PART 16
The whole hotel room was in pin-drop silence. Imli could hear her heartbeat pounding too fast that it might jump out of her ribcage.
Imli : Please don't do this. I did what I did to get you back into my life. I did it out of love.
Imli looked dreadfully into the eyes of the man who was sitting infront of her. She didn't expect him to get to her this fast because she has been very cautious in hiding her footsteps. Now, with the man himself staring at her in her hotel room, she couldn't utter a single world. She could feel deadly chills in every ounce of her blood.
Imli : Please say something, Suraj. Your silence is scary.
She took a few steps forward to touch Suraj's hands but Shikoo blocked her way.
Suraj : (Moved his torso forward, seated on the lounger and cleared his throat) Sit down, Imli. I will not repeat what I said. So... (his gestures suggested her to sit)
Listening to the intensity in his voice and Shikoo staring down at her, Imli stepped back to sit on her bed, facing Suraj. She started shivering.
Suraj : You know why I am here, don't you? (His eyes met hers, no blinking whatsoever) So, I don't want to talk much. I am going to ask you this one time; only one time.
He gestured one with his right index finger, then moved on to take an envelope from his jacket. Imli had no way to escape and no way to call for help. She knew Suraj wouldn't physically hurt her but Shikoo wasn't looking as restrained as Suraj. As she was lost in Shikoo's intimating gaze, Suraj threw a few images onto the floor.
Suraj : Tell me how this happened.
Imli : (Picked up the pictures from the floor and gulped) What... What do you mean?
Suraj : (Smirked but clearly not amused) I told you I will not repeat what I said. So, would you want to do this the easy way or the hard way? (He wasn't joking and Imli understood that)
Imli : Suraj... Please... You need to understand why I did this. I have no other choice. You choose Chakor and not me. I want to be with you and this is the only way. Only when Chakor hates you, you'll come back to me. (Imli clarified herself, tears forming up in her eyes)
Suraj : Save your tears for someone else, Imli, I'm not interested. I didn't ask why you did this. I asked how you did this. And... and don't ever mention Chakor's name. She is out of your league. It disgusts me to hear you say her name. You get it?!
Imli let out a faint nod. She had no other way but to confess the truth. Her brother is nowhere around to help her and Suraj will not budge till she admits. With a heavy heart and fear for her own life, Imli stated what seemed to be the story of friendship and betrayal which disheartened Suraj to the extreme extent.

"I don't need any security guards near me, so please leave!" Chakor took the flower vase and threw it at her two bodyguards, which they successfully ducked. Gauri tried to pacify her but it was of no use.
"Why are you behaving like this, Chakor? They are here for your own protection, remember? Suraj wants them to be with you 24/7," Gauri held Chakor's shoulders hard enough to make her cringe. "Let go of me, Gauri!" Chakor pushed Gauri's hands away. "I don't need the guards here. I need Suraj. I want Suraj here. It has been two weeks, Gauri, two damn weeks! I didn't hear anything from him. If this is how my life is going to be from now on, I don't want to feel secure anymore! I don't want this! I don't want this!" Chakor glided through the living room, picking and throwing whatever her hands got hold of.
Passing the past fortnight wasn't easy for Chakor. She tried her level best to get distracted with work but Suraj's absence made her feel hollow. Suraj always spoke to his guards to enquire about Chakor but he never did speak to her once, not because he was angry or upset with her but hearing her voice will make him want to return to her and embrace her and that is something that he didn't want to do till he clears the mess he is in. He wanted to face Chakor with the truth and the only way to do that is to get Imli.
Smashing the things around her, Chakor sat down on the floor with her palms covering her face, sobbing. "What did I ever do to deserve this, Suraj?" she mumbled. "You don't deserve any of this, Chakor. What you deserve is true love and happiness and that's what you'll get. Please control yourself till Suraj gets back to you. He sure will, very soon," Gauri embraced Chakor from the side, giving her the warmth that she had been craving for from Suraj. Chakor pulled herself together and wiped away her tears. "I know he'll be back, Gauri. I just don't know when and that thought is killing me. Seeing these guards here is making me crazy. I feel suffocated around them. I know how to take care of myself. With Imli on the run, I don't think my life is in any sort of danger. I want the guards to leave me alone, at least for tonight," she tried convincing Gauri. "But... but... Suraj wouldn't want them to do that, Chakor. They are his eyes and ears," Gauri told Chakor to reconsider her demands which she rejected profoundly.
