Opens Very Well

Friday 2nd October 2009 15.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Wake Up Sid has opened strongly at multiplexes across India. The film has a very limited release on single screens and is being mainly screened in multiplexes. Although the film generated plenty of curiosity over the last weeks, the distributors have not gone for an overkill at the multiplexes and kept screenings at 6-8 shows in most multiplexes. The first day is looking to finish at a strong 80-85% opening from multiplexes.

The collections of some multiplexes in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune and Bangalore will be over 90% and many screenings going house full for the evening and night shows.

The strong start is a big boost to the film which a few weeks back looked like a film that will pick up with word of mouth but the good promotion and popularity of the title track has ensure a very good start at the box office.

Wake Up Sid: A whole new formula film

Tags: Uncategorized, Bollywood, formula, Konkona Sen Sharma, ranbir kapoor

Bollywood has always survived on the formula — the elusive secret to making a successful film that combines elaborate sets, melodrama and of course, dancing around trees. Then multiplexes arrived and we were told it was the era of niche films, ones that didn't go by the formula.

Films like "Wake Up Sid" are well on their way to becoming a meeting point between the old and the new, and becoming a whole different genre of films — the formula multiplex film.

Now that the multiplex audience in India is such an important part of the movie going public, there are a lot of films being made with them in mind and most are now beginning to stick to a formula.

Have an urban hero (preferably young) confused about life, throw in some college scenes, smart dialogues and a disco scene or two.

Make the aesthetics such that they appeal to the yuppie audience and there you have it — the formula to make a multiplex film.

Let me also add a disclaimer here. I don't think it's a bad thing to make a formula film. After all, many of Bollywood's biggest hits have followed the formula but they have also had that something extra. "Wake Up Sid", starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma doesn't always pass that test.

Kapoor plays Siddharth Mehra, a spoilt rich brat who has no aim in life except — do nothing. He meets Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma), elder to him and in search of "independence" in Mumbai. The two soon strike up a friendship.
When Sid fails in his exams and his father decides to crack the whip, our protagonist decides he is better off living on his own. He lands up at Aisha's house, hoping to make it in the real world, but soon realizes he isn't equipped for it at all.

As a coming-of-age film, this one has its moments and first-time director Ayan Mukherji manages to inject the film with a lot of moments that make you smile. However there are also times when you feel the film could rise above the average but doesn't.

Of the cast, Ranbir Kapoor is excellent, really getting into the character, bewildered expressions and all. Konkona Sen Sharma is also efficient but doesn't dazzle as she usually does. Special mention of Shikha Talsania as Sid's friend Laxmi for a spirited performance.

"Wake Up Sid" isn't necessarily a memorable film, nor is it an original one. But it is good for a one-time watch over the weekend, which is a lot more than what Bollywood has dished out over the past few weeks, so I would say go for this one.

I think I might go see it on Sunday. Has anyone heard of the controversy that has happened with Raj Thakerey over the use of the word "Bombay". That is just beyond silly.

A Tweet from Raja Sen about the film:

Ranbir, such a star. Another underwhelming film, yet he impresses. Wake Up Sid starts out clever, fresh but really drags at the end. Pity.
