Also, I would like to add onto this- the free bird may not be as free as it thinks it is and the caged bird may not be as indebted to its owners as it thinks it is. Just like a free bird often has to fly carefully to avoid hurting themselves from human made objects, Abir too is not fully independent as he may think. He is bound by his past where his father left him. The lack of love that he feels even in the presence of his family does not make him feel free completely. On the other hand, Mishti, the caged bird, believes she is indebted to her owners and they have the right to decide everything for her. But, just like owners who don't mind their bird flying away to a shorter distance if that's what is best for the bird, Mishti's adoptive parents also want her to fly without making her feel like they are the clutches holding her back. I believe, freedom is an illusion.

THANK YOU🤗I totally agree with what you said.Abir and Mishti both are bounded to somebody or something.Nobody can be absolutely free.

Abir and Mishti:Two birds(Part 4)

Abir was a free bird which hated to be put in a cage.He has always dreamt about flying high and free. “Always” means since when? Well probably since he came to know the meaning of flying. A wanderer by nature who could do anything just to gaze at the birds in the sky. Well was it his fault that he took birth as a human being and not a bird. He often thought about freedom and liberty. What was the exact meaning of the word? Was it to be not bounded by chains? Was it to be not anyone’s slave? Was it to be able to say what you want without any fear? Or was it to be able to live your life the way you want? A life where no one can interfere.

Mishti was like a bird born in human captivity. She had never experienced freedom. To her life meant being bounded in a cage. More unfortunately her condition was like a bird whose owners suddenly did not want it anymore. Just like a caged bird is sold to any person interested in buying it it seemed that it was the same case with her. Rejected by her family, her own parents, labelled as a criminal’s daughter or more surprisingly a criminal herself. It’s not that she didn’t receive love. She got love from the mos tunexpected ones, the ones whom she barely knew, whom she never considered a part of her family. She even got the freedom to fly but didn’t have the courage to take a leap of faith. It was almost as if god was pitying her for her more than worst condition and so gave her a little happiness. What was her fault? Why did she have to face all this? Why was she abandoned by her own family? Why was she labelled a criminal’s daughter? Was it her fault that she was born there? Was it her fault that her father was a criminal? Was it her fault that her mother remarried and never came back for her? Was it her fault that she was a human being? What was her fault? Why did she have to bear the consequences of other’s doings? Why was life playing games with her? These are some questions nobody has answers for. Or is it that nobody wants to give any. She was labelled, talked of by everyone but nobody really had the reason.

The two personalities who may not be more different than one another. Can the free bird make the caged bird realise what freedom is? Or will the caged bird never come out of the cage of fear, of shame, of guilt. Can the free bird make the caged bird fly high or will the caged bird succumb to her fears? Can the free bird make the caged bird lead a life of joy? Or will the caged bird always be in the confinement of her sadness and sorrow.

Hope you all will like it.Please do comment.Criticisms and suggestions are more than welcome.

Wowwww...

I just read part 4...what parallels you have drawn.... superb...

But the free bird has to tone down and the caged bird has to let loose for a perfect balance!

Part 5:Booklover

It has been a few days since Mishti joined the school. She had started taking part actively in the classes. She is good in studies, it seemed from her answers in the classes. She never talked to anyone. She only spoke when she was spoken to or asked any question. In the class also she never asked any question on her own. If she didn’t understand anything she went to the teacher during a free period to clear her doubts. In the games class or recess when everyone was busy in playing or gossiping she sat in one corner with a book and was engrossed in reading it. It didn’t seem that she was dumb based on the smart answers she gave to the witty and twisted questions the teachers asked.

Abir was perplexed. “Strange girl” he thought. “Neither she talks with anyone nor she plays with anyone. Saara din bas padhti rehti hai.Maybe she wants to acquire the knowledge of the whole world. Padhaku chashmish”Abir used to think all this while looking at her. While observing her closely he realised that she was not as studious as he thought. Most of the time she used to read very thick story books of the library. “So she is a booklover”Abir said to himself. But the books she read were not the usual ones the girls of their class read. It was not “Queen of teens”, “Dates and mates series”, “Chicken soup series” and so on which seemed to be the favourites of the girls because of the teenage love stories they had. She was nor a fan of the fiction series like“Harry Potter” or “Percy Jackson”. Can you even think what she read all the time? Mythological and historical fiction written by contemporary authors. “She is really crazy. I mean which class 8 student reads Chanakya’s Chant? History books were not enough or what. An apart from that she also reads Amish Triparthy’s books. I mean seriously! Shiva trilogy’s books’ covers are so scary. How could someone even read that?”