Chakor ignored Gauri's pleas and walked straight to her bodyguards. They looked at her with intense as Suraj's words rang in their heads, "Protect her at any cost and don't overdo it. Whatever she says, goes."
"You both can take the night off. I want to be alone. I won't leave the house. Gauri is with me, so I'll be safe," Chakor was stern and as she turned around, one of the bodyguards spoke, "But, Mrs. Rajvanshi, Mr. Rajvanshi wanted us to be with you, like a shadow. We can't leave you alone. We are here to protect you." Chakor clutched her hands to her waist, "Well, Mr. Rajvanshi isn't here, is he? I'm sure he didn't want you two to make me angry. Do you want to lose your job for disobeying my orders, Mr. Lal and Mr. Singh?" Chakor's stacked up questions worsened the whole situation. They knew they can't leave her alone with their boss's absence. The best thing to do now is to contact their boss and that's what they exactly did. "One moment, Mrs. Rajvanshi," Lal took his mobile phone to contact Shikoo.
Lal : Good evening, Boss. Sorry to bother you. We have a situation here.
Shikoo : What is it, Lal? Is Madam alright?
Hearing Shikoo talking about his wife, Suraj went to grab the phone from his ears.
Suraj : Lal, Suraj here. What happen? Where's my wife?
Lal : Nothing happened, Sir. Madam wants both us to leave her alone tonight. We didn't know whether to listen to her or obey your orders, Sir.
Suraj : Why she wants you two to leave? Did you annoy her?
Lal : We didn't do anything to annoy Madam, Sir.
Suraj : (Paused) Give me a sec.
Suraj didn't know what to decide. His mind was flooded with too many issues and Chakor's safety cannot be compromised at any cost. He hadn't decided on what to do with Imli yet although she is under his custody, but there is one more person he is after and he couldn't risk Chakor's life because of her stubbornness. He too knows that she will never like to be shadowed by his men. Maybe I should just let her be alone tonight. His mind advised him as he got back to the call.
Suraj : Listen, Lal.
Lal : Yes, Sir.
Suraj : She's your boss now. Do what she says but make sure you keep track of where she is. Follow her from afar if she leaves the house. Secure the perimeter around the house before you leave. Get it?
Lal : Yes, Sir. Will do.
Suraj hung up the call and tossed the phone to Shikoo. He grabbed his IPad, switched it on and sat on the study table chair.
Shikoo : Madam still wearing it, Mr. Rajvanshi?
Suraj : (Looking at the location marker on the screen) Yes.
*****Flashback*****
Suraj wanted to give something special to Chakor on their first month anniversary as husband and wife. If he could, he would give her the world as she has been making his world beautiful with her presence. After giving it a thought, he decided to give her a gift that would shine on her wrist, an 18k white gold bracelet with heart and key tags and round dazzling diamonds. When he handed the jewelry box to her, Chakor looked at Suraj with her exquisite eyes, wondering what this mischievous guy is up to now. "Why another gift, Suraj? Do you think I needed gifts to stay with you?" Chakor pushed the box back to him, assuring him that his wealth is not what she is interested in.
Suraj took her right hand in his, turned her around like they were doing the tango and landed her back against his chest, hugging her from the back. "What are you up to now, Pakhandi'?" Chakor giggled as his mildly unshaved prickly beard brushed against her neck. "That depends on what my Jungli Billi' wants," Suraj responded, inhaling the fragrance of her skin, and moving away as her presence was intoxicating him.
"There's something special about this gift, Chakor, please open the box," Suraj pushed back the jewelry box into her hands and Chakor smirked as she unwrapped it. Her eyes landed on a sparkly bracelet with a hanging heart and keys, as she immediately glanced at Suraj. "This is so beautiful, Suraj, and looks expensive too. Why do you waste money on buying this? Can't you be a little penny-pinching?" her words forced Suraj to let out a loud laugh. "Penny what? Seriously, Chakor, your vocabulary skills are out of the world," he continued laughing as Chakor's eyes narrowed down strictly at him. "You do know that your stern look doesn't scare me, right?" Suraj grinned as he removed the bracelet from the box and placed them around Chakor's left wrist. "I know its expensive, Chakor, but this is worth less compared to your affection and care. Besides, you're mine now and I like to keep my woman happy," he sneered as Chakor raised her right knuckle to punch his shoulder. "Don't say it as if I'm your property. I'm not!"
