Kevin Williamson teases an explosive 'Vampire Diaries' finale

|
May 06, 2010 ? Jarett Wieselman

My adoration of Kevin Williamson and the by-products of his brain are well covered territory on PopWrap -- "Scream," "Dawson's Creek," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and "The Faculty" have all earned ink. But then he went and launched "The Vampire Diaries" which kicked over the well and ran away with all the ink.

2010's Best New Drama premieres its penultimate episode tonight titled "Isobel" and promises to crank up Elena's mama drama in a big way. And "big" is the word du jour next week as well when the season finale takes a page out of Daniel Day Lewis' playbook. Oh yes, there will be blood.

I caught up with Kevin as he put the finishing touches on next week's episode, titled "Founder's Day," for a frank chat about the show's first year. What worked, what didn't and what fans will have to wait for next season to see.

PopWrap: First off, I just have to say how much I've enjoyed this season of "Vampire Diaries." Easily the best new drama on TV right now.
Kevin Williamson: It's been really hard so that's nice to hear. We're exhausted. First year shows are very difficult. There are just so many elements in the storytelling aspect. Thank goodness all the other stuff -- casting, directing, production -- fell into place from the very beginning.

PW: I know you're still editing the finale, but can you look at the season objectively yet?
Kevin: I can look back and think, oy! There's not much going on there that some time wouldn't have fixed. We're on the TV schedule – there's no time to say, "gee, another re-write might help that."

PW: What specifically would you like to get a "do over" on?
Kevin: You're talking to me – I'm never happy. I want to rewrite everything. I could sit in a room by myself and rewrite forever and ever and never send it to Atlanta. There are characters and situations I wish I could have explored more. We just weren't able to properly introduce a lot, so we just held back. But that's OK, it'll give us a richer second season.

PW: When did you start plotting out a second season?
Kevin: As soon as they [renewed] us, we started mapping out the second and third season. And when I say mapping out, I mean, we'd say "that'd be great in season three after we do this." Once we start talking globally like that, the pieces fall into place. We've got long term goals in regards to arcs, but then we also have short term immediate plans.

PW: Speaking of immediacy, tonight Elena meets her real mother Isobel. What can you tell us about this character?
Kevin: Isobel being Elena's mother was a twist that we sort of sat in the room and just broke it as a twist. "OMG, her mother isn't her mother!" We wanted to bring her back in a more layered and complex way. Here's a woman who, from Alaric's standpoint, set out to become a vampire. She sought Damon out. There are so many questions -- why did she become a vampire? -- and we'll toy with the answers. Isobel comes in with a motive and an agenda, and that gets challenged from everyone around her. She's kind of badass.

PW: Will we see Katherine in modern day times in these last two episodes?
Kevin: Nah, that's another season.

PW: Last week Anna's mother Pearl was killed -- how does that play out?
Kevin: It's so tragic, to have poor Anna finally reunited only to lose her mother again. It's interesting to see Anna react like a young girl would. If you've noticed our vampires are the most emotional characters on the show. So it's interesting that their Achilles heel is love. But watch for how Jeremy responds.

PW: Jeremy had a lot to do in the beginning and end of the season, but not so much the middle. Is he, or Tyler, who you were talking about having difficulty weaving in?
Kevin: Yes, had there been more time, I would have figured out how to interweave their storylines in a more fluid way. But once the genre element takes off and we're trying to get into that tomb, what do you do with Caroline and Matt if they don't know about vampires? And poor Tyler, he is an extension of those two, so that's been one of my regrets in season one – not being able to explore our supporting cast., but that's all going to change though in the second season.

PW: You started to hint at Tyler's true nature in the Miss Mystic Falls episode -- will season two deal with that?
Kevin: I would without question say that Tyler will have his journey in season two. We'll definitely be exploring the Lockwood curse next year, which, if you've read the books, you know there's something that triggers it and it simply hasn't been triggered yet.

