Like boosi says, Khemi told Santo to agree to marry Mahesh. Santo looked up to her as the elder sister. But Khemi asked Santo to think about family first. So that should apply to Khemi also.
To those who say love is above everything, have we not been given evidence of Santo slowly falling in love with her husband? So what if her husband is much older? He is her husband after all. It is not just young love that is important. Love between people already married should also be given due place.
Khemi is shocked when Santo tells her she told Nanaji about her and Hiten. Khemi is like, 'Oh my god, you told Nanaji'? What does Khemi expect? That no one should know about her and Hiten? Where do they plan to get married, in Hawaii? This was too good 😆
Also look at how Hiten treats his father and Santo. If Santo is wrong to have slapped her elder sister, is it right of Hiten to disrespect his dad and mock him for marrying Santo? He fully knows why that marriage happened. He knows how much Santo has done for his family and what she had to put up with. Yet, he treats Santo with total disdain. Would Khemi really want to marry a man like that? He seems to have selective amnesia. He conveniently forgot all that Santo has done for him - I would have thought that the whole diamond incident would have earned Santo his respect but no - he is so ungrateful. The way he talked to her is sooooo not done. If I was in Khemi's place and saw how he treated Santo after all she has done for him, I would have shown him the door.
Hiten is no more brave than Kaddu. If he had an iota of self-respect, he would have gone to his father a long time ago and told him about his love for Khemi. He does not care about what his father thinks anyway. So what is keeping him? He wants to wait for Shambu to come to Mahiyavanshi house for the muhurat and then break the 'good news'? I think he is just all talk and no action, I don't think he will say anything until he is forced to. A better person would have gone and told DM the moment they confessed their love to each other if not sooner.
Hiten will tell Shambu 'Really sorry dude that I promised you you will marry Khemi. if my dad had opposed the marriage, I would have taken it as my life's sole project to get you married to her. But as you see, my dad did not oppose it. so I have no reason to support it. Moreover the girl loves me, not you. We just decided to make it official now..really sorry. I hope you find someone nice'!!!! You know, I felt the same thing. If DM had opposed this marriage, Hiten would have moved heaven and earth to make sure that Khemi got married to Shambhu but now that DM has given his consent, he is looking for reasons to antagonize DM and create trouble. His sole purpose in life seems to be antagonizing and being contrary to DM. He badly needs a job, something other than DM to focus on.
Khemi lied to Motiben. As simple as that. 👏👏👏
I will be surprised if Hiten does not come forward to rescue Santo. I doubt he will, he is just too selfish. I remember he just stood by and watched Motiben torcher Santo and DM try to throw her out of the house after the Kaddu incident and did not raise a finger to stop the cruelty. All his chivalrous feelings and sympathy for the downtrodden are solely reserved for Khemi, not for anybody else even though he claims to sympathize with the weaker/poorer.
Am wondering if we are being given a hint here; will Hiten and Khemi turn villains, againtst DM and Santo? I too feel the same - Hiten-Khemi are going to turn negative, all the signs are there.

As for Santo's decision, I think she is right. I know people didn't like that she slapped Khemi, in her place I think I would have given her two instead of one. Sometimes youngsters have to correct elders when they are wrong. And think about how she found out about the two that led to the slap - her older sister who she looked up to was in her stepson's arms two days before her wedding - a wedding that the same sister had consented to and which her stepson had taken the responsibility of seeing through and which she herself had convinced her husband (who btw is not easy to convince) to consent to. And a wedding for which her husband unexpectedly had gone way out of his way - setting up the groom's business so her sister would have a good life, buying her jewellery, taking on all the resposibilities/expenses of the wedding - man, just thinking about it makes me mad - Khemi is so ungrateful.

I do wish she had gone to DM and spilled the beans on these two though and let DM deal with them rather than being selfless and try to save their hides - it's going to come back to bite her.

