Part 1
Ruhi's mid term vacation was on and the Bhalla family were planning a visit to their native place for a week's vacation. Raman pulled out the moment they planned. A week's break was out of question for him. He said he would come for a day or two just before their return and then they could come back together. Though he asked Ishita to also accompany them, oblivious to all including him, his heart continuously hoped that she also stayed back with him. That way, he would also get to spend some lone time with her.
As if answering his prayers, she immediately spoke up, "mummy ji, Raman akele yahaan?? Nahi, main bhi saath rukhti hoom na?"
Ruhi immediately screamed, "Ishimaaa pls aap aa jaao na...aapke behair main kaise chalungi?"
Raman mentally scolded Ruhi, "yeh Ruhi bhi na...humesha Ishima ke pallu pakadke chalthi phirthi hai...Jhansi ki rani ne mere beti ko bigaad diya!"
But outwardly, he mocked Ishita's offer to stay back, "haan haan...chali jao Ishima...main akela hi teek hoom...baccha nahi hoom, samjhi? Waise bhi ek hafta tumaare lecture se chutkaara jo milega mujhe!"
Ishita pouted at his taunt and then spoke up to Ruhi, "main try karungi baby...School vacation time pe hi bohat saare appointments hote hai!"
Raman's heart sprung up at that but his mouth spoke up a different language, "haaan jaise sheher main koyi aur acchi dentist hi nahi na?"
She showed a funny face and stormed into the room leaving the others to discuss about the vacation.

A week passed away in a blur and the family went away for a week long vacation. Though Ishita had tried her best to go with Ruhi and the family, she couldn't cancel the appointments. So she had to cancel her trip and stay back much to the relief of Raman. Even then, he mocked her, "appointment ka bahaana accha tha...saaf saaf kyun nahi kehti ke mere saath time spend karna hai!"
She frowned and replied, "Ewww time spend?? Aur woh bhi aap se?? Aap yahaan beitke khwaab dekho, main chali clinic"
Saying that, she walked out of the house leaving him grinning! He couldn't wonder why he was playing this double sided game. His heart was beaming in joy at the thought of her being with him but he was posing just the opposite when before her. The conflicting emotions and gestures thrilled him perhaps!
The same evening, Raman came home and the dead silence made him assume that she wasn't home yet. He switched on the lights and dialled her number. She didn't pick it up. Assuming it to be some emergency at the clinic, he walked into his room thinking that he should probably order dinner. But the plates and dishes on the dining table told him a different story altogether.
The lights were dim in his room and he couldn't help mocking as he entered, "ek mauka nahi chodthi na??
But her curled up form on the couch told him that she was not well. He swiftly went across to her enquiring, "kya hua? Tabiyat teek hai na?"
He was about to touch her forehead when she opened her eyes and got up in a startle muttering, "aap aagaye?"
He caught her shoulders mid way and forced her back to the couch, "If you are not well, just stay there..."
"I am alright Raman" she was up the next moment but Raman had already understood that she wasn't well. Something was wrong but what?
Before he could ask anything more, she spoke up, "aap freshen up hoke aa jaao...dinner karthe hai!"
He tried to stop her but she just walked away ignoring him. Now he was sure that she was upset and that's why she wasn't facing his questions but he would find out soon.
Freshening up he walked to the dining table. The dinner was a silent affair but he kept observing her body language. She was in pain for sure. Off late, he could read her through always.
"Ishita, I know you aren't fine...kya baat hai?"
She shrugged his question away as she cleared the table and then the kitchen, "kuch nahi hai Raman...aap bewajeh pareshan ho rahe ho"
He wasn't the one to leave it so easily, "ab keh bhi dho yaar...itna akkad kis baat ka? Warna abi chalo Doctor ke paas..."
He held her hand and tugged her but she pulled back and replied, "maine davaa le li hai...I will be fine"
"So my guess was right...you aren't fine now, hai na?"
His question caught her off guard and he urged her again. She replied turning away, "samjho na Raman...its quite embarrassing to discuss this with you!"
But Raman was insistent, "aisa kya problem hai ke tum mujhse discuss nahi kar sakthi...accha socho ke main tumaare woh restaurant waali friend Rama hoom"
She posed a defeated look and blurted out forgetting that he is before her, "its that time of the month...meri cycles irregular bhi hai...isiliye bohat dard hota hai..."
Yes it was an embarrassing matter to discuss with him but then he could see that she was physically and emotionally drained out by this. She added, "thoda upset hoom because it reminds me of my disability Raman..."
Though she had held it back initially, she had indeed wished to pour it out to him and when she did say to him, she felt relieved.
She took a deep breath, "khair, yeh sab meri life ke problems hai...I have to live with it...aapko pareshan nahi karna chahti..."
She went into the room leaving him a little annoyed. The last sentence irked him endlessly, "Meri life ki problems? Samajhti kya hai Jhansi ki rani...mahaan bannthi phirthi hai!"
But he didn't want to pursue the argument on that front at this time and upset her further.
He went to the room and saw her settling on the couch. He suggested in concern, "tum bed pe so jao Ishita...wahaan comfortable nahi hogi"
She shook her head in denial, "no its ok Raman...I have adjusted myself to the couch Raman...harr baar couch se bed aur phir waapas couch pe jaane se mujhe zyaadha taqleef hoti hai!"
She had indirectly hinted how he pushed her back to the couch once her hand injury was fine.
She covered herself with the blanket and closed her eyes leaving no scope for a further conversation. He chided himself for being so insensitive to her.
He hadn't once sensed her agony and pain all these months. In the brief conversation, he could see through all her pains and her immense sorrow over her disability to become a mother.
The next few hours and the next day too spent on the internet and other sources on the best treatment for infertility. He had limited knowledge about her problems but with what he knew, he made some searches and fixed an appointment with the best gynaec in the city.
At the clinic, he sat before the gynaec who looked at him in both awe and amusement when he said that he didn't bring his wife as he didn't want to depress her further. He said that he wanted to know if there are chances for her to become a mother even before he brings her there for consultation.
She smiled and then replied, "I can understand your concern for your wife and I am really impressed Mr Raman but things don't work this way...mujhe pehle aapke wife se milna padega...unnke kuch tests lena padega...then I will be able to tell you if there are chances...or atleast bring the previous reports..."
Raman smacked himself mentally for his over enthusiasm to find out things. Taking his silence as his nod to bring the reports, she probed further, "waise kitne saal hogaye aapke shaadi ka?"
He replied instantly, "six months"
That surprised her beyond words and she smiled at his over eagerness to become a father, "bas itna hi...you have lots of time Mr Raman...aaj kal medical science itna advanced hai ke complicated cases of infertility bhi treat kar sakthe hai...so don't worry..."
He nodded and was about get up when she asked, "How many months have you been trying for a baby?"
Now that question totally stumped him and he sank back into the chair while she went on unaware of his state and thoughts, "I suggest you try naturally for a few more months...Phir bhi agar nahi hua toh phir sochte hai..."
He had no choice but nod to that also and left the clinic. As he drove back home, only one thing resonated in his mind, "ab iss baat ko Jhansi ki rani se kaise kahoom?"
[To be continued]
So how was it? pls do reply
