My dear Kunchu,
At times there is something to be said for reading 3 chapters at one go. One has a feeling of continuity and of forward motion.
This time, you have brought the story to a sharp turning point, like something perched on the edge of a cliff, with a strong wind blowing from behind. After reaching the end of this chapter, there was only one question in my mind, Riya knows nothing about the looming threat to her, but Arjun is very well aware of it and he takes it very seriously. How then does he let her go to the ladies' room all by herself, instead of accompanying her till the door and standing guard outside? He knows full well what Sikandar is capable of, so how is he so careless? This is probably what can only be classified as 'fate'.
But the passage I liked the best was when Sikandar comes to Roshni's house and cries his heart out on her shoulder. The next one was when, after having stabbed her, he tries desperately to save her and get her to a hospital.
Kunchu, you have managed something not attempted anywhere else in this forum that I have seen, to humanise a character who was till now a faceless, dyed in the wool villain, evil incarnate with no shades of anything else. By showing his deep and totally genuine love for Roshni - no matter that it is a maniacally jealous love that in the end destroys it very object - you have lent him an almost tragic dimension.
It might have been one sided, and it might, when frustrated, have turned into something totally destructive, but it was love. If Arjun had never turned up, Roshni would most likely have married Sikandar in due course, and continued to work with her NGO while also raising a family, with Sikandar forging ahead in his career and being blissfully happy with her and their kids.
But that was not to be, and like Lucifer, Son of the Morning, who became a fallen angel and turned into Satan, so also does Sikandar, Roshni's dear friend, turn into a murderous changeling, like one of the distorted images one sees in trick mirrors. A man devoured by raging jealousy, who destroys the woman he loves rather than let her belong to another. This is an archetype that is common in literature, but I never expected to meet it here. Congratulations!
Shyamala Aunty
