Part 4
It just slipped from his mouth in fury, "of course mera kaam hai! Without me, how do you plan to have a baby? Tum dentist hi ho na? koyi magician toh nahi jo abracadabra kahogi toh baccha aa jaayega, huh?"
She was speechless and bewildered completely. What was he even saying? Is this what he was trying to tell her and also trying so far?
*********************************
"Baccha?" she jerked and sat up on the bed, startled by what he said. The tensed and horrified look on her face irritated him like hell. He scowled back in annoyance but she stood baffled not able to comprehend anything at all.
He looked at her shocked form as if he was seeing an alien creature. He mocked, "arre baccha kaha...tum aise react kar rahi ho jaise maine koyi bomb phoda ho...You are the one who asked for it...ab jab main initiative le raha hoom toh tum peeche hatt rahi ho...Whats wrong with you?"
She didn't know how to react to this. Her husband was trying to get intimate with her or perhaps he was all set to have a baby with her. Should she get happy, angry or laugh out at this man who was fortunately or unfortunately her husband? She sarcastically replied, "Wait a minute! Don't tell me you are taking Ruhi's demand for a sister seriously? Sirf Ruhi keliye mujhse shaadi kiya aur ab Ruhi keliye mujhse baccha chahte hai, huh?"
That undid all patience inside him, "Ruhi keliye nahi...yeh tumaare liye hai...tumhe baccha chahiye tha..."
She shot back in anger, "When did I even ask you this Raman??? You are speaking as if I was begging you for a baby"
"jabse hum miley hai, tumaara ek hi paat laga rehta hai...'I can never be a mother...woh khushi main kabhi nahi deh sakthi...etc etc etc'...I mean it was obvious ke tum maa banna chahthi ho...tumaare woh expressions dekh ke koyi bhi andha aadhmi samajh letha...So obviously I had to understand...itna sensible toh main hoom...ek tum hi nahi ho jo sabke khushi ke baare mein sochthi ho...tumaare khushi isi mein thi, toh maine bhi socha ke..."
His talk was making her boil more in anger, "Socha ke ek ehsaan karlen, right? Bechaari Ishita, usspe taras khaake ek help kartha hoom...ek baccha deh deta hoom...Great!"
She wasn't stopping her talk and he was silently fuming hearing her sarcasm.
His glaring eyes could have burned her down without a word but she continued undeterred by his angry stares. She concluded saying, "I am Ruhi's Ishima...aur mere liye yahi bohat badi khushi hai...mujhe ek aur baccha, woh bhi aapke ehsaan se nahi chahiye...samjhe aap?"
He knew that this would end like this, the moment he realized the misunderstanding that crept between them and when the argument hit off the wrong way. So it wasn't a surprise for him, neither did he want this fight to proceed. So he casually shrugged off controlling the rage that was inside him, "Wahi toh maine bhi kaha ke if u dont want, neither do I...ab tumaara lecture khatam hua toh main so jaavum? I have early meetings tomorrow...Good night!"
Saying that, he pulled out a prescription and some strips of medicines from the side table's draw and thrust it into her hands, "tumaare stomach pain aur baaki problems keliye doctor ne diya tha...take it if you want to...else just trash it!"
He didn't wait for a reply but just sank back into the bed, switching off the night lamp on his side.
She muttered a whatever' and turned to the opposite direction with the medicines that he thrusted into her palms. She was angry for sure because he made it all seem like a big favour he was doing for her but she was also hurt about the fight and her angry reply to him.
Deep inside both knew that this was never a favour but something that they were both wishing. When Ruhi mentioned about a sibling, a desire to have a baby of their own had somehow crept into their minds which even they were quite oblivious to or was pretending ignorance. Human ego was indeed a devil in relationships and theirs was a special case which had to be handled with a lot of care. One wrong word or move could bring it down like a pack of cards. They would never part ways but would definitely be reduced to become just Ruhi's parents from whatever special bond they shared at this moment. It was indeed vulnerable atleast till the point they acknowledged their growing love for each other and take their relationship to the next level from where there would be no looking back or regrets.
Even in her angry mindstate, she couldn't ignore what he said. So she read the prescription and saw that the doctor had adviced some iron tablets and also folic acid, probably for her irregular periods. There was a light pain killer too which can be taken if there is unbearable pain.
She mellowed down considerably and looked at Raman's side. She knew he was damn angry but then what could she do? Her self respect was being dented by such attitudes and talks from him. But she knew that he was too much concerned for her and did all this out of concern. Even then, her self pride was at stake and at no cost could she allow him to tear it apart like this.
How she wished that he had wholeheartedly told her that he has fallen in love with her and wanted to make her his wife in all meanings! She was faintly aware of it but then refused to accept it without a confession from him.
She was ready with the reply to her own questions, "Mummy ji teek kehte hai...pyar bhi aise karthe hai jaise laat maar raha ho..."
Her anger was fully gone and she couldn't control a chuckle at whatever happened. She surprised herself because she was neither angry nor did she feel shy and embarrassed after such an awkward situation and heated arguments on such a topic.
Next morning, the lull continued and both refused to talk first and break the silent mode.