"Ouch! Jungli Billi'. Stop getting violent all the time," he grabbed her by the wrist and pinned her against himself. "There is more to this. You see the heart here?" he pointed at the diamond studded heart in the bracelet and Chakor let out a gasp as she nodded. "This denotes my heart and the key here signifies that you hold the keys to my heart," as he ended the explanation, Chakor found herself lost in the dark brown iris of his. They have never confessed what they are feeling about one another but Suraj has been giving her some hints every now and then just to confuse her little heart. "That's too cliche, Mr. Rajvanshi. What do you want me to with your heart, then?" Chakor trifled hoping to get him to confess. Suraj smiled, "Well, we have five months more for the divorce to get finalized. I'm pretty sure you can decide on what to do with my heart by then," he hooked the bracelet around her left wrist and placed a soft kiss on her skin, just above it.
"There's one more thing, Chakor. Besides being a gift for my beautiful wife, this bracelet is kind of like a safety precaution too," Suraj cleared his throat, worried about how Chakor will respond to it. "Safety precaution? From what?" Chakor frowned. "Well, there is a tiny tracking device in it, so as long as the bracelet is with you, I will be able to trace you wherever you are. It's just to be sure...," before he could finish the sentence, Chakor interrupted. "Tracking device? Like in detective movies? Are you planning to stalk me?" she was clearly upset with the idea. "Why would you plant a tracking device and make me wear it, Suraj? I won't simply run away from you without letting you know. What happened to giving me all the freedom that I need?" Chakor blasted as she tried taking off the bracelet from her wrist.
Suraj cupped her mouth with his right palm. "Shuuush! Why are you so impulsive, Chakor? Why do you think I will stalk you, for heaven's sake?! Stop giving work to your mouth. Please listen. You know we are one of the business tycoons in our country. Our rivals are growing as well. I didn't let any bodyguards around you because I know you hate being watched all the time but as your husband, I need to make sure you're safe, Chakor. If anything happens, I would know where you are and I can reach you or I can send help before it's too late," Suraj was firm. His concern for Chakor was evident in his eyes as he slowly removed his hand from her soft lips. "Why do you worry about me so much? Chakor whispered, with her right palm caressing his cheek. "Do you even have to ask that, Chakor?" Suraj smirked as he continued, "So, please do not remove it at any cost. Consider it as my heart." Chakor shrugged as if she disagrees with his statement just to tease him.
"Do you spy on Ma and Pa too?" Chakor chuckled as Suraj rolled his eyes over the 'spy' word. "I don't spy on them but yes, they both have tracking devices on them, in their rings, and they don't know about it. So, please don't tell them that. I don't want them to freak out. Pa doesn't know that some of our rivals are not on good terms with us and I want my family to be safe, Chakor, safe even when I am not around," Suraj clarified as he retreated from Chakor.
"If this means so much to you, then I will never remove it, Suraj," Chakor reassured, smiling at the man who is now slowly making his way into her heart.
*****End of Flashback*****
Suraj : Thank you for keeping your word, Chakor (he muffled).
His reminiscences were interrupted by Shikoo who had something important to discuss.
Shikoo: Mr. Rajvanshi, shall we hand Imli over to the police now? We have recorded her statement, so our lawyer can work on pressing charges against her.
Suraj : (Turned his face away from the IPad to face Shikoo) Not so fast. Let us get to RV and then they have to confront me and my wife before we hand them over to the police.
****************************************************************************************
Chakor sat infront of the television, watching Suraj's favourite 'Tom & Jerry' cartoon. Gauri stared at her, "Who still watches this kind of children cartoon, Chakor? You sent the guards away to watch a cat chase a mouse?" she was obviously not amused by it. "Suraj does. It's his favourite," Chakor's voice had no life. She glanced at the bracelet on her left wrist, inhaling hard as Suraj's memories keep tormenting her. I hope you are fine, Suraj. I hope you found Imli. I hope to see you soon.
"No wonder you both are still behaving like overgrown children," Gauri murmured loud enough to Chakor's ears but she did not respond to it. "Wake me up when you want to go to bed, zombie Chakor. I'll just rest myself on the sofa now," Gauri slid her body to fit into the sofa's diameter and doze off.
A sudden thud woke her up from her slumber. She had no idea how long she has slept. 'Tom & Jerry' was still playing on the television but when she looked around, Chakor was not where she was sitting just now. Gauri ran up and down screaming Chakor's name and tried calling her mobile phone but there wasn't any response.
"Oh my God! Oh my God! Where are you, Chakor?! Suraj is going to kill me!" was all she could say.
Something to ponder:
What has Imli confessed to?
Is Suraj doing the right thing by staying away from Chakor for the time being?
Where could Chakor be?
