Nina Dobrev didn't exactly emerge from out of nowhere to land the highly coveted role of heroine Elena Gilbert on "The Vampire Diaries." She'd previously spent four years on the Canadian teen drama "Degrassi: The Next Generation" and had small parts in films such as "Away From Her" and "Repo! The Genetic Opera." But the show (which is filmed in Decatur and Covington) was a huge step up the Hollywood ladder for the 21-year-old Dobrev, who clearly relishes the challenges The CW network hit presents. We recently spoke with the Bulgarian-born, Toronto-bred beauty about her acting background, her ATL food addictions and what fans can expect from season two of "The Vampire Diaries."
JEZEBEL: You got into the arts at a very early age. What initially sparked your interest in performing?
NINA DOBREV: I was always a really outgoing kid. My parents didn't know what to do with me because I was so high energy, and my friends and I were always putting on little plays at home. I started doing gymnastics and ballet, so I was always performing in some way. Then I went to a performing arts high school in Canada where we studied music, dance and theater, and I realized that that was where I was happiest.
JEZ: Of all the art forms you studied, why did you choose to pursue acting?
ND: Theater was probably my favorite thing, and that's where I felt most comfortable. I loved creating characters, doing accents, being different people and exploring that side of myself. I'd watch all these films and envision myself in the roles, and I loved reading plays and scripts. I just decided to try it out and see where it took me.
JEZ: You landed a huge part on "Degrassi: The Next Generation" when you were just 16. How did that role change your life?
ND: I didn't realize how big it was at the time. The part was originally just going to be for a couple of episodes. As I went on, the show taught me a lot about being on set and how to act on camera, because I was very green. I ended up spending four years on "Degrassi," but because it was a Canadian show made far away from Hollywood, I was able to get into the business more progressively. A lot of people who start acting at an early age lose their sense of reality, but I had time to be a normal kid while at the same time doing this thing I loved.
JEZ: How did you get the role on "The Vampire Diaries"?
ND: When I finished "Degrassi," I decided to fly down for pilot season in L.A., but I didn't have high expectations. "The Vampire Diaries" was one of the first auditions I went on, and I loved the script. But I was sick for my first audition and they weren't really sure about me, then I got a movie that was being shot in Canada, so I went home. ["The Vampire Diaries" casting directors] asked me to put myself on tape and they liked what I did, so they flew me back down. It was a long process, and I really had to fight for the role because there were so many girls who wanted to play Elena. I was very lucky, and I still feel like I have the coolest character–or characters–on TV.
JEZ: Which do you enjoy more, being fought over by two hunky vampires or getting to play two different roles?
ND: I love getting to play two roles, because one is such a sweet, nice girl and the other is this crazy, conniving, narcissistic vampire killer. That's an opportunity that rarely happens on one show. I've played nice girls before–Mia Jones of "Degrassi" was a nice girl–but Katherine has an edge to her that I haven't had a chance to play before, so it's a challenge that keeps things fresh and exciting.
JEZ: The first season finale was pretty epic. What can fans expect from the second season?
ND: It's just going to get more and more intense. Katherine has been talked about for 22 episodes, so we've had an idea of what a horrible person she is and how much pain she's caused. But now that she's back, you can only imagine how much havoc she's going to wreak. Everything's going to be heightened next season.
JEZ: How has the popularity of the show impacted your personal life?
ND: It's interesting because I get recognized a lot more often in big cities like L.A. and New York than I do in Atlanta. Being in Atlanta has been an amazing blessing: The city's a little smaller, the people are so nice and the food is so delicious, I just love it! People know that we film [in Decatur], but they're respectful. Even when people ask for autographs, it's not as invasive because they're so cool and sweet about it.
JEZ: Have you discovered any favorite places in Atlanta?
ND: I love the food so much that it's kind of become a problem because we have to stay in shape for filming. (Laughs) I love TWO Urban Licks, Wisteria and ONE. Midtown Kitchen, and Rathbun's is just amazing. We've been to a lot of places around Atlanta, but still haven't discovered as much of the city as we'd like to because we film 15-hour days. But when we do go out, I love that there are so many diverse pockets to explore, from Buckhead and Inman Park to Little 5 Points, which has that awesome urban edge.