PW: Next week is the season finale and I'm hearing there are lots and lots of cliffhangers.
Kevin: [laughs] The fans are gunna hate us a little bit, but I hope it's in good fun. The Isobel episode actually answers a lot of questions .. but raises a couple too. That leads us into the finale, which is founders day and we bring this chapter of the show – the tomb vampire – to a close.

PW: Season finales tend to either prolong season one storylines or set up season two -- which is this?
Kevin: It's a little bit of both. We close the door on a couple chapters – some things are very, very final [laughs] and won't be coming back.

PW: Some things or some people won't be coming back, Kevin?
Kevin: Well, who knows. Things are left hanging and others are introduced. We don't introduce a whole new storyline in the last moment, but we do 100 percent tease several roads we'll be going down next season.

PW: Will you continue to use flashbacks next season?
Kevin: Probably periodically – just not the Civil War era. It's been fun and a way that I can enjoy flashbacks, because I'm not that guy. I typically hate them, so the fact that there's vampire mythology involved makes it easier for me to swallow. We're just telling the complete story.

PW: What about Melinda Clarke -- will we be seeing Kelly Donovan again?
Kevin: That depends on her CW pilot. But she was very much one of the characters we didn't get to fully explore, so I would welcome her back. We have a whole backstory to her character and her involvement with Mayor Lockwood that we just never ever began to touch on because of time. If she's willing to come play, we have more story to tell with her.

'The Vampire Diaries' cast off the hook

October 2, 2009 | 10:06 am
Charges against four stars of the CW's "The Vampire Diaries" were dismissed this week by a Georgia judge.

Cast members Nina Dobrev, Candice Accola, Kayla Ewell and Sara Canning were arrested in August, along with photographer Tyler Shields and extra Krystal Vayda, after a photo shoot on the Rumble Road Bridge caused concerned motorists to call in complaints. Drivers told authorities that the women were dangling from the bridge and flashing passers-by. Ewell has publicly denied the allegations.

After authorities searched Shields' camera and discovered photos of the women hanging over the bridge ledge and simulating being tossed over the edge, the six were booked at the Monroe County Sheriff's Department. They were charged with disorderly conduct.

Shields posted $500 bail for each person, for a total of $3000. The bonds were forfeited when all six failed to appear in court. According to a Monroe County court spokesperson, Judge Geoffrey Davis dismissed the case without issuing any arrest warrants.

"The Vampire Diaries," which shoots in Atlanta, airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Mia Kirshner (Isobel) from The Vampire Diaries

Last week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries" was one of my favorites of the entire season. We have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Elena's biological mom and we finally got to meet her. We even find out that Jon Gilbert is actually Elena's biological father. Isobel is a complex vampire who struggles with her humanity (or lack thereof) and her feelings towards her ex-husband Alaric and her "maker" Damon. I recently had the chance to chat with Mia Kirshner, who plays Isobel, and she had some interesting insights into her character. We even talked a little bit about her time on "The L Word."

How did you get the part of Isobel?
It was all just pretty random. It was right before Christmas, and I was in the countryside of Malawi staying on a dairy farm, (laughs) and I got this call from my agent and they told me about the show, The Vampire Diaries and it sounded pretty cool. And then they said that I could speak to Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec [Executive Producers] who I spoke to and it was through Skype and it was a really crackly connection, but there were words: mysterious and unpredictable and stuff like that I believe we used in the conversation that made me excited about the character. And I knew that they were talented, so I said yes–not knowing a lot about it. It was kind of a leap of faith.

Isobel is a vampire devoid of any human emotions. How are you able to relate to her?
I don't think that's true.

Oh, you don't? Interesting!
I don't. I think that she tries not to have human emotions but I think actually that's her weakness–that she struggles with is that she does still have feelings for Alaric and her daughter.

Oooh, interesting. And how are you able to relate to her? Are you anything like her at all?
(laughs) We both like Paris. We love France. We speak French. That's probably about it.