One day the history teacher was absent and no other teacher came to substitute the class. As usual the world famous junglee class 8A students started their junglee antics. Mishti was however oblivious to the fishmarket like conditions of the class. She was lost in her own world while reading Aswin Sanghi’s Chanakya’s Chant. “What is there in the book?” Abir thought. He gathered enough courage to ask Mishti about it.

Abir:Mishtiiii

Mishti:Yes

Abir:Why don’t you ever talk to anyone in the class?

Mishti:But I am talking to you.

Abir:Not about that. You never talk to anyone on your own. I mean look at the class. Everyone is busy talking and chatting to each other.

Mishti:And what does that do other than creating disturbance to others?

Abir:No no, I didn’t mean to say that. I mean you always seem to be out of the class and in your own world. Leave that. Why do you always keep reading? Do you love reading? What type of books do you like?

Mishti:So many questions! Let me answer one by one. I love reading and so always keep reading books in free time instead of talking to others. Books are our best friends. They never leave us like people (She said with a hint of sadness)

Abir: Eh! What did you say.In mind “She again went in her own world of philosophy all thanks to the thick books she keep reading.”

Mishti(realising what she blurted out):Forget that. You were asking about the books I read?

Abir:As far as I noticed you mostly read Mytho-fiction and historical fiction. You don’t like other genres?

Mishti:It’s not that. Now a days I am reading these two genres. I like real life situation stories as well. A few days ago I read “The small blue thing” series. It was of fantasy genre. I like trying different genres but the two you mentioned are my favourites. I also like human relation stories and books from different authors across the globe. Reading those books helps us to know about the culture of other lands. Do you know Meghan Nuttel Sayres? Sheis one of my favourite authors.

Abir(in mind):My goodness! How did this miracle happen? Yeh toh Miss Only two words a day se Miss Chatterbox bangayi.

Abir:Oh. By the way what was the plot of the book you were reading now?

Mishti(showing a book):This one?

Abir:Yes. This one.

Mishti:It is a political novel about how an itellegent and witty brahmin Pandit Gangasagar Mishra changes the politics of India by following the ideals of Chanakya.

Abir:Oh!

Abir(in mind):Oh this is more dangerous than Chanakya’s teachings in the history book. Theory padke itna bore hote hai. Practical kaisa hoga?

Abir:Mishti, you don’t like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson?

Mishti:I read all the books of Harry Potter series but I am not too fond of it. I like Percy Jackson because I am very much interested in Greek Mythology.Actually I try all the genres. I even like mystery and thrillers like "Krishna Key", "City of dead", "Alchemist" and so on. What about your choices? You don't like books?

Abir:Yes,I do. But I am more into classics such as Shakespeare. I also like light hearted stories, comedies and stories about humanity.

Mishti:Oh then you should try reading "P.S. I love you" It's a little sad but you will like reading it. i forgot the name of the author. She is an Irish lady. The book is there in the library.

Abir:Ok, I'll definately try it. You seem to know a lot about books.

Mishti:Yeah. Actually I spent most of my time reading. I don't like mixing with people very much. Books provide the best past time you know.

Abir:Yeah. I'll surely try to read the book you suggested. Can you tell me its premise.

They started discussing about books and the discussion went on for long. Perhaps she is not so strange after all. This tete a tete changed Abir's perspective about Mishti. He understood that there is a lot more hidden in her.

Asmi, this is so well written! The way you wrote Mishti being aloof with her books and Abir's conversation with her about it reminded me of Rory and Dean's first conversation from the Gilrmore Girls. Also, I loved the fact that Mishti turned out to be someone who is interested in various kinds of books whether factual or historic or fiction. Abir liking books which fall more on art and literature makes your story so much in connect with the show. At the end, Mishti asks him to read P.S. I love you is so cute and touching. It basically goes on to show how much Mishti is actually affected by loss/absence of loved ones in her life.

If you ask me about the best part in terms of story, I think this one bags that title. But if you ask me the best part in terms of analysis of characters then the piece that you had written before this one on free bird vs caged bird was the best one!

Please write more.
