Malayalam actor Dileep has walked free after years of litigation, public debate, and intense media attention. On Monday, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court cleared him of all charges in connection with the high-profile 2017 actress assault case, bringing a dramatic chapter of Kerala’s entertainment world to a close.
The decision comes after a long legal battle in which Dileep was accused of plotting the crime and hiring those who carried it out. He was listed as the eighth accused in the case.
A Case That Shook the Industry
The incident, reported in February 2017, involved a well-known actress who was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted inside her vehicle while returning from a shoot. The assault was recorded on a phone, allegedly as blackmail material.
Investigators named Pulsar Suni, or Sunil NS, as the key perpetrator in the assault. Alongside him, multiple men, including Martin Antony, Manikandan B, Vijeesh VP, Salim H (also known as Vadival Salim), Pradeep, Charly Thomas, Sanilkumar alias Mesthiri Sanil, and G Sarath, faced trial under severe IPC sections. The charges ranged from criminal conspiracy and abetment to kidnapping, rape, assault, intimidation, and destruction of evidence.
A Trial Full of Twists and Delays
The proceedings were anything but straightforward. The trial officially started in March 2018 and stretched over years, marked by dramatic turns both inside and outside the courtroom.
More than 260 witnesses were examined, including prominent names from the film fraternity. Of them, 28 turned hostile. Two special public prosecutors resigned midway, prompting delays. The prosecution submitted over 800 documents and more than 140 material exhibits, while the defence brought forward over 200 documents. Recording witness statements alone took 438 days.
Appeals from multiple parties added further layers to the already complicated timeline, making it one of the longest and most scrutinised criminal trials in Malayalam cinema history.
What Comes Next?
With the court ruling in his favour, Dileep is now free of legal charges, but the spotlight is far from fading. The verdict has set the stage for mixed reactions within the industry and among the public.
Whether this moment marks a return to full-fledged stardom for Dileep or the beginning of a new public conversation on justice, accountability, and celebrity remains to be seen.