So the producers didn't tell you too much about her back story?
No. I only learned more about the back story when I watched the actual episode. And that was interesting. But no, it was sort of left to my imagination what happened to her between the time that Damon turned her and when she comes back.

So you think that she loves and cares for Alaric. Why do you believe that?
Because I think true love is hard to come by and I think it's part of who she is. She's got a lot of lovers in her life, and nothing to compares to what she had. And it's like at the end of the episode "Isobel," she said "I made a mistake."

Do you think she cares about Elena as well?
I think so. And I also think, as twisted as this sounds — I'm not defending Isobel's actions — I think she wants to push her daughter away because she doesn't want her daughter to be like her. But I think that ultimately, she's going to do everything she can to protect her daughter's well-being.

Yeah, like try to kill Damon and Stefan.
Yes, I mean in her mind, I think she has a skewed view of reality (laughs).

I think the question everyone wants to know is will Isobel be back?
You know, you never know what's going to happen. I think that's a question for Julie and Kevin. I would imagine she's been really positioned in such a way that I think, I don't know, it seems like she certainly the character to be reckoned with. But that's more of a question for them.

Presuming she does come back, which I hope she does, what do you want to see from Isobel going forward?
I think I'd like her to go head-to-head with Katherine one day. I think that would be fantastic. I would like to see the full scope of her power. I think ultimately she wants to be in charge. So, how she's going to do that I'm not sure. But yeah, I think I'd to see more of that. And I'd like to see more elements of her past and then the present day. Like where she was and what her influences are and why she is the way she is. And I'd like to see — for me, what was really important, which you don't see that much in this episode — but something that I want in the character is the humanity. I think that's what makes her even more seductive.

For sure. And what was your favorite scene to film in last week's episode?
I really love working with Matt Davis. He is just such a goofball and when I work with him, we're both like little kids together. We make dumb jokes together. And sometimes it was so hard to look at him, because I'd burst into laughter. I just think we have fabulous chemistry. Ian [Somerhalder] is just lovely. We sat next to each other on the plane. And then we actually met to rehearse our scene and I respect his preparation and his seriousness towards his work. He's a gentleman. He carried my bag at the airport, he drove me back to the hotel. He's a really, really, really nice guy. I don't want to pick a favorite because they're all great. And Nina [Dobrev] came back to my hotel room and we had dinner and rehearsed together, and [she's] also very professional. So I guess in different ways, I enjoyed all of them, which sounds like a boring answer.

You touched on it a bit, but what was it like coming into such a tight knit cast? Were they very welcoming?
Yeah, they were totally lovely. I really appreciated the fact that it's the end of the season, and I imagine everyone's so tired, and yet everybody rehearsed. So that was wonderful. And I thought that they were unbelievably welcoming and sweet and gracious. I think what's most impressive about the cast is something that perhaps people take for granted is that they're professionals. They know their lines, they do their job, and they take their work very seriously. As a result of that, it's a welcoming atmosphere.

Do you think Isobel is anything like any of your previous characters? Jenny Schecter [from the L Word] comes to mind.
Like Jenny? Oh no, I don't think Isobel is crazy.

She's just a vampire.
Yeah, she's just operating on another — we're not talking human terms, when we talk about Isobel. No I don't think she's like Jenny. And it's also a really different kind of show. But no, I don't think so. Isobel was so cold and flat, and there was so little room. It was a challenge for me as an actor, because I'm not used to working like that. So I guess in that sense, it's a very different character.

That makes sense. To switch gears for a moment to The L Word, the big question in my mind, with the way everything ended, is did someone kill Jenny or did Jenny kill herself?
I don't know. The whole last season was confusing to me. So, I wish that I had — I don't know. I wish I had an answer.

That's okay. That's a perfectly acceptable answer.
I always thought Jenny was a survival of the fittest type person. I don't think she would — I could imagine Jenny faking her own death and reappearing in another country to wreak havoc.