"Let her talk first" thought Raman while she thought the other way round. Morning coffee, breakfast, all passed by in silence.
Both leave for their day as always and their conversation merely confined to a understanding nod or gesture to bid bye to each other.
Ishita was in her consulting room when her phone rang. She picked it up without knowing who it was. It was from the clinic of the gynae calling her up to remind her about bringing the reports and also some tests before the second follow-up visit. She was confused at first and wondered why they were calling but then she realized that Raman had registered her name there and it was the clinic's routine procedure to take such tests and also remind about the follow-up visits.
Ishita didn't know what to do. Either she had to ignore the call or may be talk to Raman and find out what to do. Or perhaps go and meet the gynaec personally. She pushed away the first 2 options and chose the 3rd one.
As she sat for her turn to meet the gynaec, her mind pondered over the sudden turn of events. Till yesterday, she had never even thought about such a thing but here she was to meet the doctor for whatever reason it was. She wasn't sure of what she was going to ask the doctor or what brought her to the clinic.
"Mrs Ishita Raman Bhalla"
Her name was called out and she walked in hesitantly, her mind sea sawing between meeting the doctor and going back without meeting.
But she walked straight in and the doctor smiled and offered her a seat. The doctor was very straightforward about what she felt about the whole case. She didn't miss to mention about Raman's concern and worries for Ishita which kind of deeply touched her. Even her eyes blurred with an unshed tear when the doctor said about how particular Raman was about not hurting his wife at any cost. He didn't want any emotional worries for her or give her false hopes without being very sure about the treatment. He was rough and tough from outside but inside, he was full of love, care and concern for her. He really had a stone wall built around his soft delicate heart where he allowed none to enter. Perhaps he was scared of another heart break or betrayal of trust. She had to work her way to break open the wall and reach his heart.
The doctor went on with the possibilities of conceiving and the various stages of treatments but Ishita's mind was elsewhere, possibly lingering around her husband.
The gynaec concluded, "So Ishita, we have to start with some blood tests and scans..."
When she sensed that Ishita was lost somewhere, she misinterrupted it as her worry over not able to conceive and patted her hand consolingly, "I can understand your mind state Ishita...but trust me...maine bohat se cases dekhe hai aur 90% success bhi hua hai...You are very young and there is a fair chance of treating the blockage and conceiving...We just need to start the treatments at the right time..."
Ishita snapped out and nodded. The doctor went on, "tests, scans, treatments sab ek taraf chalta rahega but your happy mindstate is the most important...you have to be calm and casual...Be happy with your husband...The chances of conceiving is always more when the physical intercourse is done casually without the stress to have a baby...when it gets down to just baby making, then everything goes for a toss...aap dono ke mental state stress free hone chaahiye...I hope you understand what I mean..."
Ishita nodded silently trying to swallow it all in while the gynaec added, "I know I dont have to tell you all this...you are a doctor yourself...but at times, we forget every logic when the problem hits us hard..."
Ishita faintly smiled at the counselling session that the doctor was doing without really knowing the reality of their relationship. How will she even understand? It was really complicated and no third person would even guess that they were even yet to consummate their marriage. But a scan or a mere examination at this point would make it evident that she was still a virgin. The gynaec would catch it the moment she does it. Then the situation would get more ridiculous and silly. It was indeed embarrassing to be discussing such things with a 3rd person.
When Ishita was silent, she continued, "maine Mr Raman ko bhi yahi advice diya tha...You should probably try for a few more months, may be 2 or 3...whenever you decide to come back, come on the 10 th day of your monthly cycle...kuch blood tests hai..."
She quickly nodded and also assured that she would be back for the other preliminary tests and scans some time soon.
As Ishita drove back home, her mind was really clouded with all the myriad thoughts. Every thought seemed pulling her to extreme directions. Every dimension to the whole problem looked like a mountain ahead of her. But none of it could suppress or deny one thing for sure and that was a small wish to have a baby. She had Ruhi and nothing changed her love for Ruhi but experiencing pregnancy, and all the bitter sweet moments of it, delivering a baby was something that she had always desired for though she pushed it off her mind tagging all of it as impossible. But today when the doctor mentioned about possibilities for making the impossible happen, her heart nearly leapt out of her urging her to grab the opportunity put forth for her. As a doctor herself, she knew that all these treatments depended on the age. Time factor really played a crucial part. She had seen so many women in the clinic in their late 30s and 40s struggling and striving hard with a hope to have a baby. Here she was at the right age and still pushing it all away due to her own ego.
She could also now relate and see through Raman's real intentions behind his actions the previous night. Perhaps he really wanted to give her that happiness before it was too late. His attitude and justification was probably not right but his intentions were right. She grinned at the thought of his unique way of hurling insults and taunts at her on one side and caring for her on the other side. It was Raavan's inherent nature which cannot be changed!
But now, she had to decide and get this across to him the right way. Without hurting her own self respect, she had to talk to him about it but how?
[To be continued]
My note: The gynaec's direct talks might seem awkward and embarrassing but its all part of the course of such treatments.
so how was it? pls do reply...