JEZ: You've got "The Vampire Diaries" coming back in the fall and you're shooting an action film with Samuel L. Jackson that's due out next year. What are your goals for the future?
ND: I've always wanted to constantly challenge myself and play different characters in different genres, whether it's action, drama, romantic comedy or a period piece. I'll never take a part just for a paycheck or to fill time; I want to do projects that I really enjoy. I want to go above and beyond and exceed all the expectations that I have for myself and that others have for me. I don't know exactly what the future will bring, but I'm really excited to see.

It could be worse. A report could be going around that Paul Wesley will embark on a rap career.
But that's not the kind of story his Vampire Diaries costar Nina Dobrev is trying to spread. And after hearing the reasons, we can't help but wonder if there isn't some truth to those vampire rumors...
"First, I have fangs," Paul explained at the Monte Carlo TV Fest. "Second, I am kind of an insomniac. And third, in the first season, I was always able to beat everyone to wherever they were going even though they left before me. Somehow I'd get there ahead of them and I'd be standing there in a black rain coat. And they were like, 'How'd you do that? How did you get here so fast?' And so I started playing on that and purposely started trying to do things to freak them out a little," he joked.
Funny. If we turn around and he's suddenly standing behind us as we type this...
Damn. No dreamy Paul.
Besides rumor mongering, The Vampire Diaries' golden three also dropped some knowledge about the next season.
We got this exclusive dish from Ian Somerhalder on hot new couple Damon and Katherine: "She's probably going to kick my ass. Katherine is an evil bitch. She's a narcissistic, crazy bitch." Ah, pet names. Love is sweet, isn't it?
Even if Ian gets his butt handed to him next season, you won't hear him making a peep of protest. "Let's face it: Nina Dobrev in her underwear—who could complain about that?" We hear ya, Ian. But it's only fair we see more of you in your underwear, no? An eye for an eye...or something like that.
On the other side of the hot vampire coin is sweet Stefan. But it looks like next season we'll be seeing a little less "sweet" and a bit more "evil."
"He is always going to be protective of Elena, but there are times that he is going to be tempted by blood," Paul dishes. "He's a vampire and he has malice inside him. I think it would be a mistake to ignore that."
Maybe we'll see a personality switch between the two brothers? Damon becomes a gentle, patient vampire and Stefan starts ripping random people's throats out? Paul concurs!
Sort of.
"I think depending on the situation and the circumstance that it can happen. Damon will be nicer and Stefan more violent and then they will switch again...If Stefan loses Elena, even for a moment, he loves her and I think he could do anything," he says before transforming into a bat and disappearing into the night sky.
OK, he didn't exactly turn into a bat. But can we all just keep this "Paul really is a vampire" rumor going? It'll help pass the time while we wait for the return of The Vampire Diaries in the fall.

"Vampire Diaries" actor Michael Trevino stopped by to do an exclusive photo shoot and interview with us at Breakoutmagazine.com. Michael plays series regular "Tyler Lockwood" the mayor's son, on the hit CW television show which has already been picked up for a second season. There's a strong fascination with Vampires in the last few years. We've had Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, & True Blood that have all had enormous success. I asked him what he attributes this to. "I think Vampires in general, for both males and females, are just sexy", Michael says. "There's something really dark about it , so people are intrigued and turned on". Michael's character is not a vampire but he definitely has a super power that has been on a slow burn for most of season 1, but the little hints that the writers are throwing at us in regards to Tylers development, has us anticipating season 2.
"It's frustrating", (waiting for his storyline to develop) Michael says. "You have to be patient, but then you understand that we have huge ensemble cast, we have to tell a story. There's a lot that's gonna happen in Season 2, there's a lot of surprises coming up, there's gonna be a lot more Tyler Lockwood coming around". In the Season 1 finale, Tyler is affected by the same device that was meant to weed out the vampires in the town and in doing so, we get a glimpse of what's to come for Tyler.