Do you have favorite moments from filming that show?
Oh my God, I mean, that's the thing. Rose Rollins, who played Tasha, is one of my best friends. Actually, her show was just picked up today! So we talk about this all the time. It's not really a favorite moment, but we were so lucky to work with the girls that we worked with. We were so close and we had so much freedom and it was just a very blessed time, in my life at least. I'm very grateful for that.

So back to The Vampire Diaries…did you have any interesting fan reactions to Isobel?
You know what, I don't think I look like Isobel in real life, so I haven't been recognized as Isobel. But I guess, we'll see.

Do you know any tidbits of your storyline that we didn't get to see or we might see in the future?
Yeah, there are definitely — and again, I think it's a question for Julie and Kevin — but there were quite a few things that were left out, that weren't in the episode, like quite a few juicy things that I'm not sure why they chose to remove. But I don't know if I'm allowed to say what.

Any little things that you could share?
I guess the scene with Alaric at the end was much more romantic, and much sadder. And then I think the scene was Damon was definitely much longer. That was cut down.

And do you have any other projects coming up?
Well, I just finished The Vampire Diaries, and I finished another movie where I play a vampire queen. And that's called "Dark Days." And what I spend most of my time doing — I had a book that Pantheon Books published last year, called "I Live Here," and it's an anthology about human rights all over the world…human rights abuses. [It's] kind of like a visual documentary. My partners and I started a program in Malawi's Kachere Juvenile Prison. The link for the website I-Live-Here.com.

That's what you were doing in Malawi!
Exactly! You were probably wondering why I was there. I was there working on — we run a school in a juvenile prison, and we run a permaculture program, a legal rights program and creative writing [program]. We're having a ball — a Russian themed ball on July 29th. It should be fun. It's such a huge part of my life, that in a way, it kind of inhibits my ability to work as much as I'd like.

Well I know I hope to see you again on The Vampire Diaries next season. It was such a wonderful episode.
Oh really! You liked it?

Oh yeah!
I couldn't tell. Was it a good episode?

Yeah. They've been building Isobel up all season, so it was great to finally see her. I really liked it.
Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Be sure to tune in tonight for the season finale of The Vampire Diaries at 9 pm on the CW.

'Vampire Diaries' season finale: Ian Somerhalder talks Damon's love for Elena, cliffhangers

By Korbi Ghosh

|

May 13, 2010 3:30 PM ET

"The Vampire Diaries" is, without a doubt, the biggest success story for The CW this season and as its first year comes to a close, there are several questions looming.

Like, um, is Damon really in love with Elena?

Korbi TV got some quality time with Ian Somerhalder, who was kind enough to share his thoughts on the subject and give us a little preview of what we can expect as the season ends...

The finale is upon us.
Ian Somerhalder: Yeah, it's a good episode. There's a lot of stuff that happens and it's fun. It took a long time to shoot and there are eight cliffhangers. I think people are going to like it. I hope.

Eight cliffhangers?
IS: (Laughs) Yeah, there's a lot of them.

Of course there are. "Vampire Diaries" doesn't really mess around. Seems like there's always something big going down, so I imagine the finale will be, well, epic.
IS: Yeah, I was talking to a very good friend of mine who said that he was a little concerned because every episode has so much great stuff in it. He was like, how can they sustain it? But there are four or five books to pull storylines from and then we have the insanity of [producers] Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec's writing [to rely on], so we're lucky.

And in the season finale, I'm hearing we may be seeing a different side of Damon. He's teaming with Alaric to stop Johnathan Gilbert from destroying the Founders Day festival?
IS: Yeah. You know, it's a weird thing for Damon. He came into this town, not giving a s**t about anybody or anything. He wanted Katherine, and that's really it. He loves his brother, but he just wanted to get his girl and get out of there. And I think what surprised the hell out of Damon is he's started to find himself caring about things, some of the people and this place, and that is a weird notion for him. It puts him into this protective mode and he goes to work and he's literally fighting for [something other than himself]. It's a different Damon. To be honest with you, it took me some time to get used to. It was strange to [experience] Damon being sincere or a hero, you know? It's just not Damon.

