Part 3
Back in the ETF meeting room, the team was busy clearing up the spill
on the table. But they ended up increasing the mess by their inability to
focus. So after having more files dropped and cups broken they
actually decided to just sit down for a while and obtain some clarity of
thought.
It had been more than a year since Arjun joined the team. And his
entry was not entirely frictionless. It was tough adjusting to his
rude, reckless, out of the box methods of investigation. But they had to
admit that his brilliance, his passion, his instincts, his sharp mind had
won them over. They were in awe of him and had almost found him to
be invincible. And that is why they found it hard to believe that
someone had actually manged to scar him for life. They were vaguely
aware of his past, but never quite indulged in getting details for the
sake of professionalism and also because no one really likes hearing
unpleasant stories. Moreover they all had their own problems, their
personal battles to fight. But today when they saw a tangible form of
the wreckage caused in Arjun's life, they could not help but be moved.
As colleagues, as team mates, as just fellow humans.
Each one was lost in exploring their individual equation with Arjun.
Shree and Chotu could not look into each others eyes as they recalled
how they hated working under Arjun and the innumerable times they
had made fun of his anger, his workings, his personality. Just the other
day they had referred to the bandage on his hand as his style
statement. And now they began to see that their socially challenged
second in command was actually wounded beyond imagination.
Saakshi perhaps was lost in deeper thoughts. She had recognized the
pain in Arjun's eyes on the very first day of her work, yet could not
gauge the depth of his abyss. She recalled all those moments where
she accused him of being rude, arrogant, dictatorial; the moments
where she kept on pressing him to smile,to be cheerful, to enjoy life
without realizing that there was no life left in him.His mere survival was
already a miracle. She was self critical of the fact that she actually
assumed that flowers, cutting chai, jokes could help him bounce
back, when all they did was remind him more of all what was missing in
his life. She bit her lip thinking about that fake injury. How on earth
could she have played with the one emotion which was already engulfing
a part of his soul every moment-guilt?
She knew that her intentions were noble, she had no selfish interests
hidden in helping Arjun vent out his angst,it was purely out of genuine
concern she felt for him. But she knew she had been immature in
executing her purpose and was brave enough to accept it.
Aisha had to practically admit that there was nothing they could do,but
sincerely wished that there was someway in which they could help the
man get justice..She was silently admiring the resilience of the man.
She could not imagine if the physical marks were so gory, how badly
must he be bleeding within. And all along he did not glorify his
tragedy, never sought to become a victim in the eyes of others. He had
heroically endured it all alone and was ready to do so for the rest of his life.
At that very moment Shree voiced a concern which everyone had-"Will
we be able to interact with him as before?"
For a moment everyone was pensive. Aisha responded with
confidence- "Yes we will. Arjun sir needs our support, not sympathy.
The least we can do for him is be a bit more sensitive and give him his
space. We have always respected him,can we now respect his grief?."
Everyone agreed with a smile. The ETF team was not called special
without reason. This team was destined to be a part of Arjun's life and it
would always stand by him, irrespective of his own will.
Part 4
Had Arjun heard this conversation,he would have been much relieved.
Because while sitting alone on the beach,he was dreading facing his
team again. Being an object of pity was the last thing he wanted. There
was a reason behind keeping the old wound still under wraps. For it
had only been cured but never quite healed. For him it was not just a
memento of his tragedy,it was a proof of his failure, his defeat. And
being stripped off his veil in front of his team filled him with some
strange sort of shame. His self respect, and not his ego had been hurt.
But he could not deny that he suddenly felt lighter. He knew that no
one could provide him the solace, but the others in spite of being mere
spectators today, were nevertheless a part of the scene now. The door
he had shut long ago had cracked slightly, and he could not help
thanking Saakshi for helping him share his pain with others without the
aid of words.
A little boy building a sand mansion, suddenly caught his eyes. He
observed the love with which the boy carved each corner of his
house, oblivious of the threatening waves. And when he did notice the
approaching wave,he confidently put his arms around the house
thinking that would save it. Arjun squeezed shut his eyes and looked
away for he very well knew what was about to happen. He was all too
familiar with this as he too had witnessed his world being swept away
right in front of his eyes. And like the naive boy he was confident that
his able arms would always manage to repel any danger. No one
needed to remind him of the price he had to pay for this assumption.
The sun was beginning to set and Arjun found himself to be staring
blankly at his receding shadow. His lips twirled into a strange sort of a
smile. He realized that his shadow was what had been giving him
company all along the years. And he wanted to express his
gratitude to it, for being the only one to have not accused him..to have
not disbelieved him.,,to have not abandoned him.
He sighed and tried to divert his thoughts. He hated indulging in self
pity, but today he was being drawn into the web of self reflection. He
looked up into a sky. And his eyes met a fleet of birds retuning to their
nests. He felt an acute pang of pain in his chest as he recalled those
lost evenings when he too looked forward to returning home. He
lamented over the fact that life never gave him a warning before
changing forever. There were so many moments he had taken for
granted not knowing that their days were numbered in his life. He
strained to remember, there surely must have been a last normal day
in his life...a last happy meal...a last movie he enjoyed...a last song he
hummed..a last joke he cracked...a last gift he bought..a last festival he
celebrated..a last holiday he relaxed..a last pleasant dream he had...
How did his existence come to this..
He had to snap out of his musings because they were beginning to
overwhelm him. He got up and started walking towards the
roaring sea. The steps he took were assertive yet measured and they
came to an abrupt halt. He looked without blinking into the intimidating waves
and thought...had there not been the fire still burning in his heart, the
task still incomplete, the wound still fresh,...no one could have stopped him from walking straight into the heart of the sea.
And he turned and walked back to the shore. To the place where he
belonged for now.
