Part 5
Days rolled by,and the ETF was back to their normal functioning.
Cases were solved, criminals were hunted down...blood,sweat
,adrenaline everything was a part of their day. The usual clash of
bosses also continued, along with the familiar banter of the other
members. However, again something happened to break their
monotony.
The ETF office was upgrading their security system and issuing new id
cards to the officers. A lot of detailed forms had to be filled up and
collected. Shree was in charge of getting all the forms from their team
and he found this to be a really tedious job, especially after just having
having solved a complicated case. Nevertheless, he managed to
complete the task and was about to submit the forms, when something
caught his eyes.
The top most form was Arjun's and he was staring at the date of birth
column. He exclaimed softly-"It's his birthday today!"
Chotu,Saakshi and Ayesha looked up in surprise. He passed along
the form. Yes, indeed, today it was. But they all looked at each other
with apprehension, not sure of what to do with the newly found
information. Each of their birthdays was celebrated in small but
beautiful ways, amidst their hectic schedule. No one quite had the time
for parties, but small surprises, cards and wishes were still exchanged.
But with Arjun, even that was a faraway dream.
Had this been a few days earlier,Saakshi would have reacted
differently. She may have tried to make him celebrate it,arranged a
surprise, etc. But after that incident in the meeting room, she had learnt
to restrain herself and avoid using frivolous ways to cheer him up. But
she and the entire team sincerely wanted him to be free of turmoil at
least on this day.
Sameer walked into the room to collect a file. He looked slightly
agitated and did not notice the others all huddled up. Chotu hesitantly
said " Sir..its.. Arjun sir's birthday today...".
" I don't need to be reminded...er...I mean.. what?..so?.. I guess we all
have enough work at hand to focus on" mumbled Rathod.
Ayesha stared silently at him. His first phrase had given him away. He
remembered it,but wanted to deny it and faked surprise. Sameer
caught her knowing glance and just walked away from the room.
His exit marked Arjun's entry.
Arjun had come to return some files and was busy arranging it onto the
racks. The team looked at each other, they so badly wanted to wish him
that they no longer cared if that would make them face his wrath.
And so a meek, but warm "Happy Birthday ,Sir" filled the air.
Arjun sharply turned. They were moved after seeing the expression on
his face. It was neither happiness, nor sorrow, nor anger. It was just
pure surprise. He even unconsciously looked behind his shoulder to
see if it was meant for someone else. It has been so long since he had
heard that phrase that it took time for him to process the meaning. He
shot a glance at the hanging calender and then it sunk in. He had
understandably forgotten the day. Life had ceased to make any sense
a long time ago and he had such memories to deal with that the day
lay unmarked even in his mind's calender.
He immediately wanted to leave the room, but the eager faces of his
team members held him back. Contrary to what they might have
believed, being rude did not come naturally to him. It was just the best
way for him to avoid company. So he knew that his walking away was
not the correct way to reciprocate their genuine wishes. But how could
he explain to them that birthdays held meaning only for people who
were alive. And on that fateful day, though only one corpse was
discovered, two lives had ended. He could not even utter a thank
you, since that would mean acknowledging the wish. And when he
hated his very existence,he could not see what was so happy about
his birth.
Saakshi sensed his predicament and thus intervened saying- " Arjun,I
know you do not want to celebrate the day, which is perfectly fine. But
this is a special day and..."
Arjun interrupted her and again said something which would haunt his
team for long- "It is easy to celebrate any occasion, but difficult to
make it an occasion worth celebrating".
Saying this, he withdrew himself from the room. The ETF members
silently tried to peel off the layers of meaning hidden in his words. And
when they did manage to do so, they were filled with determination.
They did not make lofty promises to make him come out of his
melancholy- but they wanted him to realize that he was special, that his
existence deserved recognition. They did not know how, but they silently
swore to do so.