You were uncomfortable with it?
IS: Yeah. You know that moment, in life, when you're spending time or maybe on a date with someone that you're really in like with and then all of a sudden you realize you have major feelings for this person? And then the second part of that notion is, damn it.

Yes. Because, ultimately, you're then in a vulnerable position.
IS: Yes. And being vulnerable is not Damon's shtick. There are bits of vulnerability in Damon at times, but having this openly vulnerable Damon, to be honest with you, does not sit very well with me. It was not easy for me to play. Because Damon's always in control and, as Ian playing Damon, I feel the same way. So we both sort of empower each other in this odd relationship that I have with this alter ego and having him be even remotely vulnerable took away a bit of that power and sort of leveled me a little bit. Usually when I'm on my way to work, I'm working on my dialogue, just running [my lines] and when I get out of that car, I am so [focused] and I have a little pep in my step, I feel like I've got the world in my hands. I know I'm about to go jab at someone or be funny, always in a position of power. But during the 11 or 12 days that we shot this last episode, I remember getting out of my car and just feeling strange. I've actually never said this out loud, so I can't even articulate it.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. Now, do you think this more vulnerable Damon is someone we're going to see more of in Season 2?
IS: (Laughs) I hope not. No, you know, I am up for the ride. I am really a passenger on this train and [the writer-producers] are driving this sucker.

Based on the way the season finale ends, do you have a clue as to which way it will go?
IS: I don't know. I'm not sure how to answer that. He gets some stuff thrown at him [in the season finale], big time. And that's going to be a problem.

I assume some of that stuff will have to do with Elena. We know he cares about her, but do you think he is actually in love with her?
IS: Well, I think it's pretty complicated. I mean, look, if you were in love with someone for 145 years, only to get your heart ripped out by her, and for him to realize how stupid that was, it's also got to be so unbelievably strange and confusing to now have this girl who is literally her doppelganger [come into his life]. Talk about dating a younger woman, Damon's something like 168-years-old, she's like 150 years younger than him!

Well Katherine is someone who's perhaps a bit more age appropriate for him. I'm assuming we may catch a glimpse of her in the finale. Kevin and Julie have both said she will be back in the mix at some point.
IS: Yes she will.

Now knowing how she betrayed him, can you anticipate how Damon will react to seeing her again?
IS: I honestly don't know, because I haven't really spoken to Kevin about how she becomes intertwined back into this for both Damon and Stefan. Because, don't kid yourself, Stefan is just as in love with Katherine as Damon was, if not more. I mean, they both see her faults and sort of despise her in this weird way, but they both are so wrapped up in her at the same time. You know, she was their Creator. She was their lover. They thought she was their soulmate. She embodied all these roles for them, so when she comes back, I think it's going to knock the hell out of both of them.

And how worried do you think Stefan should be about Damon's burgeoning feelings for Elena, especially given that Damon does seem to be the sort of guy who gets what he wants?
IS: Yeah, I think probably pretty worried. It seems to me that it would even the score between them, since Damon truly believes that Stefan is the reason Katherine was taken from him. So taking Elena from Stefan would probably even the playing field. Damon probably won't rest until he's gotten Elena.

Makes perfect sense.
IS: Makes perfect sense.

And Damon now knows something pretty monumental about Elena, who her biological father is. Will that be something he addresses in the season finale?
IS: Oh yeah. John Gilbert (David Anders) plays a big role in this episode, he wreaks havoc in this episode, so there's a lot going on with that. For sure.

But it seems as though John and Isobel, her biological parents, may not be as evil as we had originally thought. At the end of the day, they really seem to be sort of looking out for Elena.
IS: That's the irony. He really is just looking out for her. That's the strange thing about the whole John Gilbert [storyline]. I, as a viewer, feel sort of bad for John Gilbert, because in actuality, he's really just protecting his town and his family. Vampires, man. It's like, if you jump into [the ocean] and you're swimming around with piranhas, you're not thinking any of them are going to be nice to you. How would you rationalize being sympathetic to the cause of this supernatural, vampire world? Of course John Gilbert wants them dead. It's just [complicated] that Elena happens to be in love with one of them.

