Veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, known for changing the face of mainstream Hindi cinema with iconic films like Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots, recently got candid about how success transforms people, often not for the better. In a no-holds-barred interview, the acclaimed director-producer opened up about the harsh truths of Bollywood, fame, and why he still prefers to work with “nobodies.”
Reflecting on his long journey in the film industry, Chopra didn’t shy away from stating that success often shifts people’s personalities. 'Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, and Boman Irani all worked with me early in their careers,' he shared, adding that with fame comes a change in how people behave. 'Once they become successful, they change. That’s why I like people who are nobodies, because when you become somebody, you don’t remain the same person,' he said, striking a chord with those familiar with the industry’s ever-changing equations.
Chopra’s comments didn’t stop at actors. He also took a sharp jab at the current state of filmmaking in Bollywood. According to him, today’s producers and directors care more about box office numbers than about storytelling or passion for the craft.
'No one wants to create for the joy of creating anymore. It’s all about the Rs 400 crore mark, and suddenly people start walking differently,' he remarked, recounting a story of a producer he once worked with whose attitude took a complete turn after delivering a hit.
Ironically, Chopra himself has faced similar criticism in the past. Actor Paresh Rawal once accused him of changing after the success of Munna Bhai MBBS, which ultimately led Rawal to reject a role in the film.
Despite all the industry noise, Chopra continues to walk his own path. His most recent directorial venture 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey, won both hearts and high praise. The film stood out not just for its gripping narrative but also for its grounded storytelling and sincerity, a rare combination in today’s commercial landscape.
At 72, Vidhu Vinod Chopra remains a voice that doesn’t fear speaking the truth, even if it ruffles a few feathers. And perhaps, that’s exactly what makes his cinema and his candour so timeless.
