i personally love karan johar and his movies..its once's choice to watch a certain movie..if one dosent like karan johar, then noone's forced to watch his movies...i think movies r supposed to be felt..and not understood..i completely felt KKHH, K3G and KANK(except for the sexy sam part)..and those r the only 3 movies he directed..
as for dostana..it was supposed to be a light hearted comedy..and i did find it pretty funny
i look forward to my name is khan..karan is growing as a director..and i wld love to see him handle deeper and more serious issues..am sure he can do it

Okay, honestly....does anyone take KJo's movies seriously? Does my life change after I watch a KJo film? Hell no! Do I get entertained with a few laughs? Yeah. Do I think KJo can handle mature subjects other than love stories? Not really.

Dostana was a stupid funny movie. Movies like that come out all the time in America and make good money at the box office. People like to watch movies that don't require much thought. Go figure. I didn't like KANK....KJo totally overglorified adultery and I didn't really understand how or why SRK and Rani's characters fell in love. The only movie I've really loved of KJo's was KKHH!

i personally liked dostanna and i thought it was hilarious and karan johar is a good actor like K3G was good, kal ho na hoa, kuch kuch hota hai were great for me, but i do agree that KANK wans't that good didn't like the part how srk and rani got together. but still i don't know why you guys are just saying that just because of 1-2 movies of Kjo's was bad because lots of directors make crappy movies. and i don't think that dostanna is offensive to gay people.

Lol, this has got to be my favorite argument. 😆 I'm disappointed that it came so late, liken chalo.... I'll watch whatever I want, and think of it however I want to. 😊 You can't prevent someone from making a movie....if there was a FIRE, KJO made Dostana (good or bad is a different question...I didn't like it myself). BUT people do seem to still watch his movies and love them....Unfortunately....😛 so of course he will continue to make movies!!! People make crappier movies in Bollywood and make money off it....But do they reach the status that K-Jo has reached?! He acts like he's a God amongst insects, the messiah for the minorities....if they can so can KJO!! Anyways I am not his fan...I only like his Kuch Kuch Hota Hai...but I do like his cheesiness and I do like him

If you like melodrama his movies are good.

But then comes KANK (which I liked conceptually btw). His execution of that sensitive subject was bad and not to forget Sexy Sam!! It's like making the movie FIRE in Kekta style! YIKESSS!! His problem is he treats sensitive issues in a very amateur way. So I feel he should stick to melodrama...unless he really improves with MNIK (and I hope not to see some Sexy Aunty or sthg there!! 😆). If you are making a serious film, be serious.

Well, we finally agree. As I said earlier in the thread, I have no issues with K-Jo making mind-numbingly stupid, spineless, fluff, but I do have a problem with him sending out the wrong message, and handling such important issues with such immaturity and insensitivity.

I have always believed that K-Jo's success lies in his being part of the band of beautiful people of Bollywood. His movies have succeeded because they provide the audiences of the Indian subcontinent and now of the diaspora, predictable story lines, comforting endings, rich pageantry of costumes, music, dances and a vivid color palette.

Unfortunately, all this success has gone to his head and he has actually started to believe that he can handle the complexity of adultery, failed marriage, and homosexuality.

Well atleast he has the guts to make a film on homosexuality and even though it was a comedy, i do not think it was offensive to gays...abhi camped it up in parts but most of the time i thought they did a good job.

Alot of people seem to like his movies i do not know about the others reason i like his movies is , simple but good story has a good cast and songs..apart from that hes not like other film makers (namaste london coming to mind!) that attempts to make films about NRI and ends up making them look like idiots he goes to effort from the clothes to simple thing like the western cereal for example he puts on the tables.

I think its great that unlike what he could do and play it safe which is make more kkhh and k3g but instead hes trying kank, dostana etc...why was kank hated i see nothing wrong in that but people could not digest the fact he dealt with people having affairs which happens every day. You know not every marriage has a reason for breaking people do grow apart as much as i hate to say it being good does not make you immune.

I am sure he knows what he is doing...

I think he's damaged the images of NRI folks. 😆 Why are they depicted as racist, sexist and western washed? He's made NRI's into some sort of typecast, and only endorses stereotypes further.

One thing that surprises me about Karan Johar is that he has lived in the UK, or has been to the UK many times since he has an apartment there. But he hasn't been able to capture London properly. For example, K3G was all wrong!! The pom-poms and cheer leaders...that's American style, that's not really part of the British culture. And "whatever" is mostly used in America. Kareena Kapoor's character was not British at all and it semed like he was showing some bimbo from Beverly Hills. The character wasn't Kareena's fault, I blame the director. It's very obvious he didn't do his homework properly. American culture and British culture are quite different and being a Londoner myself, I was shocked to see what Karan Johar was showing in K3G.

Yeah, he does portray NRI's ridiculously. NRIs are prosperous but we are definitely not all millionaires who drive Benzs and Ferraris to work. 😕

I find it hard to believe that a young film-maker in the 21st century can peddle such regressiveness and is getting applauded for making such films. For me, K3G was an insufferable film with busy images that are utterly hollow. Designer clothing and expensive sets that fill the wide screen do nothing to lift the insipid movie. Almost everything about this movie felt so manufactured and fake. There is a complete lack of realism and people seem to cry at every available opportunity. The movie is just all gloss.... there is no substance or soul.

Anyway, the bottom line for K-Jo...all his films are dressed up beautifully but are horrendously bereft of any dramatic or cinematic merit.

Dude, relax. Both films have done historic business, despite being trite films. I won't be knocking down households, but you really can't stop me from sharing my opinion.
As for Aditiya Chopra, I hated DDLJ, but I'll give it credit for being the first of its kind. Mohabatein was just as craptastic, but at least it never attempts to be preachy or shoves a message down our throat. Mindless entertainment. I think you're missing the entire point of this thread, and I'm tired of repeating myself to justify my point.