Okay, last thing, forgive me, but everyone wants to know, will we see you shirtless again in the season finale? Or are we going to be waiting all summer for another one of those scenes?
IS: That's a Season 2-er.

We'll have to put a special request in with Julie and Kevin.
IS: You absolutely should.

Vampire Diaries Stars Spill Secrets on Season Two, That Kiss and...Ashlee Simpson?!

Warning: The Trifecta of Hotness that is otherwise known as Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley may scorch your retinas.

Watch the video above with an emergency eye-flush kit on hand.

I just caught up with The Vampire Diaries stars to talk about that insanely good season finale and what's ahead for season two. So why were we talking about Melrose Place's (RIP) Ashlee Simpson appearing on The Vampire Diaries?

Turns out, Ashlee was the CW's first choice for Nina's role of Elena/Katherine.

"We all independently looked at a bunch of [audition] DVDs," co-executive producer and director Marcos Siega told the crowd at a recent Screen Actors Guild event for TVD. "We couldn't find the girl we wanted. The network wanted us to hire Ashlee Simpson...But Nina [Dobrev] sent this DVD back and we all were home looking, searching, and we came in the next day saying, 'We should look at Nina again.' We showed it to Peter Roth, and Peter only saw her on that tape and he said, 'That's her.'"

"Half of Hollywood I think went out for the role, for all our roles," Nina tells me. "I guess I did something right, here I am. We had to discover and find our characters. Every episode we learned something more and something more, and eventually we created and molded these amazing, awesome characters."

Paul reveals he also auditioned many times for the role of Damon before Ian came in and swooped it up.

"You're just too sweet, Paul," Ian teases his onscreen brother from the same mother.

"I just think you're too evil," Paul shoots back.

"No one is arguing that," Ian counters.

As for what's ahead in season two, the cast says they're taking nothing for granted and prepared to make it another fantastic year with their tried-and-true season-one formula: hard work.

"We want the second season to be as good as the first season," Paul tells me. "We start shooting relatively soon, and it's gonna go by like that, so as much as we're celebrating, we're also bracing ourselves."

"Typically the second season of every show is generally its best year," Ian adds, "so I think we need to make it an unbelievable year of television."

So what about any sort of real relationship between Damon and Elena? Ian hints only that "the dynamic is going to change between the three of us."

"It basically picks up right where we left off," Nina reveals. "That's the only thing we're gonna say."

"If they told us, they know that we would we tell you, and then they'd chop our fingers off," Ian teases.

As long as he keeps his toes...

Hear what Nina and Ian have to say about the porch-scene kiss in the video above, plus the shameless footsie moment with Ian Somerhalder that made me squeal like a little girl riding a pony...made of chocolate...dipped in magic. And they say I'm not the consummate professional journalist. Pshaw!

What are you hoping will go down on TVD for season two? And can you picture Ashlee playing Elena/Katherine? Sound off below.

Ian Somerhalder Does 'GQ' Magazine

Trent PinkisthenewBlog.com 04/20/10 01:55 PM

Ian Somerhalder, the bad boy vamp on The Vampire Diaries, is featured in the new issue of GQ magazine modeling the hottest colored shirts to wear this season. IMHO, Ian looks better when he's not wearing suits but even I have to admit ' he can wear a suit very well. Here is one of his GQ photos along with some excerpts from his very short accompanying interview:

On how J.J. Abrams picked the right moment to tell him he'd been killed off Lost:
"I was in wine country, man, with a beautiful girl. I said to J.J., 'Your timing is impeccable. If I'd been at a Denny's I would have started crying.' I downed a couple of bottles of Pinot and I was set."

