Shivaraj Tangadagi, Karnataka's Minister for Kannada and Culture, has reacted strongly to Kamal Haasan's controversial statement that Kannada evolved from Tamil. Tangadagi has warned that if Haasan doesn't apologize publicly, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) will ban his film 'Thug Life' in Karnataka. This action highlights the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities and regional languages in the film industry.
According to a PTI report, Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi commended the KFCC's swift action in Bengaluru. He stated that no individual, regardless of their fame, would be permitted to disrespect the Kannada language, culture, or the people of Karnataka. The minister underscored the government's unwavering support for the Kannada community, vowing to take a firm stance against any remarks deemed offensive towards the language or its speakers. He affirmed that if Kamal Haasan fails to offer an apology, his films will be banned within Karnataka.
Tangadagi said, I have written a letter. After that, the film chamber of commerce also took a good decision and held a press meet yesterday saying that if he doesn’t apologise in two days, his film will be banned. I extend my compliments to the film chamber of commerce as the Minister for Kannada and Culture.
Additionally, the minister revealed that he had reached out to Kannada superstar Shivarajkumar, urging him to utilize his standing as a senior actor to engage with Kamal Haasan and facilitate a resolution to the matter. He said, “We cannot tolerate it. Let Shivarajkumar or another senior actor speak to him.
In the meantime, Kamal Haasan maintained his position. He asserted his belief in law and justice, emphasizing his sincere affection for Karnataka. He declined to apologize unless presented with conclusive evidence to the contrary, and he also noted that he had previously encountered threats.
Addressing the controversy over his "Tamil gave birth to Kannada" comment at a Thug Life event, Kamal Haasan stated he would apologize only if he was wrong, while also requesting that others not "tamper" with his lifestyle as the situation escalated.
If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle, please don’t tamper with it, the Nayakan actor told India Today. He added, “India is a democratic country, and I believe in law and justice.
Kamal Haasan responded to the controversy surrounding his statement at a Thug Life event, where he asserted that "Tamil gave birth to Kannada." He clarified that he would only apologize if he acknowledged his statement to be incorrect, and he also requested that others refrain from interfering with his personal life as the issue gained momentum.