So far the inappropriateness of H-K relationship (Maasi-Bhanja relationship) has never been taken up. It is all about how Maalik's son can marry a low caste woman and how a marriage which has already been finalised can be stopped at the eleventh hour because it would lead to disgrace of Maalik. that is all we have been hearing from the chaste mouth of Santu.
Coming to low caste lady being married to high caste man, Hiten gave a fitting reply to Santu yesterday. When his father can marry a low caste woman who was young enough to be his daughter, for reasons of so called compulsion, why not he for love?
As to disgrace of a wedding stopped at the eleventh hour, is this the first wedding to be stopped? Was the bridegroom not changed in the case of Santu and later Kaddu? Why not for Khemi? Maalik has already seen worse disgrace in his daughter's wedding. Is his respect more important than his son's happiness? I am sure DM if he knows about this would not consider it so.
But Santu Mahiyavanshi, the self appointed judge decides in her own court without hearing the parties involved or informing the Maalik in question, whose honour she is protecting.

The inappropriateness was brought up - right after Santo found out and dragged Khemi to the room, she told her that she was her sister and Hiten was her son, did Khemi not know that. To this Khemi replied that she knew their relationship but just couldn't help herself (--rolling my eyes--)

I am putting the track back to the original topic by putting in my 2 cents. I do not agree with the way Santu took the decision and justified it to Khemi. When she went to talk to Nanaji why did she not take Khemi along with her and have a joint family discussion? This way both of them could have heard her out. It was after all about Khemi's marraige.

After that Santu did not let Hiten finish whatever it was that he wanted to tell her. If she made the decision in her role as maalkin shouldn't the parties involved be given an opportunity to be heard? And shouldn't the maalik be made aware of what is going the situation? If Santu involved Nanaji as a parent then isn't it DM's right to know as Hiten's father too?

Khemi has already told Santu that she will not be able to forget Hiten and accept Shambhu. A just and fair decision should involve Shambhu too. Why did she not go talk and bring him to the haveli and have a talk with DM present? She is experiencing first hand what it is like to have a spouse whose heart belongs to someone else. Why does she think it would be OK for Shambhu to be in the same situation?

DM has been married twice - the first time to a woman he loved very much and whom he still loves after her death and the second time in a forced marraige to a young girl he is barely beginning to acknowledge in his life but not give her the rights of his wife. He has experienced both types of scenarios. He would have been very angry at first but DM is a just and fair man. He would definitely have heard everyone out before giving his decision.

Santu's unilateral decision was wrong on so many fronts. If Santu had gone about taking the decision in the right way matters would not have come to this stage. The necklace would still be locked in DM's safe.

Hema,
I am not sure we can separate the two- was Santo right versus were Hiten and Khemi right?
Anyway, assuming the question is strictly only about Santo's decision, I am not sure what you are suggesting is practical. Idealistic, yes, good on paper, yes, logical, yes, but is it practical? Calling a family conference, where people sit and debate in a very civilised manner the pros and cons of a decision sounds wonderful but where extreme emotions and family honour are involved, this can be a difficult task.
DM should be informed. Yes. He is Hiten's parent. But I still think Hiten should have gone up to DM, the very morning after Santo found him hugging Khemi and done that.
As for Santo, I honestly am trying to put myself in her shoes. I would have told my husband, yes. But I know this husband for 5-6 months. I have known my sister for 18 yrs. I would hope she understands my point about the impossibility of this alliance and help me and my family (my grandfather especially) by agreeing to this marriage. In Kaddu's case, Kaddu was in love with someone while engaged to someone else. But here Khemi is in love with her step-son, which to be honest, would be deeply embarrasing for any sister. What will people say? 'God knows what values these girls have been given. Nanaji must have done something wrong' etc etc... This is India. Those of us brought up in India know only too well how powerful gossip is. It can destroy lives. the first instinct for anyone, especially an illiterate, young woman would be to make sure the damage is as less as possible, that no one comes to know of the matter, that the sister understands the predicament.... Perhaps Santo is doing that here...
Your suggestion of dragging Khemi to Nanaji's house, calling Shambu for a family meeting, etc just seems very impractical in Indian situation. Plus, are there not restrictions on the movements of a bride after haldi ceremony? Wouldn't Santo want to protect Khemi's name by not dragging her place to place? After all, who knows? May be Khemi will refuse to marry Hiten once she sees how he insults her sister. Then, is it not better that no one saw her go out to see Nanaji or any such thing?
TV serials seem to have an unusual share of women trying to solve all problems. But DM has always been there and he will be here too.
I still believe Hiten will own up to his part in taking the necklace to Khemi.
Just hope Nanaji does not get a heart attack!