On being accosted in airports by obsessed fans of both Lost and The Vampire Diaries:
"The decibel level at which a 13-year-old can explain how much she loves you'it's the coolest thing ever."

While the interview may be lacking (it's just a short blurb, barely an interview at all), the photospread is much more substantial ' and easy on the eyes. After the jump, check out a few more photos of Ian modeling this Spring's hottest colored shirts in the new issue of GQ magazine '

Yeah, Ian wears most things very well ' I'm not a big fan of colored shirts but, then again, if I looked this good in them I'd prolly wear them all the time. Lookin' good Mr. Somerhalder.

Though it's two weeks later, we're still reeling from "The Vampire Diaries'" jaw-dropping season finale. Anna! Katherine! Oh my! Though we still have a long, hot summer to bear until season 2 starts, we can give you a few huge hints as to what the next season will hold. And we did say HUGE! "VD" executive producer and writer Julie Plec sat down for a THREE HOUR confab with The VRO to chat about the growing Elena-Damon-Stefan love triangle, Tyler Lockwood's true nature and whether beloved Anna will ever return.

When last we left Damon he was smooching Elena, or so we (and he) thought until moments later when she whipped out that big butcher knife and let us know she was really Elena's look-a-like, naughty vamp Katherine. So will deceived Damon continue to woo Elena in the upcoming season? "The only thing I can say about them for season two, is that it's going to be a very profound triangle," Julie said rather coyly, though she did drop a few hints. "Damon's still got a long way to go until he's man enough to deserve Elena. But he has a strong pull, a strong draw." But with Katherine stalking Mystic Falls, Julie says to expect more of a "love square." Though I was never good at geometry, that does sound rather intriguing, no?

And speaking of the ancient vampire diva, Julie confirmed that Katherine and Elena are indeed related (unlike in the book series), and that their connection will continue to be revealed. "Our position is very much that the bloodline is the Pierce bloodline. Isobel is part of that, as is Elena. Elena looks like Katherine, they're doppelgangers. That's the big question that will continue to be asked deep into the second season."

Julie and creator Kevin Williamson's overarching goal for season 2 is to integrate the other characters outside of the love triangle, especially Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino). "Tyler is crucial to this mythology," Julie said. "The werewolf element is crucial to this story. Season two is big time about the Lockwoods, so the first thing that happens is Mrs. Lockwood steps in as interim mayor." And if Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) survives (wink, wink), Julie alluded to that fact that he and Tyler could share a strong connection. Another new bromance on the horizon will be Stefan and Matt (Zach Roerig). Yes, Elena's ex and current love will become "true blue" friends.

One character whose screen time shouldn't be counted on is the dearly departed Anna (Malese Jow), who Julie emphatically confirmed is dead. "As far as we're concerned, Anna is no longer in our world. Now, there's flashbacks and all kinds of opportunities in the future, but Anna is dead." But if it's any consolation, the cast and crew were just as bummed about her departure as we were. In fact, when the crew found out she was being killed off they made "Save Anna" T-shirts. How cute!

Here are a few other fun tidbits to sink your teeth into:

-Julie hinted that Stefan, Elena and Jonathan Gilbert may not be the only ones with diaries. "Who knows, maybe Katherine had a journal back in the day," she teased.

-We'll continue to see flashbacks from 1864, but the writers have also brainstormed more current scenes for future seasons. An ongoing joke is Stefan and Damon partying at the now-defunct nightclub Studio 54.

-Ever wondered what happened to that menacing crow that flew around the first few episodes (we did!)? Julie said the crow and fog, which Damon both controlled, seemed a little too supernatural for the show—and that's saying a lot for a series revolving around vampires!

-Julie sometimes has to nix story ideas because they're too similar to things that have happened in "Twilight" or "True Blood," "I'll pitch a story, and [Kevin] will be like, 'No, we can't do it. "True Blood" just did that.'"

You can listen to the entire three-hour discussion right here. Julie, we're officially convinced you can out talk anyone! But still, thanks for the great scoops.