Michael arrived at our downtown Los Angeles studio for his photo shoot looking like he just stepped off the set of "Vampire Diaries". A well mannered, charming individual with a huge smile and if I was a betting man, "a mischievous side as well". He's definitely a guys guy, who women would love to date and guys would love to just hang out with and grab a beer. Below are excerpts from our conversation.
In playing the role of Tyler Lockwood, what have you learned about yourself? Are you using parts of any experience that you've gone through?
Well I can't say that I've ever hooked up with anyone of my best friends mothers, like Tyler did.
Damn! I was hoping for an exclusive...BUT would you?
(laughs) No! No!
What if she was like, really Hot?
(big smile) Ahh, you just can't do that.
What if she was like Kelly Hu, hot?
(stops! and his eyes get big) Aw man! alright, I might. How close are you with the boy? Are you really homies or are you just acquaintances? (pauses) uh!.wait...what were we talking about?
What have you found in yourself and if there's any experiences.
You know I play a lot of evil characters, I play a lot of bullies which I don't get cause I used to get picked on a lot in high school.
REALLY
Yea, maybe it's my inner rage, but I'm always playing these boy next door characters that are really evil and have this dark past or something. So for me to be honest, it's very easy to tap into Tyler and it's also fun! It's always fun to be the really evil villian guy, always startin fights.
Now you say you were bullied in school? You're not to far out of school, were you a lot skinnier there, or shorter?
No, it was wierd, like...I was the jock, I played football all four years of high school but, for some reason I always got picked on. I don't know what it was man, maybe I was yapping my mouth too much or maybe people were threatned, I don't know what it is.
So how does a kid like you grow up to wanna be an actor, what was your first taste of getting into this business?
I did this commercial for Old Navy, that got me my SAG(Screen Actors Guild) card. If you've ever seen, during the winter time, those Old Navy performance fleece commercials. It was only in the winter time, everybody's dancing. I booked that first, but it was only for the spanish market, so no one ever saw it...mainly all my friends, no one ever saw it cause I never told them.
Michael decided that after a 1 year stint at a Junior college, he was gonna take a year off and try the acting thing because he didn't want to look back and say to himself "What if?" "You always gotta try, cause if not, it's always gonna linger in the back of your head." Michael says. So he went to a store and bought a book called "How To Be a Working Actor". He studied that book and it worked.
Now, as I told you earlier, I scoured the internet trying to do my research on you.
Trying to dig up dirt!
Trying to dig up something, so that I can surprise you and be like...What about that! But I couldn't find anything! So I'm trying to let the fans know a little bit about you. So are you single, dating?
Single
Single? Is that the Hollywood answer "single?"
Whoah, what does that mean, the Hollywood answer?
You know, they like to make you appear single, so that they all come for you.
No, no, I'm single....and I'll leave it at that! (with a sligh grin on his face)
Ok, what type of girl is gonna tie you down.
Aw man...somebody who's got personality, somebody who's gonna roll with me, who's spontaneous, who can laugh at my jokes, who can also be strong, and not let me walk all over them. I need somebody to slap me around, that kind of turns me on!
Ha ha ha!!!
Not in a sexual way, but I'm just saying
Cause that's how it sounded lol!
I didn't mean it like that, A girl that can take care of herself, who's very independent.
Oh! so you want Beyonce, an independent woman.
After a brief talk about his hobby as a photographer, I asked Michael a more serious question about his biggest fear. At first he admitted he was terrified of spiders and cockroaches, but after really thinking about the question, he said his biggest fear was loosing his parents. "At this point in my life, where I'm at right now, my biggest fear would be losing one of them suddenly" he said. "I don't think I'ma be ready for that".
Check out this awesome fan encounter recap from Tiff (@Tiffyxox). She agreed to tell her story here on VDO, and we were so happy to allow her a platform to do so! As you all probably know, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev were in London at a casting signing at HMV yesterday, well there were some that showed up to get a wristband for the signing, and didn't. Tiff was one of the "unfortunates" so to speak, but didn't give up trying, check out her story below!
The rest after the jump!
