Part 2
Sameer paced vigorously in his office, unable to fathom why he was so disturbed. Nothing of Arjun's past was hidden from him. In spite of his grudge,he always identified with Arjun's pain. So why was he so uncomfortable now. Flashes of the past whirled before his eyes. He had gone to visit Arjun at the hospital after the tragic death of Roshini. But his rage had prevented him from seeing his wounds. He had noticed the bandage on Arjun's hand from the very beginning but never considered asking him about it. After all, police officers with injuries is nothing exceptional. But today he was forced to see that the bandage did not conceal an ordinary injury. It contained a signature,a stamp of the brutal fate which did not just rip apart his hand,it mutilated his heart, his happiness, his LIFE.
And today,Sameer could not hold himself back. He walked into Arjun's office and saw him standing by the window. He could see Arjun's eyes welling up with tears and just walked up to him. Arjun blinked his grief away but did not dare look into Sameer's eyes. He knew he would not be able to contain himself further.
Sameer was unsure about how to start a conversation and acknowledged the irony of the situation. Two friends who found 24 hours not enough for their banter, were now at a loss of words to convey essential things.
Sameer- "Rawte.."
The tenderness in the tone made Arjun's head turn towards him. For a change the accusatory eyes had warmth in it. The ice was almost about to be broken when Arjun suddenly recalled their past interactions..Sameer shouting at him at Roshini's shraad, his refusal to accept Sikander's existence, his anger and disdain..Arjun's face hardened up. Sameer noticed the change and completely understood it too. Sameer closed his eyes in helplessness. How could he explain to Arjun the reason behind his actions, the complications of seeking Sikander. Arjun shrugged and began to walk away, when Sameer called from behind.
"Try to understand, Arjun.. Put yourself in my place..."
Arjun was silent for a while and then in a voice loaded with care, love, concern and grief he said-
"I would happily put myself in your place, but even in your dreams I would not want you to be in my place"
Words were scarce yet they conveyed a lot. As Sameer watch him walk away,he knew that momentarily both their masks had come off. Tomorrow,it would be back to usual business. Arjun would never leave his obstinate quest, and he was bound my duty to hold him back.
But he felt happy about the fact that though he could not lend Arjun his shoulder today, by walking up to Arjun he assured him of his constant presence alongside as Arjun walked the path of thorns.