Okay, so it all started super early the morning of 3rd June when we went looking for the place where the HMV signing was going to take place. Not being from London, we got a taxi to take us to the shop… but didn't know that there were 2 HMV's on the same street. Unfortunately for us, we went to the wrong one, so by the time we arrived at the right one there was an extremely large queue. One of the guards told us to join it anyway as they would probably be giving out extra bands… uh-huh, sure. Around an hour later they counted out the first 320 people (even though the advertisement said 350) and blocked it off… around 5 people in front of us. At that point I was really, really heartbroken. I had travelled a good few hours to get there and spent a hell of a lot of money on hotels to meet them and it wasn't going to happen.
But, thanks to one of my amazing friends who somehow knows everything about celebrities, I found out where they were staying. I travelled down to the hotel for about 11 where around 10 fans were already waiting. Not too long after that, Paul appeared at the window and mouthed to us that he would come down to us soon, quickly followed by Ian who opened up the window and spoke to us, saying thanks and what not (not to mention he blew us a kiss!). Nina opened the window shortly after to talk to us all and said that she'd be down when she could, and Paul and Ian joined her for a little while before they had to go back in for interviews and what not.
For the next few hours we waited for them to finish everything, the fans were building up and there was now around 50 people waiting for them to leave. Ian pretty much took us by surprise when he came down around 5 and said that he wasn't going to be taking photos as they had to go on television… or so people said. Nobody could really hear him over the screaming, so we weren't sure. But I was still beginning to doubt even getting near them at this point, never mind getting a photo or anything…
This didn't seem to put anyone off though, as more and more people turned up. At around quarter past 6 when the cars arrived to take them to the signing, everyone dived to the front and it was pack jammed, but luckily I was right at the front. The cars were packed up with everything they needed which took around 10 minutes, and Ian nipped out again to say he'd be back in 2 minutes and they could only sign one thing for each person.
After around another 10 minutes, Ian and Nina finally made their way out. Ian got attacked by fans straight away and he shouted calmly for them to move back because everyone would get something. He was around the opposite side of the car to me at this point but he eventually came around and I managed to squeeze in next to him. By this point I was nearly hyperventilating… I was stood next to perhaps the most beautiful man ever (Nina got lost in the crowd and the security pushed past me, squashing me up against Ian. I've never been so happy to be squashed in my life). It took a few tries of asking because it was crazy, but I finally asked him for a photo and he said 'sure, photos are hard though guys', but he took my camera anyway and took one for us… which came out way better than I had thought. He looks so good on it, which is all that matters really!
I stayed around Ian for a little while longer as I couldn't see Nina anywhere, so I decided to ask him to sign my shirt. He said 'I'd be delighted to', took my pen and signed it, then he went 'Haha sorry, it's kinda on your boob!' Umm, yeah, the highlight of my life right there. Ian Somerhalder talking about my boob.
I stayed around him for a while and watched as he joked with some of the other fans. He really was such a nice guy, laughing and chatting with everyone around him. Although I was reluctant to leave Ian and all his beauty, I eventually pushed through the massive crowd and finally saw that Paul was now out of the hotel and had a slightly smaller crowd around him than Ian did. I still couldn't see Nina anywhere so I went up to him and again after a few tries, asked him for a photo. My niece was taking it at first and because there were so many cameras around us, he didn't know where to look so the first picture didn't come out so good. I said thank you, but he said 'Which was I supposed to be looking at? Do you want me to take it?' and he took the camera and took one for me himself. I was seriously grateful that he took the time to do another photo with me, despite everyone else around him. I was going to ask him to sign my t-shirt as well at this point, but he got pulled away by the guards as they were running late for the signing.
To say at the beginning of the day I never thought I'd be in with a chance of meeting them, I'm so happy with how everything turned out. I'm actually glad that I didn't get a wristband for the signing, as I would never have gotten the chance to get such great photos with them. I also want to put across here what great people they are. I didn't get chance to really speak to Nina but from what I saw of her when she was talking through the window, she was seriously nice… and Ian and Paul are two of the sweetest guys I have ever met. I really hope you guys reading this get to meet them one day, if you haven't already, because you most definitely won't be disappointed.
Anyway, it's still not really hit me, but I think in a few days it finally will and I'll be marking out about the fact that I MET IAN SOMERHALDER AND PAUL WESLEY!!!
Oh wait, I think that just happened, haha.

PlayLeading body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass has confirmed to HollywoodLife.com there is definitely something going on between Nina Dobrev and her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder — but her affections are a little one-sided!
"The chemistry is there, but they are doing a good job trying to hide it," Dr. Glass told us after looking at photos of Nina, 21, and Ian, 31, courtside at the Lakers game May 27 and shopping together in Venice, Calif. May 28. "She's very into him. There's no question about it. She's always looking at him, or leaning toward him. They can hide all they want, but the body doesn't lie. The truth comes out."
If anyone is trying to keep this relationship under wraps, Dr. Glass think it's Ian.
"His hands are in his pocket [while they are shopping], which means he's hiding, and his thumb is down, which means he doesn't want to reveal anything," she said, explaining, "He's tight-lipped — it means he's holding back. He is trying to deny the relationship."
We hope Ian doesn't deny his feelings for too long — the last thing we want is for this relationship to take as long to develop as it did for their onscreen characters, Elena and Damon. They're bloody perfect together!
I'd like to thank my mom for always believing in and my manager and the entire cast and crew, who work tirelessly, and the CW…
Yeah, you're probably not going to hear that at the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, but that hasn't stopped the CW from mounting its first ever Emmy campaign. Earlier this week, Deadline Hollywood Daily posted about the network's OMFG FYC campaign, which consists of an insert in the new issue of Emmy magazine (see above; more pictures after the jump). Although the OMFG slogan is associated with Gossip Girl — they considered the slogan, "Beautiful people deserve Emmys too," according to DHD – the insert also features The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural. All the featured shows are produced by campaign brainchild Warner Bros. TV, which explains the absence of the CBS Television Studios' 90210 and Life Unexpected, the latter of which I think is more worthy than some of the WBTV shows.
But that's only if we're judging Emmy worthiness on a curve because, let's face it, the CW shows don't stand a chance. And let's be honest — some of them, rightfully, doesn't deserve a chance. But the bigger problem is that the CW has inherited its predecessor's cloak of invisibility when it comes to the Emmys. Like the WB, it ceases to exist. Not everything on the WB was brilliant, but the fact that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and Everwood and their performers went unrecognized is a shame. The network did manage to get some nominations and a win (for Felicity's Keri Russell) at the much looser Golden Globe Awards.
While I don't think that most of the CW shows can compare to the glory days of the WB, least of all Emmy-nominated shows like Mad Men, that doesn't mean that there isn't some underrated talent on the network. The name that came up more than any other in the DHD comments is Supernatural's Jensen Ackles and I'm inclined to agree. He's the one person on the network that I think stacks up against the competition.
Also quite good, although not quite on the level of the Emmys yet, is Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester. I remember being impressed with the depth and sadness she brought to what could have been a superficial role all the way back in the pilot. And where there's Blair, there's usually Chuck, but I'm not as big of a fan of Ed Westwick and his whispery approach to the character as some people seem to be.
And this will probably get me some virtual rotten tomatoes, but if there was an award for Best Vampire Show, I'd give it to The Vampire Diaries over True Blood. OK, now I duck for cover. I'd also take Supernatural over Lost any day. The show had an uneven season, but the "Changing Channels" episode was one of the most creative, ambitious and successful episodes I saw this past season (read my review). Smartly, "Channels" was one of the episodes Warner Bros. put up on their Emmy site for consideration. The other was one of Ackles' best episodes, "The End," in which he played two versions of the same character. The other submissions:
(I'm not so sure the music video-like trailers on the insert's DVD will appeal to voters, but fans would probably love them. This "O' Death" trailer is included for Supernatural, but the ones for Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl appear to be new.)
But none of these shows or actors will likely hear their name called when Emmy nominations are announced July 8, except maybe in technical categories. Not only do they have the unfortunate honor of being on a smaller network that's dismissed by Emmy voters, they also have to contend with the fact that there's just a lot of damn good television out there. When the excellent Friday Night Lights still isn't getting recognized, we have bigger fish to fry with Emmy voters. But I guess it's nice of WBTV and the CW to support their own.By Carina MacKenzie
